To some, sunglasses are a fashion choice...
But When You' re Driving, These Sunglasses May Save Your Life!
Studies by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that most (74%) of the crashes occurred on clear, sunny days. Deadly accidents are regularly caused by blinding glare(强光).
Not all sunglasses are created equal. With all the fancy fashion eyewear designs out there, it can be easy to overlook what really matters—— the lenses(镜片).
But now, research by scientists from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory has brought forth ground-breaking technology. This superior lens technology was first discovered when NASA scientists looked to nature for a means to superior eye protection by studying the eyes of eagles, known for their extreme visual acuity(敏锐度). This discovery resulted in what is now known as Eagle Eyes®.Two Pairs of

In the early 19th century, New England farmers, tired of struggling with their poor land, journeyed to the Midwest. In states like Illinois and Iowa, they found rich, black soil. Unfortunately, many soon felt like thirsty sailors in the middle of the ocean—— water everywhere but not a drop to drink. They were surrounded by fertile soil, but had to stop every few seconds to remove the sticky dirt off their iron plus(犁) with large wooden paddles. This dilemma caught the attention of John Deere, a blacksmith who moved to Illinois in 1836.
Deere decided to look into the problem. From his previous work on plows, he knew that dirt was less likely to stick to highly polished metal. That thought was in the back of his mind when he visited a sawmill(锯木厂) in 1837 and noticed a broken saw made of steel. Deere brought it home and began making a better plow. The plow he wanted would have to cut deep into the soil at a sharp angle so that dirt would fall off, yet it could not put too much burden on the horses pulling it. After several experiments, Deere constructed a new plow that featured wood handles. It proved a success. Unlike the old iron plows, Deere's not only had a blade from which dirt fell away cleanly, but it also turned the soil more efficiently and quickly.
Demand for Deere's plows increased sharply, but production was limited by the shortage of polished steel. Initially, Deere could only produce a few plus each year. However, Deere's persistence paid off as he sourced cheaper steel from Pittsburgh. Amazingly, in 1857, his company manufactured and sold 10,000 plows!
Deere, a perfectionist, continually improved his plows, introducing multiple new versions in a single year. While this slowed down his production ability, it ensured Deere a solid reputation among his customers. Deere plows became world famous in the 1870s when they outshone the competition in a demonstration in France. That same decade, his company built its first riding plow and designed the leaping deer as its trademark.

a children's book, tells the story of tiny medaka fish riding on a bird to a distant pond. It has delighted children, but now it's revealed to be true.
Researchers have long struggled to explain how fish turn up in lakes far from other bodies of water, a mystery even Charles Darwin noted in 1859, when he suggested that aquatic(水生的) hatchlings might stick to the feet of birds, though his bright idea remained a theory.
In 2019, Yao Akifumi, a biology student then, wondered if Darwin might have been right and further wondered if fish-hunting birds might transport egg-bearing aquatic plants stuck to their feet. To test this, he set up two ponds one metre apart, one containing 36 plants and the other without, both equipped with camera traps. After six months, some plants had switched ponds, and one camera captured a bird flying away with a plant on its foot. Next, Yao aimed to see if fish eggs could weather the journey being carried out of water. He attached tiny medaka eggs to aquatic plants and removed them for zero to 24 hours— at favorable hatching conditions —— before returning them.
In a paper in Science of Nature, Mr. Yao reports that the medaka eggs can successfully hatch after up to 18 hours out of the water. Eggs without a plant leaf to attach to rarely survived a few hours. The big drop in survival was at 16.3 hours, when half the eggs became lifeless.
Whether any egg could survive that long, given that a bird's average flight-speed is around 39kph, is doubtful, says Mr Yao, since wind exposure during such a long journey would dry them out.
Shorter journeys, however, are certainly possible. And since many other medaka-like species are found throughout Asia, the chances are high that hitchhiking (搭便车) explains how they have ended up in lakes with seemingly no connection to other water bodies. Yet again, it would seem, Darwin's theories turn out to be correct.
28. Why does the author mention Darwin's idea?
A. To introduce an academic term.
B. To provide research background.
C. To question a well-known theory.
D. To explore new research methods.
29. What evidence did Yao find to support his assumption?
A. Birds flying between ponds.
B. Fish eggs surviving on plants.
C. A plant growing in both ponds.
D. A bird carrying a plant on its foot.
30. What may increase medaka eggs' survival?
A. Birds’ flying route. B. Wind exposure.
C. Supporting leaves. D. Longer journey.
31. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Children's book inspires research.
B. Origin of fish has been uncovered.
C. Fish's hitch riding has been proven.
D. Eggs and plants have a close relation.

The idea that night owls who don't go to bed until the early hours struggle to get anything done during the day may have to be revised. It turns out that staying up late could be good for our brain power as research suggests that people who identify as night owls could be sharper than those who go to be early.
Researchers led by academics at Imperial College London studied data from the UK Biobank study on more than 26,000 people who had completed intelligence, reasoning, reaction time and memory tests. They then examined how participants' sleep duration, quality, and chronotype (时间型) affected brain performance. They found that those who stay up late and those classed as “intermediate” had “superior cognitive function”, while morning larks had the lowest scores. Going to bed late is strongly associated with creative types. Artists, authors and musicians known to be night owls include James Joyce and Lady Gaga.
But while politicians like Barack Obama famously seemed to thrive on little sleep, the study found that sleep duration is important for brain function, with those getting between seven and nine hours of shut-eye each night performing best in cognitive tests. Prof Daqi ng Ma, the co-leader of the study, added, “We found that sleep duration has a direct effect on brain function, and we believe that actively managing sleep patterns is really important for boosting and safeguarding the way our brains work. We'd ideally like to see policy interventions(干预) to help sleep patterns improve in the general population.”
Some experts, however, urged caution in interpreting the findings. Jessica Chelekis, a sleep expert at Brunel University London, said there were “important limitations” to the study as the research did not account for education attainment, or include the time of day the cognitive tests were conducted in the results. The main value of the study was challenging stereotypes around sleep, she added.
32. Why are James Joyce and Lady Gaga mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. To provide examples of intermediate people.
B. To suggest most successful artists are night owls.
C. To prove artists have superior cognitive function.
D. To show the link between late hours and creativity.
33. Which statement will Prof Daqing Ma probably agree with?
A. All sleep lengths equally improve brain function.
B. Parents shouldn't intervene children's sleep pattern.
C. Schools should start later to fit teens' body clocks.
D. Sleep duration is more important than sleep quality.
34. What does the underlined word “stereotypes” mean in the fourth paragraph?
A. scientific discoveries B. personal preferences
C. fixed beliefs D. recent trends
35. What is the author's attitude towards the new study?
A. Objective. B. Skeptical
C. Appreciative D. Critical
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
I've always disliked getting up in winter. As a child, I would drag myself out of bed, my eyes half-closed, and watch my school uniform warming on the radiator(暖气片). 36 It's too dark, and I am always half-asleep.
37 Most of them are fun, but few really change my life in the long run. Sunrise alarm clocks, however, are different. They've become a fundamental part of my morning routine. My top picks, the Lumie Body clock Spark 100 and Philips Smart Sleep, have greatly benefited me. I'm waking up every day feeling more energetic and mentally sharper.
Essentially, sunrise alarm clocks are a combination of alarm clock and light treatment device that shines with increasing brightness as your wake-up time approaches. The light interacts with our natural sleep-wake cycle, much as the sun does when it rises. 38
Sunrise alarm clocks also promote healthier sleep habits. In our tech-driven world, waking up often means immediately checking our phones. An important strength of sunrise alarm clocks is that your morning wake-up no longer involves your phone. Stopping a smartphone alarm means your day begins with eyes on-screen. 39 But with these clocks, you can start the day with a clearer mind and more concentration.
Sleep is personal, and no single device fits everyone. But for me, sunrise alarm clocks have been a game-changer. They' re affordable, with quality models available for under£30. 40 After all, some morning people are made, not born.
A. They prove to fall into this unique category.
B. Interested in tech, I often test fascinating devices.
C. Therefore, we wake up biologically prepared for the day.
D. The path to endless screen time is just a fingerprint away.
E. These days, I set multiple alarms to ensure I'm woken up.
F. If you are struggling with dark mornings, it's worth a shot.
G. All of the sunrise alarm clocks I've tested have their strengths.

Originally constructed around 256 BCE by the State of Qin as an irrigation(灌溉) and flood control system, Dujiangyan is a remarkable example of ancient 56 (engineer) skill and is still in use today.
During the Warring States period, people living along the banks of the Min River were troubled by annual flooding. Irrigation engineer Li Bing 57 (lead)a team to construct an embankment(堤坝)to redirect part of the river's flow upon thorough investigation. Then they cut a channel through Mount Yulei to let out the extra water. During the construction, cutting the channel proved to be a much more challenging task than 58 (anticipate), as the tools available could not break through the hard rock of the mountain. Therefore, they used a 59 (combine) of fire and water to heat and cool the rocks until they broke 60 could be removed, Once completed, the system prevented floods and made Sichuan one of China’ s most productive 61 (agriculture) regions by using the redirected water 62 irrigation.
Now if you visit Dujiangyan, you will see an unusual construction 63 looks like a fish's mouth. This famous attraction, Yuzui, together with two other important parts, namely, Feishayan and Baopingkou, 64 (design) scientifically to control the water flow throughout the year. 第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My 12-year-old daughter is smart, even sharper than I was at her age, but she just wouldn't pick up a chapter book for fun. School books were tough for her, and when it came to free time, she stuck to picture books and listened to “Harry Potter” audiobooks. None of these really got her into deep reading, where you stare at words on paper and let your imagination fly.
For a while, I had to face the truth: I hadn't passed on the joy of reading to her. I tried telling her how reading makes life richer, but she shrugged(耸肩) and said, “Lots of my friends don’ t like reading either. It's no big deal.”
Things went worse when she got a smartphone last year. Suddenly, my lively child became lazy, always on her phone. I suggested other fun activities, but she just found them “boring.” I still held out hope for reading, seeing it as a developmental escape. But the problem was that she chose the colorful, noisy world of her phone.
Then, right before we left for an 8-day holiday on a beautiful Greek island, we talked about reading again. “Novels are the best way to understand how people feel,” I told her. “I can learn more from social media,” she replied. I mentioned storytelling and history, and she said, “I can watch movies and use the internet.” I even promised to buy her any books she liked, but she smiled and said, “Mama, welcome to your dream.”
I realized I couldn't win. She had good reasons and I couldn't say she was wrong. Sure, reading opens up new worlds, but so does the whole internet. Still, deep down, I wished she'd experience the pure magic of reading—— those special moments when an author says exactly what you've always felt but never knew how to express.

Dear Peter,
I’m glad to hear of your exhibition about Chinese culture. I would like to offer my recommendations.
As a passionate advocate for promoting cultural heritage, I believe that a section dedicated to traditional Chinese tea ceremonies would provide visitors with a sensory experience like no other. Also I suggest hands-on workshops be included where visitors can try their hand at traditional Chinese arts and crafts such as paper cutting, knot tying, or calligraphy. By connecting with the audience, the exhibition can offer a comprehensive exploration of Chinese traditional culture.
Thank you for considering my advice. Looking forward to the opening of the exhibition.
Yours,
Li Hua
Version 1
So, instead of talking more, I decided to offer a reward.I proposed a deal,“Sweetheart, if you read a novel during the holiday, I'd buy you the latest model of your favorite brand's earphones.”This really aroused her curiosity and she agreed to give it a try, with a flicker of surprise flashing in her eyes. I painstakingly picked out a fantasy novel that boasted stunning illustrations and a gripping storyline. At first, she read with a sense of obligation. But the deeper she got into the book, the more she was captivated.Lying on the sun - lounger, she flipped through the pages, completely immersed in the story and no longer reaching for her phone every few minutes.
By the end of the holiday, my daughter finished her book and asked for another."Mom, I'm hooked! I can't believe I've been missing out on all these wonderful stories. Reading is like a treasure chest," she exclaimed, clutching the book tightly, as if afraid to let go of the newfound joy within its pages.A rush of joy flooded me as I saw how my fresh strategy had ignited her passion for reading, my initial worries melting into relief. What began as a simple attempt to get my child interested in books blossomed into a transformative experience, illuminating the power of tailored encouragement, and unlocking a universe of wisdom and imagination within pages.
Version 2
So, instead of talking more, I decided to offer a reward. I told her that if she read a book during the holiday, I would buy her a new phone case she had been eyeing. She hesitated but finally agreed. I carefully chose some adventure and mystery books that I thought she might enjoy. Surprisingly, she picked an adventure book and started reading it on the plane. At first, she seemed reluctant, glancing up often. But as time went on, she became more absorbed. She would sit by the window of our beachfront villa, completely lost in the book. I could see the excitement in her eyes as she turned each page, eager to know what happened next.
By the end of the holiday, my daughter finished her book and asked for another. I was overjoyed to see her enthusiasm. She told me how much she enjoyed the book and how it made her feel like she was part of the adventure. Her eyes sparkled as she described the thrilling plot twists and vivid characters. It was a moment of triumph for me, but more importantly, a moment of discovery for her. I realized that maybe all she needed was a little push and the right book to ignite her love for reading. As I watched her dive into the next book, I felt a deep sense of satisfaction. The magic of reading, once a distant dream, had finally found its way into her heart.
