Most private gardens are found in the south, especially in cities south of the Yangtze River. They are mostly built at one side or at the back of the houses. There is a large space in the garden with small hills, well-placed rocks, trees and flowers. Around the scene are small open areas with beautifully shaped corridors (走廊) or walls so that the whole scene can be enjoyed. Suzhou shows the most and the best Chinese private gardens.
Landscape gardens are different and are places for the public. There are a number of pleasant natural scenes in landscape gardens. The ancient Chinese named the garden after the beautiful scenes, like the ten West Lake scenes in Hangzhou. Surrounded (围绕) by trees and filled with ponds (池塘) and pools of water, the Chinese village of Ding Wuling should be covered with mosquitoes (蚊子), especially during the summer time. However, it is reported that mosquitoes haven’t been seen here for almost a century.
The village with a long history is in the mountains of China’s Fujian Province. There are many special stone houses. But in recent years, the culture and buildings of this village have been overshadowed (使失色) by a mystery — the absence (缺乏) of mosquitoes.
It’s unclear whether scientists ever made a survey to get to know this mystery. But most of the people in Ding Wuling believe it has something to do with the toad-shaped (蟾蜍形状的) stone. They believe that the “god toad” prevents the mosquitoes from entering the village.
Another popular explanation (解释) has to do with the local villagers’ habit of collecting rubbish and burying (埋) it on the hillside near the village. When Chinese newspaper People’s Daily first reported the mystery of this mosquito-free village, the local villagers hoped that experts (专家) could soon offer a certain answer to the mystery and put Ding Wuling on the tourist map.
Unluckily, I haven’t been able to find newer information about Ding Wuling and its mosquito mystery, so it’s possible that the whole thing was made up to help develop tourism in the area. Then again, there might be something special about that toad-shaped stone. Who knows?

According to market data (市场数据), the sale of energy drinks increased by 73% between 2018 and 2023. And it’s not just adults buying them. Research done in 2024 by a market research company, called Gitnux, found that about a third of children aged 12 to 17 drink energy drinks often.

When you were at school, the last thing you probably wanted to do was spend your weekends going to work. There was homework to do, sports to play and fun to have.
Today in the UK you are allowed to work from the age of 13, and many children do take up part-time jobs. It’s one of those things that is seen almost as a rite of passage (成人仪式). It’s a taste of independence.
Teenagers agree that it teaches useful lessons about working with adults and also about using your money wisely. Many young people actually want to work because it gives them a sense of freedom. One 13 year-old girl called Rachel, who has a Saturday job in a shop, said she enjoyed her job because she was making money and it helped her dare to speak to other people.
Research has shown that not taking on a Saturday or holiday job could be bad for a person later on. But the number of school children in the UK with a part-time job has fallen by a fifth in the past five years. Many young people feel going out to work will influence their performance at school, and they are under more pressure now to study hard and get good exam results—and a good job in the long term. But researchers at the University of Cambridge, the UK, collected data (资料) from more than 250,000 people over the past 10 years. They noticed that as people age, their social circumstances (环境) change, and so does their music taste. There are three musical periods that people pass through as they grow. The first period comes in the teenage years, during which time people like rock because people regard themselves as independent individuals (个体).
But as people move into early adulthood, their lifestyle changes—they get to know more people and want to build close relationships with others. As a result, they prefer pop which is often played at parties.
When middle age comes, people like to listen to jazz and classical. They also like country and folk, “During this period of life, many people often feel tired because of their work and family, and there is a requirement for relaxing and emotive (动情的) music.” said Jason Smith, a research member.
You must be thinking: “Aren’t there old people who still love rock music?” Of course there are. The first Chinese film, made in 1905, was recording of the Beijing Opera The battle of Dingjunshan. Tan Xinpei, who was a master of Beijing Opera, played the leading role in the film. In the early 20th century, Beijing Opera was highly valued, and many world-famous stars appeared.
Besides Beijing Opera, I also like Italian (意大利的) operas that can make me feel relaxed. There are around 800 opera houses in Italy. Even if you are not an opera-lover, you may hear about some famous Italian composers (作曲家), such as Vivaldi and Puccini.
China and Italy are far away from each other, but their opera traditions are interconnected more or less. Italian composer Giacomo Puccini’s last opera Turandot is set in ancient China and follows Prince Calaf, who falls in love with Princess Turandot. Four years ago, a Beijing Opera version (版本) of Turandot was performed in Italy’s capital city and other cities, and it won high praise from Italian people.

How music takes us back to our past?
It’s happened to all of us: a song comes on the radio, and we may immediately think about a time in our past. But what is it that makes music so effective at doing this? There are a few things that link tunes (曲调) with our memories.
Paul Donoghue, writing for ABC News, reminds us that the emotional nature of music helps make it memorable. And Kelly Jakubowski, an assistant professor, adds that music and singing are often part of many important life events, they can also easily draw our attention. Then the music and these life events are likely to be encoded together in our memories. Music itself is easy to remember. Oral cultures (口述文明) have passed important knowledge from generation to generation through songs. The rhythm (节奏), melody (旋律) and alliteration in lyrics all serve as memory aids. Pop music especially can be about a special moment in time.
As Shahram Heshmat, writing in Psychology Today highlights, we often become familiar with a piece of music because we hear it as background music. Familianty is important. The more familiar a piece of music is, the more effective it is at bringing back memories because we like listening to a song over and over again better than watching a film or a TV program in the same time.
Heshmat points out that our musical preferences usually form during our teens, and this is connected with what many experts call the “reminiscence bump”, where we make our strongest memories between the ages of 10 and 30.

Passage 1
(24-25九年级上·山东济南历下区·期中)
Jody Mikhail goes to Cumberland Valley High School in Pennsylvania. She is a senior. A few years ago, a sign for a new girls” wrestling (摔跤) club caught her eye. Jody decided to try it. “I fell in love with it the first time,” she said. Unlike before, she’s hardly alone. Girls’ wrestling has become the fastest-growing high school sport in the US.
In 1990, there were just over 100 high school girl wrestlers in the whole country. Before 2018, just six states had approved (认可) it. Now the sport has been officially approved in more than 40 states. In the United States, there are four times as many girls’ wrestling teams today as there were 10 years ago. There are now over 50,000 high school girl wrestlers. That’s five times as many as 10 years ago. This was the biggest increase for the sport these years.
Hundreds of girls wrestled in Pennsylvania’s first official state tournament (锦标赛), including Mikhail. In the past, girls often had no choice but to wrestle boys. There were very few girls wrestling in tournaments. “There were never tournaments like this,” said Savannah Witt, a state champion wrestler who has wrestled for 10 years. “It’s amazing. I’ve been used to running into the same three faces at tournaments. Now although I don’t know half these girls, it’s exciting to wrestling them.”
Wrestling is something of a niche sport, meaning that it’s popular among a small part of the population. But we are finding out now that the world is changing. Some see the rise of girls’ wrestling as part of a larger change in women’s sports. Although wrestling is still more popular among boys than girls, there may be as many girls as boys taking part in the sport one day.

Passage 1
(24-25九年级上·山东淄博临淄区·期中)
A dragon-shaped bronze statue (青铜像) with a “tiger” head and tiger brain was discovered at the Sanxingdui Ruins (遗址) Site in Guanghan, Sichuan Province. This kind of object has never been found in other sites of the Bronze Age in China.
The shape of this dragon is a bit special as its head is like a tiger’s head, and its ears are round like those of a tiger. But it has two long horns (犄角) on its head. Its mouth is also special with something like a knife in it. And its body is like a flying dragon.
According to reports, this statue is about 80 cm high, but it’s still not a complete bronze. Experts have found that this statue has no supports in front of it, and its main body exceeds (超出) the base. So it probably needs to lean (倚靠) on other objects to keep its balance (平衡).
So where is the missing part? After searching, experts made another great discovery about half a meter away: the top-shaped snake-like figure (雕像). The 1.5-meter-high body is supported on a square base with both hands, and turns upward. It also needs to lean on other object to keep balance.
Now some experts guess that the two statues are probably the same set of objects. If the guess proves to be true, this will become another huge Sanxingdui Ruins Site since the late 1920s. It all began in 1929 when a farmer was digging a hole there and it opened the door to an unknown culture of 3,000 to 5,000 years old.
1.What can we know about the bronze statue?
A.Its shape is like a tiger.
B.There are two long horns on its mouth.
C.It has been found in another sites of the Bronze Age in China.
D.It was found at the Sanxingdui Ruins Site in Guanghan, Sichuan Province.
2.Why does the statue need to lean on other objects according to the experts?
A.Because its main body is too long.
B.Because it has to keep its balance.
C.Because it has supports behind it.
D.Because it is an independent bronze.
3.What can we infer from the experts’ guess?
A.The missing part of the dragon-shaped is probably the snake-like figure.
B.The snake-like figure is the first bronze that has been found at Sanxingdui Ruins Site.
C.The snake-like figure is quite different from the tiger-shaped figure.
D.More than 50,000 ancient objects have been found at the Sanxingdui Ruins Site.
4.What is the main idea of this passage?
A.The guess of some experts about the bronze statue.
B.The missing part of a dragon-shaped bronze statue.
C.The discovery of a dragon-shaped bronze statue.
D.The discovery of Chinese unknown culture.

Passage 1
(23-24九年级上·山东济宁邹城·期中)
The swan is a large, beautiful bird with a long neck, big white wings and wide feet. It is a great flyer because of its strong wings. It is also a good swimmer, swimming quickly and nicely through the water. But on dry land, it’s a different story—the swan’s heavy body and slow walk make it look a bit funny!
Swans live anywhere there is fresh water, like lakes and slow-moving rivers. They eat water plants and small fish. Swans are very territorial (地盘性的), which means that they protect their homes against any strangers. When swans want to look strong, they stand up tall, show their long necks and open their big wings while letting out big noises.
In spring, swans make a nest (巢) of tree leaves near the water. They often use the same nest year after year, repairing it when egg laying time comes round. The mother swan lays between five and eight eggs in the nest, and then sits on them to keep them warm and safe until about a month later, cygnets are born. Sometimes the father swan will take the first-born cygnets out onto the water while the mother stays to look after the other eggs. The cygnets are looked after by both parents, who will fight other animals, people or even boats if they think their cygnets are in danger!

A.swim quickly B.stand on one leg

Surrounded (围绕) by trees and filled with ponds (池塘) and pools of water, the Chinese village of Ding Wuling should be covered with mosquitoes (蚊子), especially during the summer time. However, it is reported that mosquitoes haven’t been seen here for almost a century.
The village with a long history is in the mountains of China’s Fujian Province. There are many special stone houses. But in recent years, the culture and buildings of this village have been overshadowed (使失色) by a mystery — the absence (缺乏) of mosquitoes.

Whether it’s because they taste good or because people just want to feel more alive, energy drinks are becoming more and more popular around the world.
According to market data (市场数据), the sale of energy drinks increased by 73% between 2018 and 2023. And it’s not just adults buying them. Research done in 2024 by a market research company, called Gitnux, found that about a third of children aged 12 to 17 drink energy drinks often.

Passage 2
(24-25九年级上·山东青岛胶州·期中)
However, doing part-time work is a good way of helping young people learn skills that they will need in their working lives. They just need to get the right balance (平衡) between doing part-time work and having enough time to study and rest.

Passage 1
(24-25九年级上·山东烟台龙口·期中)
Do you listen to the songs that your parents like? You probably think the music that they like is old and dull but the songs you like are more popular and interesting.
But Jason Smith explained that their reasons for listening to rock music may have changed. “We use music for different reasons,” he said, and at that age people may listen to remind themselves of their youths.

A.boring B.tiny C.valuable D.safe

Beijing Opera is a performance art dating back to the late 18th century. It usually includes singing, acting, and kungfu. Beijing Opera tells stories of history, society and daily life. By watching it, people can not only have fun, but also gain plenty of knowledge.

Passage 3
(23-24九年级上·山东青岛即墨·期中)
