"I can't live without my mobile phone!"is what I often hear people say as they talk ab
out how mobiles have become an essential part of their lives.
The all so common sight of heads bent, eyes staring at mobile screens and fingers busy
tapping away repeats itself across major cities around the world.Whenever there is a mo
ment to spare while on the train, taxi or waiting in a queue, people busy themselves with th
eir mobile phones.
Some people believe our unhealthy obsession with mobile phones is destroying how we apprecia
te the little things in life or miss the moments that matter. The truth is that technology overall shoul
d be seen as a tool to improve our lives.
Mobile phones have certainly had a great influence on our lives, but I truly believe it's for the b
etter.
It's changed the way we communicate, whether for work or play.We are now less constrained
(by time and geographical location. With my mobile phone,I can dial into conference calls wh
ile stuck in a traffic jam,or reply to urgent e-mails while on the go.I can send a text message or sha
re photos and videos with friends who aren't living in the same country. My phone calendar keeps
my life organized, and even Facebook.Twitter, and instant messaging are now accessible from mobi
le phones!
The mobile revolution isn't just changing the lives of urbanite(城市居民)like myself..Iknow of
a young Bangladeshi woman named Shompa Akhter who is crazy about fashion and design. She dre
amt about starting her own business and she did just that, opening a shop inKushtia featuring her o
wn creations.Dealing with suppliers in different towns was a problem forShompa-purchase orders
had to either be hand delivered or mailed out to suppliers.Shompa also found it tough publicizing
her business to potential customers outside her town. But once she learnt to operate the mobil
e phone, she was addicted. The 25-year-old businesswoman now stays in touch easily with her suppli
ers.Mobile e-mail is a blessing in her life.Who would have thought that mobility could bring about
such enormous change? It shouldn't really be a surprise though.
28.In the first two paragraphs, the author wants to show
A.mobile phones make people communicate less

C.people become addicted to mobile phones in daily life
D.people's health is greatly affected by mobile phones
29.What's the author's attitude towards mobile phones?
A.Supportive.

C.By analyzing cause and effect
D.By giving examples

A.She operates a food store.
B.She is addicted to Internet surfing.
C.Her mobile phone helped her business a lot.
D.Mobile e-mail is still unavailable to her.

What's your opinion on spicy food? Some people cannot handle even the smallest amount of chili peppers i
n their dinner while others can't get enough of them.
Scientists have long been puzzled by why some people love the chili while others loath e it.Plenty of resear
ch has been done on the subject, dating as far back as the 1970s.Previous results showed that a love of chilies is
related to childhood experiences, and that cultural influences affect our taste too.But the latest study has found t
hat a person's love of spicy food may be linked to his or her personality more than anything else,CBC News rep
orted.
"We have always assumed that liking contributes to intake
-we eat what we are fond of and we lik
e what we consume. But no one has actually directly bothered to relate personality to intake of chili peppers,"sai
d Professor John E.Hayes from Pennsylvania State University, who led the study.
But before you look at the study, you should first know that"spicy"is not a taste, unlike sour, sweet, bitter an
d salty taste. It is,in fact,a burning feeling that you feel on the surface of your tongue. This got scientists thinking
that maybe a love of spicy food is brought about by people's longing for thrill, something they usually get from w
atching action movies or riding a roller coaster
In the study,97 subjects, both male and female, were asked to fill out questionnaires about their personality,
for example, whether they are keen on new experiences or tend to avoid risks. They were then given a glass of wat
er with capsaicin, the plant chemical that makes a chili burn, mixed into it.
By comparing the answers to the questionnaire and what participants said they felt about the spicy water, res
earchers found that those who tended to enjoy action movies or take risks were about six times more likely to enj
oy the spicy water.
Interestingly,we used to believe that the reason why some people can stand spicy food is that their tongues h
ave become less sensitive to it.However, this latest study has found otherwise."It's not that it doesn't burn as badl
y,but that you actually learn to like the burning feeling,"Hayes explained.

A.What we eat actually helps develop our personality.
B.Males prefer spicy food than females.
C.Those avoiding risks tend to hate spicy food.
D.It's wrong to treat"spicy"as a feeling.
34.Why do some people like spicy food according to the recent study?
A.Because their tongues have become less sensitive.
B.Because they are lacking in appetite.
C.Because they want to challenge themselves.
D.Because they love the burning feeling.
35.What's the main idea of the passage?
A.What to eat mainly depends on personality.
