A sunflower is a sunflower. A mobile phone is a mobile phone. But can you combine the two to do something for your local environment?
It may well be possible. When you have finished with your mobile phone, you can bury it in the garden or a plant pot and wait for it to flower.
Recently, a biodegradable (生物可降解的) mobile phone was introduced by scientists. It is hoped that the new type of phone will raise consumers’ recycling awareness (意识).
Scientists have developed a new material in the past five years. It looks like any other plastic and can be hard or soft, and is able to change shape. It can also break down into the soil without giving off any poisonous chemicals. British researchers have used the new material to develop a phone cover that contains a sunflower seed. When this new type of cover turns into waste, it forms something that feeds the seed and helps the flower grow.
Engineers have designed a small transparent (透明的) window to hold the seed. They have made sure it only grows when the phone is thrown away.
“We’ve only put sunflower seeds into the covers so far. But we are working with plant experts to find out which flowers would perform best. Maybe we could put roses in next time.” said one scientist.
1.What is the main advantage of the new type of phone?
A.Recyclable. B.Fast-growing. C.Mobile. D.Transparent.
2.Which of the following is NOT true about the new material?
A.It can be hard or soft. B.It looks like any other plastic.
C.It can break down into the soil. D.It gives off poisonous chemicals.
3.There is a ________ in the mobile phone to keep the seed.
A.pot B.window
C.rose D.sunflower
4.Which kind of flowers would perform best in the mobile phone?
A.Roses.
B.Sunflowers.
C.Both roses and sunflowers.
D.It is still unknown to scientists and plant experts.
5.What is the author’s attitude towards the new type of mobile phone?
A.Positive. B.Negative. C.Neutral. D.Critical.
1.A 2.D 3.B 4.D 5.A
根据第三段“It is hoped that the new type of phone will raise consumers’ recycling awareness. (希望这种新型手机能提高消费者的回收意识)”可知,这种新型手机的主要优势是可回收的,故选A。
2.细节理解题。根据第四段“It can also break down into the soil without giving off any poisonous chemicals. (它也能分解到土壤中,且不释放任何有毒化学物质)”可知,关于这种新材料,不正确的是“它释放有毒化学物质”,故选D。
3.细节理解题。根据第五段“Engineers have designed a small transparent window to hold the seed. (工程师们设计了一个小的透明窗口来放置种子)”可知,手机里有一个窗口来保存种子,故选B。
4.细节理解题。根据第六段“But we are working with plant experts to find out which flowers would perform best. (但我们正在与植物专家合作,以找出哪种花表现最好)”可知,科学家和植物专家还不知道哪种花在手机里表现最好,故选D。
5.推理判断题。文章介绍新型可降解手机,字里行间无负面评价,结合对其优势的阐述,可推断作者对这种新型手机的态度是积极的,故选A。

Feng Boyao and Meng Shuqi found that their city library didn’t have enough Braille books for blind people and that many of the Braille books were out of date.
So, they teamed up to help the blind by fixing the problem. Feng and Meng both studied at No.37 Middle School in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province. They spent nearly a year developing a new kind of Braille reading device and their work won the first prize in a national competition aiming to nurture creative thinking by encouraging youths to solve social problems. The invention was also granted (授予) a national patent (专利) . When connected to a computer, their Braille reader can turn words into raised dots Blind people can read by touching the dots, which are magnets (磁铁) . This is the first Braille reader that uses magnets.
“We found that today’s Braille readers are very difficult and expensive,” Feng said. “So, we decided to develop a user-friendly product, especially for young blind children from grades 1 to 3. Moreover, it only costs about 2,000 yuan.”
After making their first device, Feng and Meng visited a school for the blind to get advice and improved it based on the students’ needs, like changing the size of the screen and the amount of space between the dots. “We hope the invention will be popularized (普及) in the future to help those blind people who can’t afford the Braille reader now,” Meng told Taiyuan News.
6.How long did Feng and Meng spend developing the Braille reader?
A.For half a year. B.For about one year.
C.For two years. D.For three years.
7.What does the underlined word “device” in the passage mean in Chinese?

① Feng and Meng were interviewed by Taiyuan News.
② Many of the Braille books in the city library were out of date.
③ Feng and Meng visited a school for the blind to learn about the students’ needs.
④ They teamed up to help the blind by fixing the problem.
A.②④③① B.②①③④ C.②④①③ D.②③①④
9.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Feng and Meng have set up their own business as a team.
B.Feng and Meng solved many social problems together.
C.Feng and Meng are loving and innovative people.
D.Feng and Meng make sure the invention will be popularized in the future.
10.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.A Braille Reader B.A User-friendly Product
C.Caring for the Blind People D.Two Teenagers and Their Invention
