七、阅读理解
When we have long train trips, we often see some passengers reading or writing on the train while enjoying the beautiful views outside. Wouldn’t it be cool if trains could be more like libraries? Well, now, in China, there are trains that do just that!
A “slow train” with its own study room in South-west China has drawn much attention from people around the world, according to a CCTV News report on Monday.
The train No.5609/5610 is a slow train. It runs between Chongqing and Xiushan County. In some carriages(车厢), there are desks and chairs instead of seats near the windows to let people study while travelling. The Chinese slogan “Yu Yue” appears on the train, which means “travelling and reading happily”. Other slogans can be seen in all the transformed(改变的) carriages.
Besides No. 5609/5610, other “slow trains” have become “study carriages” too. For example, No.5619/5620 and 5633/5634 run along the Chengdu-Kunming Railway. Students from nearby schools often take the train between school and home, so the train becomes their “school buses”. Many students often do their homework on the way home on the train.
No. Z150 from Guiyang to Beijing is very popular with college students because it has a “book bar”. There are nearly 400 universities and colleges in the cities along the line. These small changes provide passengers in need with a relaxing place to continue their studies.
( )1. What can we know from Paragraph 2?
A. People can do many things on the train.
B. Having long train trips is exciting.
C. People like reading and writing on the train.
D. Many people are interested in the “slow train” in South-west China.
( )2. Why are the trains that run along the Chengdu-Kunming Railway called “school buses”?
A. Because trains look like school buses.
B. Because students can do homework on the train.
C. Because there are “study carriages” on the train.
D. Because students often take the train between school and home.
( )3. What can passengers do on the train No. Z150?
A. They can study. B. They can make tea.
C. They can buy books. D. They can enjoy free meals.
( )4. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The Study Train B. The Journey on a Train
C. The Most Beautiful Train D. The Most Expensive Train

Days pass by. It seems that daily life will become boring if nothing unexpected happens in our lives. The sense of ceremony from special days keeps our feelings fresh and increases expectations of life.
Mrs Li has two children. Li Xin is her 15-year-old daughter. Li Lei is Li Xin’s brother. He’s two years older than Li Xin.
A new semester should begin with a sense of ceremony. On the first day of new term, Li Xin sat in front of the TV and watched the First Class, an educational program of CCTV. The First Class encouraged her to study hard and be a useful person.
Another exciting thing to bring her the sense of ceremony is the flag-raising ceremony. On Monday morning, students were dressed in school uniforms and stood in neat lines on the playground quietly. While Li Xin was singing along with the national anthem and watching the rising flag, the sense of national pride and love for the country came into her heart.
Li Xin will leave junior high school this year. She expects the moving moment of graduation ceremony. She will never forget the important people in her life who helped and supported her — her parents, her teachers and her friends. She will consider what they’ve done for her and hopes that they will be proud of her in the future.
As for Li Lei, he can’t wait to grow up, as he can make his own decisions. He always asks a question, “At what age do I really become an adult?” In China, the 18th birthday is a very important event for young people because they can vote and learn to drive a car, so Mrs Li regards Li Lei’s birthday as the most important event. She will have a big birthday party for her son. Li Lei gradually realizes no matter how old he is, becoming an adult is really about learning how to be independent and responsible.
Every moment to record a meaningful event brings a sense of ceremony and makes our lives colorful.

Why are so many people afraid to fail? Quite simply because no one tells us how to face the failure. In fact, failure can become experience that means growth. We forget that failure is part of the human condition and that every person has the right to fail.
Most parents work hard to prevent failure or protect their children. One way is to lower standards. Nearly 60% of the parents choose this way: When a child finishes making a table, the mother describes it as “perfect” even though it doesn’t stand still. The other way is to blame (责怪) others. If John fails in science, his teacher is unfair or stupid.
There’s a problem with the two ways. It will make children unprepared for the real life if they don’t meet enough failure. The young need to learn that no one can be best at everything, and no one can win all the time. The young should be allowed to experience failure.
Failure never gives people pleasure. It hurts both gown-ups and children. But it can be really good to your life when you learn to use it.
1. How many ways do most parents choose to prevent failure and protect their children?
2. What will happen if a child doesn’t meet enough failure?

“Are you listening, Simon?” Simon’s teacher asked. It was a pretty usual question.
Simon shook his head, smiling. He hardly listened or tried hard in class. Talking was so much fun. He wanted to be heard rather than listen.
“Listen. And you will learn something.” Mrs. Jacobs tried every day, but Simon never paid attention.
That evening, his throat really hurt. The next morning, when he opened his mouth to say “Good morning”, nothing came out but a croak (低沉沙哑的声音).
Simon’s mother looked at him, “Honey, you’ve lost your voice.”
“Can I stay at home?” He tried to ask, but words didn’t come out. Instead, his mother checked him for a fever and decided it was good for him to go to school, even if he couldn’t talk.
When he got to school, Mrs. Jacobs said “Hello” to him, and he just nodded (点头). When his friends asked him what TV shows he watched last night, he just shrugged (耸肩). By the time the bell rang for class, almost everyone was looking at him as if he’d grown a third eye.
Penny raised her hand, “Mrs. Jacobs, why isn’t Simon talking?”
“He never stops talking,” Richard said worriedly.
Everyone started talking at once. They were excited, worried, and surprised.
Simon sat in class, bored. He watched them talk to each other as if the teacher wasn’t there, but he couldn’t even do that. In math class he could hold up fingers if the answer was less than 10, but that wasn’t fun. He decided to try to pay attention.
He could do his homework that night. It gave him TV and game time with his work all done.
The next day, even though his voice was coming back, he stayed quiet again. The third day, he could talk fine, but he listened and raised his hand to speak.
What a difference that one day made!

One morning, Wu Liang discovered that her classroom had changed. She found that the desks were no longer in rows, but pushed together to make eight bigger desks. She was so excited about it for the first two days that she couldn’t listen to the teachers carefully. But soon she and her classmates got used to this new classroom arrangement. “Now our class is quieter,” said Wu. “What’s more, we can come up with our own ideas and learn more through discussion. It’s a better way to study.”
Li Yu liked it too. “Group members first discuss,” he said. “And then present to the whole class. It makes us believe in ourselves.” This was part of a reform (改革) at Li’s school. The school made this reform because it wanted to offer students easier ways to study and more chances to discuss. “Our school hopes to improve students’ abilities to study by themselves and work in groups,” said Zhang Ming, an English teacher.
However, the reform has demanded more of teachers. Now they have only 15 minutes to give a lesson that would have been taught in 45 minutes before. It is difficult to teach in such a short time. The teachers have to find better ways to teach more effectively (有效地).
“The reform demands more, but I'm sure it is helpful,” added Zhang Ming.

Several months ago, I noticed a new guitar in my friend Kevin’s room. He never showed any interest in music before. When I asked him about it, he said that he dreamt of trying difficult and different things before turning eighteen. 1 To realize this dream, Kevin started practicing hard and spent two hours a day on the guitar. Finally, the show was such a success (成功) and Kevin felt full of joy after it.
After Kevin’s success, I was inspired (启发) to go for my dream of writing. I wasn’t sure how to start, but I remembered what my teacher said about writing skills. 2 Once I had a few ideas, I listed some key words on it. This helped me put my thoughts together and made it easier to start writing. I then wrote the first draft (草稿). There might be many mistakes in it. But I told myself not to give up. 3 They often provided great new ideas. Finally, I sent my article to the school magazine. I felt nervous and excited at the same time. A few days later, I received an email from school saying they decided to choose my article and it would come out soon. I was over the moon!
4 It was a great feeling to know that others would read my article and hopefully be inspired just like Kevin inspired me.
Never give up on your dreams and keep working towards them, just like Kevin did. 5 But remember, nothing is impossible in the world if you set your mind to do it.
A. It may take some practice and patience.
B. Finishing the first draft is a really good start.
C. Seeing my name in the magazine made me feel so happy.
D. So I sat down with a notebook and started to write.
E. And one of these things was to play the guitar in front of others.
F. Then I asked my teacher and friends to read it and give some advice.
G. He thought it was too hard to learn the guitar well in a short time.

You might hear about all the different clubs at your school and want to know where they all came from. How do you start a school club? This simple step-by-step guide will show you how to start a club right from the beginning to the end.
Work out the plan. Choose a time and a place for your club. Decide on a room to hold the club in with your friends. Agree with them on a time, but make it during school hours, and not during lessons or work time. Plan out how the club will run. At many schools, students start planning the club before the summer vacation.
Find responsible (负责的) people. You can’t start a club with only one member. Every club needs people who are responsible, smart and hard-working. A club including people like this will certainly be a good one. Also starting to talk with the responsible friends will help in the planning of the club so that you will not have to do it by yourself.
Ask others to join. The first thing is to draw a poster. On the poster, you can introduce your club with some pictures to make others join it. And you can help others understand why you start the club and different needs of the club. This will help to get people to join.
Stay organized (有条理的). Now that a club has started, it is not over yet. All of the hard parts may have passed, but there is still the maintenance (维护) of the club. You need to make sure that everything works well and members can learn and enjoy themselves in the club. Enjoy your club!

When the midday nap bell rings, Geng Xian from a foreign language school in Shenzhen pulls out the footrest, reclines (向后倚靠) on her chair and lies back for a nap with her classmates.
Since May 6th, the school has introduced reclining chairs for students to nap during the lunch breaks. The chairs have been used across four grades, with over 100 sets provided for Grade 9.
“Before this, I could only rest at my desk for a nap, often leading to my hands and neck uncomfortable. Sometimes I even found myself pressing my eyes against my arms, causing pains,” the 15-year-old Geng complained. “Now, lying down for sleep is very comfortable, just like being at home.”

Dear Simon,
Thank you so much for your email. I’m very happy to tell you about my school life.
I’m in the Reading Club. We read English storybooks and share our ideas every Friday, which helps improve my English.
My good friend is Daniel. He is friendly and always has a smile on his face. In our free time, we often go to the library to borrow books or talk about the stories we read.
This term our school will have a book fair, where we can buy old books and meet new friends who like reading.
I enjoy my school life as it's full of fun. I can learn new things and have a good time with friends.
How about your school life? Write to me soon.
Best wishes,
