Nearly a year ago, on a sunny July day, I drove to a nearby lake with my family and friends to have a picnic. I couldn’t wait to get in the water because I loved swimming. “Here I go,” I shouted, laughing, as I dove (跳水) from a boat dock into the lake. That was the last thing I remember. I was unconscious and pulled from the water with a severed spine (脊柱断裂), and paralyzed from the waist down.
After months of hospitalization, I was finally home. But things weren’t going well. I had to face many lifestyle changes. The gray sky outside my window matched how I felt inside. I sighed and turned away. Life had lost all meaning. I was impatient with myself as well as my family.
A few days later, I poured out my despondency to Jerry, a good friend of mine. “I don’t feel like I have a reason to get out of bed,” I told him. Jerry was quiet with his eyes focused on my mulberry tree. “Look,” he whispered. “There’s a cardinal (a kind of bird).” I saw it on that lower branch to the right. Cheer, cheer, cheer, the cardinal sang in a sweet voice. I’d seen cardinals before. Now as I studied this one, I realized I’d never really seen a cardinal. It was beautiful.
As I watched the elegant bird, something clicked (茅塞顿开). The hope of life, like a light, was awakened inside me. After Jerry left, I wheeled to the front of the house, smiled at the sky and felt relieved.
I now take bird watching as my new hobby. I record interesting sightings in my diary and photograph every bird I meet. Besides, I feel a new kind of pleasure when taking care of the potted plants in my yard. Of course, I still face many difficulties every day, but when I look out of my window, I see birds. And when I see birds, I see miracles (奇迹). And I’ve found my place among them.

The players come from a variety of backgrounds. They are vendors, drivers, students, carpenters, tilers, former butchers and brick factory workers. Their ages range from 15 to over 40 years old. At the game site, representatives wearing various traditional national costumes play national musical. instruments and enter the arena (竞技场) with the players, and perform songs and dances.
“This kind of football game is natural and with ‘pureness’ and it is driven by the enthusiasm of the ordinary people not the economic benefits. The game is providing not only values of sports, but also a way of socialising with low costs,” an expert noted. “This kind of atmosphere is very rarely seen and is treasured, especially for people in urban areas who are getting increasingly busy and under great work pressure, and when they look at the fun, relaxing and down-to-earth way of life in the countryside, they will naturally be interested,” experts said. There is at least one good impact brought by “Cun Chao” to Chinese soccer—to make more people see the pureness of joy brought by the sport and encourage them to play soccer.

When colds and flu hit, many people automatically turn to over-the-counter (OTC) medicines to push through and treat their symptoms. Although these medicines are easily accessible and widely used, it might come as a surprise to many people to learn that they are not risk-free. A study estimated that every year, 26,735 people went to the emergency room for adverse (不利的) events related to OTC cold and cough medicines.
When two or more drugs are used together, their interactions can sometimes produce unexpected harmful effects. Physicians are typically knowledgeable about potential drug interactions, so it is very important for patients to ask their healthcare providers which OTC medicines are safe for them to use.
It is important to read the package ingredients of OTC medicines closely to avoid duplication of doses (剂量重复). Cold medicines are typically made up of multiple ingredients. A person who takes a single-ingredient medicine paired with one of these multi-ingredient medicines can receive an unsafe dose of that ingredient.
While everyone could potentially experience adverse effects from cold and flu medicines, some groups — including older adults, children and pregnant women — may be at greater risk. Older people who are using prescribed drugs to treat multiple health conditions may have a higher risk of drug interactions because of the higher number of medicines being used at the same time to treat different conditions. The aging body is not as expert at absorbing, distributing and clearing medicines as younger bodies are. This can put older adults at higher risk for an overdose and drug-to-drug interactions with some medicines.
The Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention do not recommend giving cold medicines to children under age 4. Because of a variety of factors, young children have a higher risk of an accidental overdose and adverse events that could lead to death.
12. What does the author advise patients to do in Paragraph 2?
A. To ask for suggestions from doctors. B. To buy medicines from hospitals.
C. To read the package ingredients of drugs. D. To take drugs as early as possible.
13. What’s the purpose of mentioning cold medicines in Paragraph 3?
A. To provide a medical choice for people who catch a cold.
B. To show cold medicines are more likely to cause bad effects.
C. To explain OTC medicines often have more than one ingredient.
D. To stress the importance of learning about medicines’ ingredients.
14. What can we infer about older people in Paragraph 4?
A. They can’t cope with aging positively. B. Their body can’t handle medicines easily.
C. They are more easily affected by diseases. D. Their desire for health makes them unwise.
15. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. Say No to OTC Drugs B. Tips on Taking OTC Drugs
C. OTC Medicines May Not Be Safe D. How to Deal with an OTC Drug Overdose
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. B 15. C

A person who takes a single-ingredient medicine paired with one of these multi-ingredient medicines can receive an unsafe dose of that ingredient.(仔细阅读非处方药的包装成分以避免重复剂量是很重要的。
根据第四段中的“Older people who are using prescribed drugs to treat multiple health conditions may have a higher risk of drug interactions because of the higher number of medicines being used at the same time to treat different conditions. The aging body is not as expert at absorbing, distributing and clearing medicines as younger bodies are.(使用处方药治疗多种健康状况的老年人可能有更高的药物相互作用风险,因为同时使用更多的药物来治疗不同的疾病。衰老的身体不像年轻的身体那样擅长吸收、分配和清除药物。)”可以推断出老年人的身体不容易接受药物。故选B。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章大意以及第一段中的“When colds and flu hit, many people automatically turn to over-the-counter (OTC) medicines to push through and treat their symptoms. Although these medicines are easily accessible and widely used, it might come as a surprise to many people to learn that they are not risk-free.(当感冒和流感来袭时,许多人会不由自主地求助于非处方药(OTC)来克服和治疗他们的症状。虽然这些药物很容易获得并被广泛使用,但许多人可能会惊讶地发现它们并非没有风险。)”可知,本文主要讲的是非处方药(OTC),如感冒和流感药物的风险。C选项“OTC Medicines May Not Be Safe(非处方药可能不安全)”最适合用作本文的标题。故选C。

Signs that You Are Growing
Growing is a lifelong process. Here are the signs that show you are actually growing and not getting stuck in the process.
____16____
Often, we see how badly people look when they get overly upset due to unimportant things. So the first sign of maturity (成熟) is letting the small things go and not getting angry over a tiny detail that didn’t go as you planned.
You start forgiving and understanding other people.
When we are young, we are often unforgiving. As we mature, we are better able to understand the world beyond black and white. Becoming more understanding is a sign of strength, not weakness. ____17____ We begin to understand better that others have complex lives and personalities, and so we become more willing to forgive their mistakes.
You always complete things that matter.
Immature people don’t know when to commit (承诺) themselves and their energy or resources are always not well employed. ____18____ In this way, they can often keep their promises and honor their commitments.
You accept the possibility of being wrong.
____19____ They are always able to accept the possibility that they are wrong and that they don’t know something, because there is always more to learn.
Being mature is knowing that you are always growing up. You are never done learning and developing. ____20____ Rather, you open your mind to other ideas and new possibilities.
A. You follow the crowd.
B. You let the small things go.
C. Instead, mature people focus on completing things that matter.
D. Immature and mature people can both have plans for their lives.
E. This means that you don’t set yourself up as the highest authority.
F. It enables us to look beyond the obvious and let go of simple judgments.
G. Mature people appear more confident, however, they are not overconfident.
【答案】16. B 17. F 18. C 19. G 20. E
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了四种可以表明你变得成熟的迹象。
【16题详解】
根据本段内容“Often, we see how badly people look when they get overly upset due to unimportant things. So the first sign of maturity is letting the small things go and not getting angry over a tiny de tail that didn’t go as you planned.(我们常常看到,当人们因为不重要的事情而过度心烦意乱时,他们的表情会变得多么糟糕。因此,成熟的第一个标志就是放手去做小事,不要因为没有按计划进行的微小细节而生气。)”可知,本段提到“让小事过去,不要因为没有按计划进行的小细节而生气”,即建议不计较小事情。B项“You let the small things go.(你不计较小事)”适合作本节的小标题。故选B。
【17题详解】
根据上句“Becoming more understanding is a sign of strength, not weakness.(变得更加理解是力量的标志,而不是软弱的标志。)”可知,变得更加善解人意是变强的一个迹象;根据下句“We begin to understand better that others havecomplex lives and personalities, and so we become more willing to forgive their mistakes.(我们开始更好地理解他人有复杂的生活和性格,因此我们更愿意原谅他们的错误。)”可知,我们开始更好地理解他人,因此我们变得更愿意原谅他们的错误。这是成长的优点。F项“It enables us to look beyond the obvious and let go of simple judgments.(它使得我们能够深层次地看问题,从而放弃简单的评价)”承上启下,符合题意。故选F。
【18题详解】
根据上句“Immature people don’t know when to commit themselves and their energy or resources are always not well employed.(不成熟的人不知道什么时候该付出自己的努力,他们的精力或资源总是没有得到很好的利用。)”及下句“In this way, they can often keep their promises and honor their commitments.(这样,他们往往就能信守诺言,兑现承诺。)”可知,上文提到了不成熟的人的做法,那么本句是在说明成熟的人会怎么做。C项中的“mature people”与上文中的“Immature people”相对应。C项“Instead, mature people focus on completing things that matter.(相反,成熟的人专注于完成重要的事情。)”符合语境。故选C。
【19题详解】
根据本节的小标题“You accept the possibility of being wrong(你接受犯错的可能性)”及下句“They are always able to accept the possibility that they are wrong and that they don’t know something, because there is always more to learn.(他们总是能够接受自己错了以及自己不知道的可能性,因为总是有更多东西需要学习。)”可知,后文提到了某种人能够接受自己错了的可能性,认识到有更多的东西需要学习, G项中的“Mature people”对应后文的“They”。G项“Mature people appear more confident, however, they are not overconfident.(成熟的人看起来更自信,然而,他们并不是过度自信)”符合语境。故选G。
【20题详解】
根据前文“Being mature is knowing that you are always growing up. You are never done learning and developing.(成熟就是知道自己一直在成长。你永远不会停止学习和发展。)”可知,变得成熟的标志;根据下句“Rather, you open your mind to other ideas and new possibilities.(相反,你会敞开心扉接受其他的想法和新的可能性)”可知,与前一句进行转折,不停止学习就意味着自己有很多需要成长的地方;E项“This means that you don’t set yourself up as the highest authority.(这意味着你没有把自己设定为最高权威)”,this指代前面的You are never done learning and developing,承上启下,符合题意。故选E。

The village super league, or “Cun Chao” in Chinese, is a soccer game among different villages in Rongjiang County, Southwest China’s Guizhou Province, and it is so down-to-earth but popular that it has attracted not only the attention of football legend Michael Owen, but also millions of Chinese netizens (网民), who are paying attention to this non-professional football league.
Today, more and more grassroots sports events are held in the mountains and are using sports as a medium to showcase the unique charm of the local area, reflecting a vibrant lifestyle filled with agricultural activities and rural fun.

A. To build more arena s in the countryside.
B. To help people know more about soccer.
C. To encourage more people to play soccer.
