Unit 6 Craftsmanship
一课一练(28) Reading and Writing

A
Big craftsman, imaginative. Craftsmen depend on the inheritance and research of technology and the dedication and firmness of their work. This also confirms the truth of “conscientiously doing things right, and doing things well by heart”. Thousands of jobs, with no exception whatsoever.
I have been in the factory for six years. The first job after entering the factory is sampling, which is mainly responsible for providing experimental materials for the experimenter. At that time, I felt that I was engaged in a monotonous (单调乏味的) job, without much technical content, and I called myself a fabric porter. Later, I became an experimenter, and after I did the experiment, I realized the importance of sampling. Since only representative samples are taken, the test results will be more valuable.
In the past six years, every job adjustment has been a challenge for me. A new start means a new journey. But no matter how the position changes, we must keep a consistent attitude towards work. No matter what work you face, you need to sink your heart and do it on a solid basis. As the saying goes, "If you want to float, you must go down first." On my side there are many employees who do the job more than 20 years and made every dish and work diligently in an extraordinary position unknown to the public. This spirit is worthy of my learning.
Carrying forward the “craftsmanship” in any era will not become obsolete (过时的). We need to treat the work seriously with the spirit of craftsmen and strive to become a craftsman in the new era.

Beiloukou in Yingxian, Shanxi, is one of the 200 important passes (关隘) of the Great Wall. In the past, villagers often took bricks (砖) from the Great Wall to build “houses” for their pigs and sheep. That’s because the bricks are stronger than the modern ones.
It was not until “four old lunatics (疯子)” started protecting the Great Wall in Beiloukou in 2009 that the villagers stopped taking bricks.
The “four old lunatics” are 86-year-old Li Shisheng, 79-year-old Liu Shenglong, 77-year-old Nie Tianfu and 72-year-old Chang Liang. In the past, each of them had a great job such as a reporter and a doctor. In 2009, they volunteered to protect the Great Wall because of their love for culture and history. In a word, they wanted to do something so that the rest of their life could be more meaningful.
At first, people in the village didn’t understand them and saw them as “lunatics” as they protect the Great Wall “for nothing”. But the four used to smile back and just tell the villagers to take good care of the Great Wall, because “it is a very important part of Beiloukou’s culture and history”. As time went by, their hard work paid off. More and more villagers came to learn about the culture and history of the village.
Thanks to the hard work of the “four old lunatics”, the village has become a nationallevel ancient village. Nie says, “We want our children and grandchildren to understand the culture and history of this village and pass it on to future generations (代)。”
