Unit 5 Sports and sportsmanship-D Listening and speaking
1. Content Overview
This "Listening and speaking" section in Unit 5 of the 2024 Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press textbook for Grade 7 focuses on sports and sportsmanship. It presents students with various listening materials related to different sports events, such as basketball games, running competitions, and tennis matches. Through listening to dialogues, monologues, and short passages, students are expected to understand the descriptions of sports activities, the skills involved, and the spirit of sportsmanship. The speaking part provides opportunities for students to discuss their favorite sports, share their experiences of participating in sports events, and express their views on sportsmanship. By the end of this section, students will have a better understanding of sports vocabulary, improve their listening comprehension skills, and enhance their ability to communicate about sports in English.

教学过程
5.1 Warming-up (5 minutes)
Greet the students as usual. Then, show some pictures of famous sports stars on the PPT, such as LeBron James (basketball), Usain Bolt (running), and Serena Williams (tennis). Ask students to shout out the names of the sports these stars are engaged in as quickly as possible.
T: "Boys and girls, look at the pictures on the screen. Who can tell me the sport each star is playing?"
Encourage students to actively participate and create a lively atmosphere at the beginning of the class.
5.2 Pre-listening (10 minutes)
Vocabulary introduction: Present the key sports vocabulary on the PPT. Explain the meanings and pronunciations of each word. For example, when teaching "sportsmanship", explain that it refers to the behavior and attitudes that show respect, fairness, and good spirit in sports. Use simple examples to help students understand.
T: "Class, look at this word'sportsmanship'. When two teams play a game, they should play fairly, respect the referee's decisions, and not get angry easily if they lose. That's sportsmanship."
Do a vocabulary matching activity. Divide the new words into two columns on the PPT, one with the words and the other with their definitions. Ask students to match them. Check the answers together.
Prediction: Show some pictures related to different sports events, such as a basketball game in progress, a runner crossing the finish line, and a tennis player hitting the ball. Ask students to predict what they might hear in the following listening materials based on the pictures.
T: "Now, look at these pictures. What do you think we will hear in the listening? Maybe something about the rules of the game, or the players' performance?"
5.3 While-listening (15 minutes)
First listening: Play a short dialogue about a basketball game for the first time. Ask students to listen carefully and answer a general question, such as "What sport are they talking about?" or "Who are the speakers?"
T: "Listen carefully. After the dialogue, tell me what sport they are discussing."
Check the answer with the whole class.
Second listening: Play the dialogue again. This time, ask students to listen for specific information, like "How many points did the home team score?" or "What was the problem in the game?" Provide a worksheet with some blanks for students to fill in while listening.
T: "Listen again and fill in the blanks on your worksheet. Pay attention to the details of the game."
After listening, ask students to share their answers. Discuss and correct any misunderstandings.
Third listening: Play a more complex monologue about a running competition. This time, ask students to listen and summarize the main idea of the monologue. Encourage them to take some notes while listening.
T: "Now, we will listen to a monologue about a running competition. Try to summarize the main idea in your own words after listening."
Invite several students to share their summaries. Guide the class to evaluate and improve the summaries.
5.4 Post-listening (10 minutes)
Role-play: Divide students into pairs. Give each pair a situation related to a sports event, such as a coach giving advice to a player before a game, or two players discussing their performance after a match. Students need to create a short dialogue based on the situation, using the vocabulary and sentence patterns they have learned.
T: "Work with your partner. Create a dialogue according to the situation I give you. Use the words and sentences we learned today."
Walk around the classroom to offer help and guidance. After a few minutes, invite some pairs to come to the front of the class and perform their dialogues.
Group discussion: Divide students into groups of four or five. Pose a question about sportsmanship, such as "In your opinion, which is more important in a sports game, winning or showing good sportsmanship?" or "How can we show sportsmanship in a school sports meet?" Ask each group to have a discussion. Each group should choose a representative to report their group's opinions to the whole class.
T: "Now, let's have a group discussion. Share your thoughts with your group members. Then, a representative from each group will report to us."
During the discussion, move around the groups to listen and encourage students to express their true opinions.
5.5 Summary and Homework (5 minutes)
Summary: Summarize the key points of this class with the students, including the new vocabulary, sentence patterns, and the main ideas of the listening materials. Emphasize the importance of sportsmanship.
T: "Today, we learned a lot of new words about sports, like'sportsmanship', 'coach', etc. We also listened to some interesting sports stories and had great discussions. Remember, sportsmanship is very important in any sports event."
Homework: Ask students to write a short passage about their favorite sports event, including what happened in the event and what they learned about sportsmanship from it. They can also find some information about a famous sports event online and share it with the class next time.
T: "For your homework, write a passage about your favorite sports event. And try to find some interesting sports news online to share with us next class."
教学反思
After teaching this "Listening and speaking" class of Unit 5, I have the following reflections. In the warming-up part, showing pictures of famous sports stars effectively attracted students' attention and quickly got them interested in the topic. However, I could have extended the activity by asking students to briefly say why they like these sports stars, which might have better activated their prior knowledge related to sports.
During the pre-listening vocabulary teaching, the matching activity was helpful for students to understand the new words. But in the future, I could add more interactive elements, such as asking students to use the new words to make their own sentences immediately. This would strengthen their memory and application ability.
In the while-listening process, the different levels of listening tasks gradually guided students to improve their listening skills. However, for some students with relatively weak English foundation, they still had difficulties in catching all the specific information. I should provide more support and practice for them, such as playing the materials one more time for them or giving more hints before listening.
The post-listening role-play and group discussion were quite successful in getting students to actively use the language they learned. But some students were still a bit shy and did not fully express their ideas. I need to find more ways to encourage these students, like giving more positive feedback and creating a more relaxed atmosphere.
Overall, this class had both successes and areas for improvement. I will adjust my teaching methods and strategies based on these reflections to better meet the needs of students and improve the teaching effectiveness.
