教学过程
1 Warming - up (5 minutes)
Greet the students as usual. Then show some pictures of students participating in different club activities on the PPT, such as students drawing in an art club, singing in a music club, playing basketball in a sports club, etc.
Ask students: “Boys and girls, look at these pictures. What are these students doing? Do you like these activities?” Encourage students to answer freely. This activity can arouse students' interest in the topic of clubs and lead in to the new lesson.
2 Presentation (10 minutes)
Vocabulary Teaching
Present the new vocabulary one by one on the PPT. For each club - related word, show a vivid picture related to it. For example, when presenting “art club”, show a picture of students drawing in an art studio. Read the word clearly and ask students to repeat after you several times. Pay attention to the correct pronunciation of each word.
After teaching all the vocabulary, play a vocabulary game. Say the name of a club, and ask students to quickly show the corresponding picture. Then change the way, show a picture, and ask students to quickly say the name of the club. This can help students consolidate the new words.
Sentence Teaching
Use the pictures again. Point to a picture of a student in a music club and ask: “What club does he want to join?” Help students answer: “He wants to join the music club.” Then write the sentence “What club do you want to join?” on the blackboard. Explain the meaning and structure of this sentence.
Then ask a student: “What club do you want to join?” Encourage the student to answer with “I want to join the... club.” Write this sentence on the blackboard as well. Practice this pair of sentences with several students.
Next, introduce the usage of “can”. Point to a picture of a student playing the guitar in the music club and ask: “Can he play the guitar?” Help students answer: “Yes, he can.” Write the questions and answers on the blackboard. Explain that “can” is used to ask about and express ability. Practice asking and answering “Can you...?” questions with students, such as “Can you swim?”, “Can you play chess?”
3 Practice (15 minutes)
Listen and Match
Let students open their textbooks to the relevant page. Play the recording of 1b. In this recording, some students are talking about the clubs they want to join. Ask students to listen carefully and match the people with the clubs they want to join. After playing the recording once, play it again if necessary. Then check the answers with the whole class.
Pair - work
Divide students into pairs. Give each pair a set of cards with different club names on one side and pictures of students doing club - related activities on the other side. Students take turns to pick up a card. If a student picks up a card with a club name, he / she asks the partner: “What club do you want to join?” The partner looks at the picture on his / her card and answers: “I want to join the... club.” Then they change roles. After they finish, they can also ask each other “Can you...?” questions according to the pictures. Walk around the classroom to monitor and offer help if necessary.
Group - work
Divide students into groups of four. Each group gets a piece of paper. The task for each group is to create a short dialogue about club - joining. In the dialogue, they should use the learned vocabulary and sentences, such as asking about club - joining intentions, expressing abilities, etc. After they finish writing the dialogue, ask each group to act out their dialogue in front of the class. The other groups listen carefully and can ask questions or give comments after the performance.
4 Production (10 minutes)
Writing Task
Ask students to write a short passage about the club they want to join. In the passage, they need to state the name of the club, the reasons why they want to join it, and what they can do in the club. Provide some sentence patterns on the PPT to help them, such as “I want to join the... club because... I can... in the club.” Walk around the classroom to offer guidance and help students with their writing.
Share and Show
After students finish writing, ask several students to come to the front of the class and share their passages. They can read their passages aloud or show their written work on the projector. Encourage other students to listen carefully and give applause or make simple comments. This can not only improve students' writing ability but also their confidence in expressing themselves in public.
5 Summary and Homework (5 minutes)
Summary
Summarize the key points of this lesson with the students, including the vocabulary about clubs, the target sentences for club - joining conversations, and the usage of “can” to express ability. Ask students to recall and repeat some of the important words and sentences.
Homework
Ask students to make a club - joining poster. They can draw pictures related to the club they want to join and write some sentences about it, such as the club name, what they can do in the club, and why they want to join. They can use the knowledge learned in this class.
Ask students to talk about their club - joining plans with their parents in English at home.
教学反思
After teaching this section, I found that the warming - up activity was effective in attracting students' attention and arousing their interest in the topic of clubs. The use of pictures in vocabulary and sentence presentation made the new knowledge more vivid and easier for students to understand.
However, during the pair - work and group - work activities, some students still had difficulties in using the target language fluently. Maybe I should have provided more model dialogues or given more guidance before they started the activities. Also, in the writing task, some students made grammar mistakes when using “can” and had problems with sentence structure. In future teaching, I need to strengthen the practice of grammar in real - life situations and provide more writing exercises.
Overall, through this lesson, most students have mastered the key vocabulary and sentences about club - joining, and have been able to communicate about this topic to some extent. But there is still room for improvement in teaching methods and activity design to better meet the needs of all students.
