As part of this year’s Diversity Arts Series, students at Dulwich College(德威学院) had an innovative journey into the tradition of Peking Opera. Together with Yuyin Society (豫英剧院), a famous Peking Opera company in China, the school planned three different activities-an online Peking Opera experience; a day tour of Yuyinge (俞音阁), a theatre built in the Qing Dynasty; and a two-day in-person Peking Opera workshop. These activities brought a rich, interdisciplinary (跨学科的) learning experience to the students: music, art, drama, Mandarin and, of course, an awareness of Chinese cultural history.
Yuyin Society recorded a video to immerse (使沉浸于) students in Peking Opera, just in time for their Chinese Culture Day. In addition to classic Peking Opera performances, the video included a special backstage view of what professional actors do behind the scenes, especially how they do their facial make-up and wear costume headpieces. Students learned about how different make-up and costumes would represent and reflect characters’ different personalities and status.
On the day tour of Yuyinge, students were able to touch and feel the history of Peking Opera through the beautiful ancient architecture. In addition, students were able to explore Peking opera through a mix of activities, including a crash course on Peking Opera, a costume dress rehearsal (排练),a lesson on how to do the stage movements, as well as appreciating an actual play. The students walked away with knowledge of the five major roles in Peking Opera and a keen aesthetic (美学的) sense of the art.
Students at Dulwich College come from over 30 different countries and regions, each carrying an unique cultural background. Although most of the students had been exposed to Peking Opera to some extent, few had engaged with the art closely until they joined the two-day hands-on Peking Opera workshop. Teachers from Yuyin Society shared with students the various roles and techniques of Peking Opera and guided them through interactive activities, where our students learned to draw mask paintings, sing famous pieces and practice stage poses.

B. They had hands-on activities like drawing mask paintings and practicing stage poses.
C. They performed in front of a large audience.
D. They traveled to different historical sites.
39. What was the significance of having students from diverse backgrounds participate?
A. It made translation services unnecessary during the workshop.
B. It created marketing opportunities for the opera company.
C. It allowed cultural exchange despite limited prior exposure to Peking Opera.
D. It enabled comparisons between different Asian performance arts.
40. What is the author’s main purpose in writing this text?

Every time I saw my coupled friends share their vacations on social media while I went home to visit my family, I thought, “I’ll be happy when I finally find someone who will go to Iceland with me.” Iceland was a symbol of a lot of things for me. It was also a thing I believed I needed to do with a partner.
Years passing by, I realized this habit of saying “I’ll be happy when…” is far more damaging than it seems on the surface. In our pursuit (追求) of happiness, we end up postponing joy. We put off trips until we have the right partner to go with. But then as we scroll through our social media feed, it feels like everyone else is living life while we’re just siting on the sidelines.
I decided to stop waiting for happiness.
In 2019, I booked a New Year’s trip to Iceland — by myself. What do you think happened when I finally took that trip to Iceland after nearly 10 years of thinking about it? I found joy!
I watched the fireworks explode over Reykjavik with three generations of Icelanders. I ate fish and chips and scribbled (草草地写) in my journal. I booked a trip to Snaefellsnes, which ended with hot chocolate and singing carols (颂) with a crowd of farmers in a hotel. And the highlight of this trip was seeing the Northern Lights, which were more magical than I had imagined.
What I’ve learned about leaning into the present rather than waiting for the future is that something unexpected always happens. Sometimes it’s adventure, and then you’re left with memories you never would’ve had if you’d just waited for happiness to find you. Other times, you find new friends, new opportunities, new inspiration — things that may actually help you get to the happiness you’re seeking faster or help you uncover a new definition of happiness.
Now, when I catch myself saying some version of “I’ll be happy when…” I try to imagine myself in the future, looking back on right now and asking myself: what are you waiting for?

When many of us think of robots, we picture large metal objects in the shape of humans, having difficulty moving around. But robots have come a long way. A team at Harvard University in Massachusetts recently developed a soft-bodied robot. The team based the design of its robot on sea creatures without hard shells or skeletons (骨架).
The robotic device was made with soft materials called elastomers (弹性体). It is about thirteen centimeters long and has four legs that can move separately. The movements are controlled by compressed air and can be operated from a computer.
George Whitesides led the Harvard researchers. The United States Department of Defense paid for the project.
The robot itself took two months to develop. In tests, researchers have guided the robot under a plate of glass less than three centimeters high. The researchers say their invention can move at a speed of about thirteen meters an hour.
A report about the robot was published in November in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Increasingly, soft robots are being developed for difficult jobs like moving through a battlefield or wreckage (残骸) from a natural disaster. The robot can move across uneven surfaces including small rocks and wet dirt.
Earlier this year, scientists from Tufts University in Massachusetts developed another kind of soft robot made of silicone rubber (硅橡胶). This robot is about ten centimeters long and shaped like a caterpillar (毛毛虫). It is able to roll up into a ball shape and move itself forward.
But researchers say there are difficulties in making these robots move. For one, they want to find a way for the robot to transport its own power source. They are also hoping to improve its speed.
46. What can we learn from the passage?
A. The robots made of silicone rubber can move more easily than those made of metal.
B. A caterpillar can change its body like a ball and roll itself forward quickly.
C. The large metal robots in the shape of humans can’t be used to do some difficult jobs.
D. The soft robot developed by the Harvard researchers is useful after the earthquake.
47. The researchers at Harvard University came up with the idea of soft-robots according to ______
A. a science fiction B. the animals under the sea
C. the aliens in the Mars D. the balls in the playground
48. What does the underlined word “uneven” in the sixth paragraph probably mean?
A. Regular. B. Unsmooth. C. Polished. D. Flat.
49. What should the researchers in Tufts University do more in the development of the soft robot?
A. To raise more money for the research.
B. To make the robot move more quickly.
C. To make the robot useful in the emergency.
D. To save the robot’s power and energy.
50. We can infer that the author of the text is ______.
A. objective in his introduction to the soft-bodied robot
B. curious about the future of the soft-bodied robot
C. doubtful about the speed of the soft-bodied robot
D. disappointed at the development of soft-bodied robot

In 1987, a mountain on Mercury (水星) got a name--Li Qingzhao, the name of a Chinese female poet. According to the International Astronomical Union, all new mountains on Mercury must be named after a litterateur (文人) or an artist who was famous for more than fifty years, and dead for more than three years, before the date they are named. Of the total of 310 names, fifteen are named after famous Chinese writers and artists, and Li Qingzhao is one of them, together with Li Bai, Bai Juyi ,Cao Xueqin and Lu Xun.
What did Li Qingzhao do to deserve such an honour? Li is a poet of the Song Dynasty. Compared with other male poets in China, who have left hundreds or even thousands of poems, Li has only eighty-seven, like a drop in a bucket of water However, her talents and artistic creativity as shown in her eighty-seven works have earned her a lasting place in the Chinese literary circle.
Li was born into a scholar-official family in 1084. Like other young women in a rich family, she was well-read and trained in Chinese calligraphy (书法) and musical instrument. Most young women of rich families were taught to follow the "Three Obediences and Four Virtues" at that time, while Li was free in both character building and artistic development.
When it was time for her to start another stage in life--marriage, Li married Zhao Mingcheng. a student at the supreme academy of the imperial court. The couple devoted their spare time to their common interests --literature and the collection of calligraphy and painting.
Unluckily, their happiness didn't last long. The power struggle at the very top of the government destroyed everything. Li first followed her husband to Qing Zhou, and spent the next ten years there. It turned out that the ten years in Qing Zhou was the most productive period for her artistic creativity. Then in 1127, when the North Song Dynasty ended, Li followed her husband to Lin'an. Soon her husband died. And the worst part was that not only did she lose her loved husband but she also lost most of her accumulated (积累的) works.
Later, Li remarried a government official, who turned out to be a total liar and treated her badly. She died in 1155 in loneliness and pain.
51. With the strict rules set by The International Astronomical Union in naming mountains on Mercury,_____________.
A. Li Qingzhao is the only female poet
B. 310 of them are named after famous Chinese figures
C. 15 of them are named after well-known Chinese writers and artists
D. none but Li Qingzhao, Li Bai, Bai Juyi, Cao Xueqin and Lu Xun are chosen
52. Why did Li Qingzhao deserve such an honour?
A. Because she wrote eighty-seven poems.
B. Because she was like a drop in a bucket of water.
C. Because she was a famous female poet in the Song Dynasty.
D. Because she had great talents and artistic creativity shown in her poems.
53. What can we learn about Li Qingzhao's young adulthood from the passage?
A. She grew up in a quite relaxed family.
B. She was free to do whatever she wanted to.
C. She was forced to follow the "Three Obediences and Four Virtues".
D. She showed little interest in Chinese calligraphy and musical instrument.
54. Which of the following factors may help Li Qingzhao become an outstanding litterateur?
A. Praise from an international union. B. The family background as a child.
C. Change of the dynasties. D. Her second marriage.
55. How does the author tell the story of Li Qingzhao ?
A. In time order. B. By listing facts.
C. In space order. D. By giving examples.
【答案】51. C 52. D 53. A 54. B 55. A

【51题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段Of the total of 310 names, fifteen are named after famous Chinese writers and artists, and Li Qingzhao is one of them, together with Li Bai, Bai Juyi, Cao Xueqin and Lu Xun.可知根据国际天文学联合会制定的为水星上的山脉命名的严格规则,有15座山以中国著名作家和艺术家命名,如李清照,李白,白居易,曹雪芹,鲁迅等。故选C。
【52题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段内容her talents and artistic creativity as shown in her eighty-seven works have earned her a lasting place in the Chinese literary circle.可知虽然李清照流传下来是作品并不多,但她的八十七部作品所表现出的才华和艺术创造力为她在中国文坛赢得了持久的地位。这就是以她的名字命名山脉的原因,故选D。
【53题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段she was well-read and trained in Chinese calligraphy (书法) and musical instrument.和最后一句while Li was free in both character building and artistic development.
本题考查使李清照成为一名杰出文学家的因素,根据倒数第二段when the North Song Dynasty ended, Li followed her husband to Lin'an. Soon her husband died. And the worst part was that not only did she lose her loved husband but she also lost most of her accumulated (积累的) works.可知朝代更迭使她颠沛流离,失去了丈夫和多数的艺术收藏。故排除C项。根据最后一段Later, Li remarried a government official, who turned out to be a total liar and treated her badly.
I returned to Abuja, the capital of Nigeria, after college graduation. I had been there before my mother became a minister.
Two weeks later, I told my mother I was bored. She said, “Here’re the car keys. Go and buy some fruit.” Delighted, I jumped into the car and speeded off.
Seeing me or rather my car, a boy quickly ran up to me, eager to sell his bananas and nuts. “Banana 300 naira. Nuts 200 naira!” I bargained him down to 200 total for the fruit and nuts. When he agreed, I handed him a 500 naira note. He didn’t have change, so I told him not to worry. He said thanks and smiled a row of perfect teeth.
When, two weeks later, I ran into this same boy, I was more aware of my position in Nigerian society where it wasn’t that uncommon to see a little boy who should have been in school selling fruit in the burning sun. My parents had raised me to be aware of the advantage we had been afforded and the responsibility it brought to us.
“What’s up?”I asked him. “I…I don’t have money to buy books.” I took out two 500 naira notes. He looked around nervously before taking the money. One thousand naira means a lot to a family that makes only 50,000 each year.
The next morning, an officer told me, “In this place, when you give a little, people think you’re a fountain of chance.” Possibly it’s right, but this happens everywhere in the world. I wondered if my little friend had actually used the money for books.
After six months’ work in northern Nigeria, I returned and saw him again standing on the road.
“Are you in school now?” I asked.
He nodded.
A silence fell as we looked at each other, and then I realized what he wanted. I held out a 500 naira note. “Take this.” He shook his head fiercely and stepped back as if hurt. “What’s wrong? I asked. “It’s a gift.”
Shaking his head again, he handed me a basket of bananas and nuts before he said, “I’ve been waiting to give these to you.”

第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
36. What was the main purpose of Dulwich College’s collaboration with Yuyin Society?
A. To organize a Peking Opera competition
B. To provide students with an interdisciplinary learning experience
C. To prepare students for a professional Peking Opera performance

A. To encourage readers to appreciate Peking Opera.
B. To introduce the traditional art form of Peking Opera.
C. To report an event that helped students explore the Peking Opera.

41. What was the author like at first?
A. She hated to travel by herself.
B. She desired to have an ideal partner.
C. She valued her family above her friends.
D. She disliked sharing her vacations online.
42. What does the underlined word “postponing” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Creating. B. Destroying. C. Waiting. D. Putting off.
43. What did the author think was most impressive during her trip to Iceland?
A Seeing the Northern lights. B. Trying various kinds of local cuisine.
C. Celebrating New Year with Icelanders D. Spending lime in a hotel in Snaefellsnes.
44. What did the author learn from her Iceland trip?
A. A joy that’s shared is a joy made double.
B. Happiness doesn’t depend on what happens.
C. Don’t wait for happiness to come; just live life in the present.
D. Don’t rely on others for your happiness; create it on your own.
45. How does the author now handle thoughts of “I’ll be happy when…”?
A. They immediately book another international trip.
B They imagine their future self regretting present inaction.
C. They post on social media to seek travel companions.
D. They lower their expectations to avoid disappointment.
54 Which of the following factors may help Li Qingzhao become an outstanding litterateur?
A. Praise from an international union. B. The family background as a child.
C. Change of the dynasties. D. Her second marriage.
55 How does the author tell the story of Li Qingzhao ?
A. In time order. B. By listing facts.
C. In space order. D. By giving examples.
第四部分:阅读表达(每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
56. What happened when the author met the boy for the first time? (No more than 15 words)

57. What do the underlined words “ran into” in Paragraph 4 mean? (No more than 5 words)
