教学过程
A. Warming - up (5 minutes)
Greet the students as usual.
Play a short video about birthday parties. After watching, ask students some simple questions like "What did you see in the video?" "Do you like birthday parties? Why?" This can quickly arouse students' interest and lead them into the topic of birthdays.
B. Presentation (15 minutes)
Vocabulary Teaching
Show the students a calendar on the PPT. Point to each month and teach the new words one by one. Read the words clearly and let students repeat several times. Pay attention to the pronunciation of difficult words like "February", "September".
Use flashcards with months written on them. Randomly show the cards and ask students to read the words quickly. This can help students remember the words better.
Then introduce ordinal numbers. Write the cardinal numbers 1 - 20 on the blackboard. First, teach the irregular ordinal numbers "first", "second", "third", "fifth", "eighth", "ninth", "twelfth" in detail. Explain the changes from cardinal to ordinal numbers. Then, for the regular ones, teach the rule of adding "-th" to the cardinal numbers. Let students practice reading and spelling.
Sentence Pattern Teaching
Present the key sentence pattern "When is your birthday?" on the PPT. Read it aloud and explain the meaning. Then ask a few students this question, and lead them to answer "My birthday is in.../My birthday is on...". Teach the usage of "in" and "on" at the same time. Use some examples on the PPT to illustrate, such as "My birthday is in July. (general month)" and "My birthday is on July 10th. (specific date)".
Divide the students into pairs. Let them practice asking and answering about birthdays using the sentence patterns. Walk around the classroom to monitor and offer help if necessary.
C. Listening (10 minutes)
Let the students open their textbooks to the listening part. First, ask them to look at the pictures and the sentences in the listening exercise. Briefly introduce the context. For example, say "Here are some conversations between friends. They are talking about their birthdays. Let's listen and find out their birthdays."
Play the recording for the first time. Let students just listen and get a general idea of the content.
Play the recording again. This time, ask students to listen carefully and fill in the blanks with the information they hear, such as the months and dates of the birthdays.
Check the answers with the whole class. Play the recording one more time if there are some controversial answers.
D. Speaking (10 minutes)
Group work: Divide the students into groups of four. Each student in the group needs to ask the others "When is your birthday?" and write down their answers. Then, each group chooses a representative to report the birthdays of the group members to the whole class. For example, "In our group, Tom's birthday is on March 8th, Mary's birthday is in June...".
Role - play: Set up a situation. Suppose there is a birthday party. One student acts as the host, and the others are guests. The host needs to welcome the guests and ask about their birthdays. The guests answer. Encourage students to add some other sentences related to birthdays, such as "Happy birthday!" "What do you usually do on your birthday?" Walk around the groups to observe and give guidance.
E. Summary and Homework (5 minutes)
Summary
Summarize the key points of this class with the students. Review the new words of months and ordinal numbers, as well as the key sentence patterns for asking about and stating birthdays. Ask students to recall the usage of "in" and "on" for time.
Invite some students to share what they have learned in this class.
Homework
Ask students to make a birthday calendar for their family members. Write down the names and birthdays of each family member on the calendar.
Let students write a short passage about their best friend's birthday, including the date, and what they usually do on that day. They can share their passages in the next class.
教学反思
After this class, overall, most students showed great interest in the topic of birthdays, which helped them actively participate in various activities. The use of multimedia resources like the birthday party video at the beginning successfully attracted students' attention and made the class atmosphere lively.
However, there were also some problems. During the vocabulary teaching, although various methods were used, some students still had difficulty in pronouncing and spelling some months and ordinal numbers correctly. Maybe more time and different ways, such as spelling games or tongue - twisters, should be designed to strengthen their memory.
In the listening part, a few students had trouble catching the specific information quickly. This might be due to their insufficient familiarity with the new words and sentence patterns. In the future, more listening practice with different speeds and accents can be provided to improve their listening skills.
During the speaking activities, some students were a bit shy to express themselves. More encouragement and positive feedback should be given to boost their confidence. Also, group work should be better organized to ensure that every student has enough opportunities to speak.
In conclusion, based on this reflection, adjustments and improvements will be made in the subsequent teaching to make the class more effective and beneficial for students' English learning.
