Unit 2 Safety-Reading Club1&2 In this unit, the theme is "Safety". Reading Club 1&2 provides students with two reading materials related to safety. The first passage might focus on personal safety in daily life, such as safety rules at home, at school or on the street. It may introduce various potential dangers and corresponding preventive measures. The second passage could be about safety in case of emergencies, like natural disasters (earthquakes, floods) or man - made disasters (fires, traffic accidents). Through these readings, students are expected to not only improve their reading skills but also enhance their awareness of safety. 教学目标 A. Knowledge Objectives Students will be able to master the key vocabulary and phrases related to safety, such as "accident", "emergency", "first aid", "safety rule", "prevent", "protect" etc. Students will understand the usage of some important sentence patterns in the reading materials, for example, "It is important to do sth.", "We should/ought to do sth. to keep safe." Students will be familiar with different types of safety knowledge presented in the texts. B. Ability Objectives Improve students' reading skills, including skimming for the main idea, scanning for specific information, and inferring the meaning of new words from context. Enable students to summarize the main content of each passage in their own words. Develop students' ability to express their opinions on safety issues orally and in writing. C. Emotional Objectives Raise students' awareness of safety and make them realize the importance of protecting themselves and others. Lead - in (5 minutes) Show some pictures of different safety accidents, such as a car accident, a fire in a building, and a person slipping on the wet floor. Ask students: "What do you think has happened in these pictures? Do you know how to avoid such accidents?" Let students discuss in pairs for about 2 minutes and then invite some pairs to share their ideas. B. Pre - reading (8 minutes) Present some new words and phrases related to the reading passages on the PPT. Teach students how to pronounce and explain the meanings briefly. For example, when teaching "emergency", show some pictures of emergency scenes like an ambulance rushing to the hospital, and explain that it means a serious and dangerous situation that needs immediate action. Let students predict the content of the reading passages according to the title and the pictures shown before. Divide students into groups of four and give them 3 minutes to discuss. Then ask each group to choose a representative to share their predictions. C. While - reading (20 minutes) Skimming (3 minutes) Ask students to read the two passages quickly within 2 minutes. Then ask them to answer the question: "What is the main idea of each passage?" Give them another minute to think and write down their answers. Invite several students to share their answers. Scanning (7 minutes) For Reading Club 1, present some detailed questions on the PPT, such as "What are the three common safety rules at school mentioned in the passage?" "Why should we follow these rules?" Ask students to read the passage again carefully to find the answers. Give them 3 minutes to read and answer. Then check the answers together. Do the same for Reading Club 2. For example, ask questions like "What should we do first when an earthquake happens?" "Name two ways to protect ourselves from a flood." Let students read and answer within 4 minutes. In - depth reading (10 minutes) Choose some difficult sentences from the passages, write them on the blackboard or show them on the PPT. Analyze the sentence structures and explain the meanings. For example, for the sentence "It is crucial that we stay calm and follow the safety instructions when an emergency occurs.", explain the "It is + adj. + that - clause" structure. Let students read the passages one more time and summarize each paragraph in one or two sentences. Then ask them to exchange their summaries with their partners and make improvements if necessary. D. Post - reading (10 minutes) Group discussion (5 minutes) Divide students into groups of five or six. Give each group a safety - related topic, such as "How to stay safe when traveling alone", "Safety at home for the elderly", or "Safety on the Internet". Give them 5 minutes to write. After they finish writing, ask some students to read their passages aloud. E. Summary and Homework (2 minutes) Summary (1 minute) Briefly summarize the key points of this class, including the new vocabulary, reading skills and safety knowledge learned. Homework (1 minute) Ask students to search for more safety information on the Internet or in books and share it with the class next time.
