Unit 3 Home and Places-Topic Talk
1. Content Overview
This topic talk in Unit 3 of the 2024 Beijing Normal University Edition English textbook for Grade 7 focuses on "Home and Places". It begins with familiarizing students with words related to rooms, furniture, and equipment in a home, such as "living room", "kitchen", "sofa", "fridge", etc. The main part is a dialogue where Grace describes her new flat, including the rooms and furniture in it. Through this, students are expected to learn how to describe their own homes. Additionally, there are activities like drawing and talking about one's home, and a song related to the theme of home to deepen students' emotional understanding of "home".

教学过程
5.1 Lead - in (5 minutes)
Greet the students and show them some pictures of different types of houses. Ask them: "What kind of house would you like to live in? Why?" Encourage several students to share their ideas.
Then, say: "Today, we are going to learn about Grace's new flat. Let's see what it is like." This step aims to arouse students' interest and activate their prior knowledge about homes.
5.2 Pre - listening (8 minutes)
Hand out a handout with a simple layout of a flat (similar to what might be in the textbook but without labels). Ask students to work in pairs and guess what rooms are in the flat.
Then, present a list of room names and furniture names on the blackboard or through PPT. Read them aloud and let students repeat after you. Explain the meaning of any new or difficult words. For example, for "washing machine", show a picture and say: "This is a machine that we use to wash our clothes. It is called a washing machine."
Next, ask students to label the rooms and try to draw some furniture in the corresponding rooms on the handout. This activity helps students get familiar with the vocabulary and sets the stage for the listening part.
5.3 While - listening (12 minutes)
First Listening:
Tell students: "Now, listen to the dialogue between Grace and Sandy about Grace's new flat. Try to find out the main things Grace says about her flat." Play the audio recording of the dialogue. After listening, ask students to share their answers briefly. The main aspects are usually the rooms in the flat and the furniture in each room.
Second Listening:
Say: "Listen to the dialogue again. This time, fill in the blanks in your handout. Pay attention to the sentence structures Grace uses to describe her flat." Distribute a handout with blanks related to the dialogue content, such as "There is a ______ in the living room." and "I have got a ______ in the bedroom." Play the audio again. After listening, check the answers with the whole class. Then, focus on the sentence structures "There is/are..." and "I have got...". Write some examples on the blackboard and explain how to use them. For example: "When we want to say something exists in a place, we use 'There is/are...'. When we want to say we possess something in a certain place, we can use 'I have got...'."
5.4 Post - listening (15 minutes)
Role - play:
Divide students into pairs. One student plays Grace and the other plays Sandy. They role - play the dialogue they just heard. Walk around the classroom to monitor and offer help if necessary. After a few minutes, invite some pairs to come to the front of the class and perform the dialogue for the whole class.
Draw and Describe:
Ask students to draw a simple layout of their own homes on a piece of paper. Then, use the sentence structures "There is/are..." and "I have got..." to write a short description about their homes. Encourage them to add some adjectives to describe the rooms or furniture, like "There is a big and comfortable sofa in the living room." or "I have got a small but lovely bedroom."
After they finish writing, ask them to share their descriptions with their partners. Each partner should listen carefully and give some feedback, such as asking for more details or making suggestions for improvement.
Song Appreciation:
Play the song "Home, Sweet Home". Before playing, tell students to listen carefully and circle the words that show home is a good place. After playing, ask students to share the words they circled, like "happiness", "love", "perfect". Then, have a short discussion: "Why do these words show that home is a good place? How do you feel about your home?" Guide students to think about the emotional meaning of home.
5.5 Summary and Homework (5 minutes)
Summary:
Summarize the key points of this class with the students, including the important vocabulary about homes, the sentence structures "There is/are..." and "I have got...", and the understanding of the emotional meaning of home.
Homework:
Ask students to write a more detailed passage about their homes, using at least 8 sentences with the learned sentence structures and vocabulary.
Encourage them to decorate their written work with some pictures of their homes if possible.
教学反思
Positive Aspects:
The use of pictures and real - life - related questions in the lead - in part successfully engaged students' interest and made them actively participate in the class discussion.
The step - by - step listening activities, from getting the main idea to filling in the blanks, effectively helped students understand the dialogue content and master the key sentence structures.
The role - play and draw - and - describe activities provided students with sufficient opportunities to practice speaking and writing, which improved their language application ability.
Areas for Improvement:
Some students still had difficulties in using the "There be" and "I have got" structures accurately, especially when adding complex descriptions. More guided practice and individual correction might be needed in future classes.
During the group work, a few students were less involved. In the future, it is necessary to find ways to encourage every student to actively participate, such as setting clear group roles and assessment methods.
The time for the song appreciation part was a bit tight, and the discussion about the emotional meaning of home could have been deeper. In the next teaching, more time should be allocated to this part to better explore the emotional objectives.
