It was not until photographer Rita Nannini left New York that she grew fascinated by the city’s subways. While living in Manhattan for some 15 years in the 1980s and early 1990s, Nannini only commuted (通勤) on the one train-given the subway system’s bad reputation. But after relocating to New Jersey for several years where subway is not an option, Nannini found that absence did make the heart grow fonder — maybe even for pizza rats. During her visit back to New York, Nannini nodded, noticing improvements in the subway’s facilities.
While Nannini was waiting for a train, a bench on the platform opposite caught her attention due to the ever changing faces and characters. They were people of different accents, colors and beliefs. They were from all walks of life, a diverse mix of New Yorkers all there for their own different reasons. Having learned the teenagers’ popular “End of the Line” challenge — boarding trains at random and riding them until their final destination; Nannini decided to visit every first and last stop across the NY subway’s lines with her beloved camera.
Nannini’s “End of the Line” experience saw her traveling some 665 miles across 26 routes in New York city. She took over 8,000 photos of the final stations, as well as the communities they served. In many cases, she rode the routes two or three times over to ensure she got “the shot”. “The project really shows me how important the subway is, and how sustainable it makes our lives,” she said
“It’s often said that my photos show the end of the lines — the last stops,” she said. “But the end of the line is indeed the start for so many people. That made me think about who the people and the communities that live at the two ends are and what it is that the subway means to them.”
Nannini was proud of her set of images directly challenging the traditions of story telling, which echoed both the boredom and excitement of travel on tracks.
Nannini enjoyed taking her time, starting her challenge in 2013 and only shooting the final photos last year. Her first monograph on the terminal stops of the NY subway was released in April 2023.
“When you drive in the suburbs, you don’t have those encounters,” she continued. “People enter your life on the subway. That’s what strikes me most on my journey on tracks.”
24. How did Nannini find the New York subway during her revisit?
A. It tumed out fine.
B. It was depressing.
C. It still held the same bad reputation.
D. It would be her only commuting option.
25. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The diversity of New Yorkers’ daily life.
B. The inspiration for Nannini’s subway shots.
C. The popularity of “End of the Line” challenge.
D. The challenges of Nannini’s job as a photographer.
26. What can we infer from Nannini’s “End of the Line” experience?
A. Her way of telling stories is traditional.
B. She expressed sympathy for the subway riders.
C. Her photography is highly expected by the encounters.
D. She found life on tracks was more interesting than life on wheels.
27. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. “End of the Line” Challenge: A New Trend in NY Subways
B. The Road Home: Rita Nannini’s Record of her Subway Ride
C. Last Stop to New Start: A Photographer’s Rediscovery of NY Subways
D. New Yorkers’ Routine: A Surprising Mixture of Boredom andExcitement

Danone Portugal introduced a new yogurt named Juntos. For every pack of yogurt that a person bought, he would donate yogurt to a family in need. Danone had done its research. Increasingly, people say they want to buy from brands that give them a sense of purpose. Surely a yogurt that helped the needy would be appealing. But Juntos was a failure. Despite sinking millions into a marketing campaign, Danone pulled Juntos from the market only months after it was launched. Now the same product is simply marketed as a tasty yogurt.
What happened? To find the reason behind Juntos’ failure, Lawrence Williams and his colleagues did an experiment where they showed people some products and asked these people to pick one option. They reminded some to focus on the “purposeful and valuable” aspect while others were told to “enjoy themselves” and focus on “delight and pleasure.” They found that participants who prioritized meaning preferred the less expensive product when compared with people who put pleasure in the first place.
So why were meaning-seekers cheaping out? Lawrence Williams asked participants to explain their decision-making to find out. He learned that meaning-oriented people were not thinking about how the product they might buy could bring meaning to their lives. Instead, they were occupied with what else they could do with their money.
I am all for people making wise and strategic financial choices. But cheap products can create many problems. Inexpensive options often do not last as long as the higher-end ones. As a result, we shop more often, which is ultimately worse for our wallets. Plus, that spending pattern can do a greater damage to the environment. Thanks in part to fast fashion, people buy 60 percent more clothing today than they did 15 years ago. The fashion industry alone emits more greenhouse gases than international flights and maritime (海洋的) shipping combined.
So before you dive into your wallet for some deals, try not to fix only on what you are spending or saving. Think carefully about what you are buying, too.
28. What is the main reason for the failure of Juntos?
A. It ignored marketing strategies. B. It priced itself relatively high.
C. It lacked a particularly good taste. D. It focused on delight and pleasure.
29. What can be inferred about meaning seekers?
A. They frequent high-end stores. B. They think products extend their lives.
C. They hesitate to make decisions. D. They make more purchases with money.
30. How is Paragraph 4 mainly developed?
A. By giving some examples. B. By listing numbers and data.
C. By explaining reasons. D. By making some comparisons.
31. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Innovation: a Product’s Life B. To Buy or not to Buy
C. Meaning seekers or Quality-pursuers D. Fast Fashion: a Hit to Your Wallet
D
The conventional wisdom about insects has been that they are unthinking, unfeeling creatures whose behavior is entirely hardwired (天生的). But in the 1990s researchers began making surprising discoveries about insect minds. Some species of wasps (黄蜂) recognize their nest mates’ faces and acquire impressive social skills. For example, they can infer the fighting strengths of other wasps relative to their own just by watching other wasps fight among themselves.
Given the substantial work on the complexity of insect cognition (认知), it might seem surprising that it took scientists so long to ask whether, if they are that smart, could also be sentient, capable of feeling. Since we have no direct window into the inner world of an animal that cannot verbally communicate its thoughts and feelings, the question of whether insects are sentient remained academic.
15 years ago, I performed an experiment in which we asked whether bumblebees could learn about t hreat from their natural enemies. We built a plastic spider model with a mechanism that would briefly trap a bumblebee between two sponges before releasing it. The bumblebees showed a significant change in their behavior after being attacked by the robotic spider. Perhaps unsurprisingly, they learned to avoid flowers with spiders and meticulously scanned every flower before landing. Curiously, however, they some times even fled from imaginary threats, scanning and then abandoning a perfectly safe, spider-free flower. Although this incidental observation did not constitute formal ev idence of an emotionlike state, it did open the door to the idea that such states might exist in insects.
Some research suggested that insects might have positive states of mind. Researchers discovered that bees actively seek out drugs such as nicotin e and caffein e when given the choice and even treat themselves with nicotin e when sick. Male fruit flies stressed by being robbed of mating opportunities prefer food containing alcohol, and bees even show withdrawal symptoms when removed from an alcohol-rich diet.
Why would insects consume mind-altering substances if there isn't a mind to alter? But these suggestive hints of negative and positive mind states still fell short of what was needed to demonstrate that insects are sentient.
32. What does the example of the wasps indicate?
A. Insects show signs of intelligence.
B. Insects can do complex calculations.
C. Insects can socialize in a skillful way.
D. Insects live in highly complex societies.
33. What does the underlined word “meticulously” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Hesitantly. B. Casually. C. Eagerly. D. Carefully.
34. What was unexpected about the bumblebees’ behavior in the experiment?
A. They avoided flowers with spiders.
B. They settled on flowers despite threats.
C. They might abandon spider-free flowers.
D. They might get scared away by other insects.
35. What does the text mainly discuss?
A. What insects' various behavior can reveal.
B. How insects communicate their thoughts.
C. What amazing powers insects possess.
D. Whether insects are capable of feeling.

When raindrops fall to the ground in summer, a familiar scent always follows. Many people call this the “smell of rain”. However, rain is made up of odorless (无味的) water. So, where does this smell come from?
___36___ But it actually comes from wet soil. This special odor even has its own name: petrichor (潮土油), which comes from a pair of chemical reactions.
The pleasant smell has long been an interest of scientists since Australian scientists first documented the formation of petrichor in 1964. According to scientists, some plants produce oils during dry periods. ___37___
Yet, it’s the second reaction that creates the most petrichor. It occurs when chemicals produced by bacteria in soil are released. ___38___ These bacteria break down and change into simple chemical compounds, providing nutrition for plants. Meanwhile the process also produces geosmin (土臭素), a compound with a distinct earthy aroma (香味).
Lots of animals are sensitive to geosmin but human beings are extremely sensitive to it. When it rains after a long period of dryness, drops of water hit the ground. Geosmin is then released from the surfaces. ___39___ And it finally gives raindrops their familiar scent. If it rains heavily enough, geosmin will be spread downwind, warning others of coming rain.
___40___ And the next time someone mentions how much they love the smell of rain, you can prove your intelligence by explaining where that smell comes from.
A. And when it rains, these oils are released into the air.
B. The smell of petrichor is quite pleasant to the human nose.
C. There are a group of microorganisms widely found in soils.
D. Rain can refresh the soil specially when it rains heavily.
E. Scientists found the distinctive smell doesn’t come from rain.
F. The pleasant smell always comes into being with the flow of air.
G. It is further spread around its surroundings with the aid of wind and rain.

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Alma, shy and quiet, started ninth grade in a high school in the center of the town. Never had she imagined loneliness would wrap around her like a shadow. Soon she found herself dreaming of her old eight-grade class, which had been small, but warm and familiar. For her, this new school was much too cold, unfriendly, and indifferent.
Each morning, Alma’s stomach twisted as she pushed through the heavy school doors. Students brushed past her without a glance as if she were invisible. No one at this school seemed to care whether she belonged or not. Though she was caring and kind-hearted, her shy voice was always caught in her throat and her eyes were downcast when she tried to say something, which particularly became a barrier to friendship.
The few classmates did notice her existence only when they needed something — a pencil to borrow, or favors that never returned. Tammy, her “so-called” closest friend, who was busy with her speech competition, smiled only when she needed answers for a test or help with her homework. Day after day, she moved through the halls like a ghost, unheard and unseen. Slowly, she began to believe her thoughts weren’t good enough to be heard. So she continued to stay quiet and almost mute. This pushed Alma closer to the edge.
Her parents grew increasingly worried about her, for they feared she would never make friends. Her parents tried everything they could to help her fit in. However, it still didn’t work. Night after night, she cried herself to sleep and was convinced that no one would ever truly care for her and love her enough to be her real friend.
As that semester was coming to an end, Alma decided to take one last chance. With trembling hands, she signed up for the Speech Club, though she expected nothing.

【66题答案】
【答案】参考范文1:
Dear Mr. Smith.
I’m Li Hua, and I’m writing to express my sincere gratitude for your incredibly inspiring lecture last week. Your insights into language learning were truly enlightening.
However, I’m facing some challenges putting your advice into practice. While I’ve tried using word roots to expand my vocabulary, I still struggle to recall them accurately when writing essays. Often, I find myself stuck with simple words and sentence structures, which makes my writing seem immature. I wonder if you could share some specific techniques to actively use new vocabulary in writing effectively.
Thank you for your time and guidance.
Yours.
Li Hua
参考范文2:
Dear Mr. Smith.
I am Li Hua, one of the students who attended your wonderful lecture on effective learning strategies. Thank you so much for sharing such valuable and motivating ideas.
Inspired by your talk, I’ve been trying to engage more with English media. Yet, I find that native speakers speak too quickly in movies or podcasts for me to catch the key points, which also discourages me from speaking up in class. I’m concerned about making mistakes and sounding awkward. Could you possibly offer some advice on how to improve my listening skills and build confidence in speaking?
I would greatly appreciate any suggestions you might have.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
【67题答案】
【答案】One possible version:
One afternoon, a card on her desk caught her eyes. With curiosity, she opened it, surprisingly finding that it was the card from Tammy, which noted, “Hi, Alma! I’m terribly sorry for not caring about you due to my speech competition preparation. I’m happy to know that you signed up for the Speech Club. Let’s embark on a journey of speech exploration together! Your forever friend!” These words pierced straight into her soul. For the first time, she realized someone actually cared for her. Holding the handmade card with a blooming sunflower painted on the front, Alma felt deeply moved, excited and happy tears welling up.
From that day on, Alma’s world began to change. She began to feel hopeful about her new school life. In the Speech Club, Tammy helped her a lot, they devoted themselves to improving their speech skills. Alma volunteered to help the classmates in need, never asking for anything in return, her caring as well as kind-hearted qualities won her many friends. Most importantly, the “cold, unfriendly, and indifferent” school faded into memory. Instead, she discovered a warm and familiar school—one where she was truly seen and heard.
