阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Watching movies is one of the best ways to learn foreign languages. Here are some of our recommendations.
Roma
Roma is a beautifully shot film that focuses on Mexican society from a female perspective (视角). It tells the story of a young woman who used to work for the family of the film’s director, Alfonso Cuarón, when he was a child. It’s a very personal story that explores the relationship between the lower and upper classes in Latin America, which has remained the same for a long time. This movie is very suitable for a Spanish learner.
Parasite
This is the first foreign-language film to ever win an Oscar for Best Picture. Directed and written by South Korean filmmakers Bong Joon-ho, this deeply unsettling and darkly funny movie tells the story of a lower-class boy who gets a job as a private teacher for a wealthy family. The plot eventually takes a dark turn and becomes a sharp criticism of class differences and the power of the wealthy in South Korea.
Pan’s Labyrinth
Set in post-war Spain, the movie shows a young girl with an active imagination. She is struggling to adapt to life with her new stepfather. Part fantasy, part realism, Pan’s Labyrinth is not what you expect. You’re transported with the girl to a land of her own making that is magical, terrifying and unforgettable. This movie will stay with you for weeks after you watch it.
The Secret of the Grain
Directed by Abdellatif Kechiche, it follows a shipyard worker from an immigrant Arab community in the French port of Sète. After being laid off, he decides to open a restaurant. It delivers very insightful comments on the food and politics of the family in France.
1. Roma is originally shot in ________.
A. Spanish B. English C. French D. Korean
2. Which movie has been awarded an Oscar for Best Picture?
A. Roma. B. Pan’s Labyrinth.
C. Parasite. D. The Secret of the Grain.
3 What do the last two movies have in common?
A. They are based on the directors’ personal lives.
B. They are written from a female’s perspective.
C. They focus on the sharp differences of classes.
D. They explore the complex family relationships.
B
Labubu dolls are in short supply. Even at the stores of their maker, Pop Mart, in Shanghai, customers are told that they need to wait a week or longer. It is not just Chinese children trying to get their hands on them. Celebrities including Sir David Beckham, an ex-footballer, and Bieber, a pop star, have gone public with their appreciation.
“Labubu dolls are just one of the latest examples that show the fast growing popularity of Chinese products in China” says Lina Yan, a banker. “Part of their success has come from targeting price-sensitive spenders with high-quality, ‘emotive’ products.”
Yet consumer downgrading is only part of the explanation for the craze for Chinese brands. In many cases, shoppers are paying just as much or more for local products. For instance, the best-selling products at Chagee, a tea chain, are tea lattes that sell for 15—20 yuan, a price as high as Starbucks’s similar products in China.
Chinese consumers are also now far less attracted to foreign goods simply because they are foreign. Laopu’s rapid rise is proof of that. The firm, which sells gold jewellery with a distinct Chinese style, has managed to keep its annual sales per store above 300 million yuan, at least 50% higher than most of its foreign competitors.
For decades, Chinese shoppers looked overseas for the latest trends in fashion, beauty products and more. Western brands once filled the gap simply because there were no real local alternatives. However, that doesn’t mean Chinese consumers naturally appreciate the design or cultural message of those Western brands. For example, rather than trying to appear Western, both Laopu and Chagee have highlighted their Chineseness and it has worked.
This points to another shift in spending habits in China: Shoppers are better informed about products today than they used to be, mainly thanks to social media. Many feel that they have been fleeced by foreign companies that were able to sell at high prices purely by not being Chinese.
4. What phenomenon is described in the first paragraph?
A. The popularity of Labubu dolls. B. Slow delivery of Labubu dolls.
C. The added value of Labubu dolls. D. Celebrities’ love of Labubu dolls.
5. What does Lina Yan mean?
A. Chinese brands can offer more “emotive” value.
B. Chinese products are usually sold at lower prices.
C. Chinese youngsters can make better-informed decisions.
D. Chinese shoppers can afford to buy costly high-quality goods.
6. Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “fleeced” in the last paragraph?
A. Looked up to. B. Educated. C. Taken advantage of. D. Ruined.
7. Which factor is most unlikely to explain the Chinese brands’ success in China?
A. Its low price. B. Its high quality. C. Its short supply. D. Its foreignness.
C
Before 2021, the typically cool Pacific Northwest and western Canada seemed highly unlikely to get a killer heat wave, but they did. Many in North Carolina figured that hurricanes were a coastal problem until Helene blew in last year. After the deadly flood in central Texas in 1987, some thought they could handle the worst flooding in the future. Then came this month’s terrible flash flood that killed more than 179 people.
Climate change is making extreme weather events more frequent and intense, according to climate data. But experts warn that people and governments are generally living in the past and haven’t accepted that extreme weather is becoming a new norm
“There’s plenty of evidence that we start to experience things that just basically never happened before,” Princeton University climate scientist Michael Oppenheimer said" Unfortunately, when these risks are coming right at us like a fast-moving train, we just stand in the tracks. Then, all of a sudden, ‘Boom’”
“Time and again after catastrophic storms and wildfires, people whose lives were runed said they didn’t think they could happen to them again. It’s sort of a psychological mechanism (心理机制) to protect themselves from the terrible stress caused by those disasters But with extreme weather events happening more frequently and in more places, this mindset can prevent them from making proper preparations,” said Kim Klockow McClain, an extreme weather social scientist at the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research who studies communicating disaster warnings and risk. “The message needs to be, ‘If you’ re used to some degree of flooding, look at what happened in Texas and realize that this is a shifting baseline.’”
As for future disasters, the country needs to figure out and plan for the worst case instead of looking to the past. It’s obvious that we’ re living into a future where what used to be extreme becomes average, typical, and what used to never occur in a human lifetime or maybe even in a thousand years becomes the new extreme.
8. What message does the author want to convey in the first two paragraphs?
A. It is very difficult to predict natural disasters. B. It is dangerous to take the new situation lightly.
C. Cool areas are also affected by climate change. D. Extreme events used to occur more frequently
9. How does Michael Oppenheimer most probably feel about the current situation?
A. Satisfied. B. Regretful. C. Worried. D. Unconcerned.
10. How do the survivors react to similar future disasters, according to paragraph 4?
A. They usually appear to be too optimistic B. They are willing to seek professional advice.
C. They make great efforts to be ready for them. D. They tend to cooperate with the governments.
11. What does the author call on the governments and people to do?
A. Learn from the past B. Get prepared for the worst.
C. Move to safer places. D. Give in to the extreme climate.
D
As hurtful as it can be for a friend or partner to put us down, it is far worse when we find a critic in our own head that keeps criticizing and doubting ourselves. To break free from the self-criticism, and achieve inner peace and self-acceptance, an extremely important step is to understand the three “parts” of us: the inner critic, the inner victim and the inner observer.
The inner critic sits deeply within our sense of ourselves. That means that it — or the seeds of it — was placed there at an early age. For example, if our parents called us stupid or worthless as a child, it is understandable that our child-self would learn to be self-critical and view ourselves with doubt or even shame. Since all humans are imperfect, the inner critic’s message may make the inner victim “objectively” believe what the inner critic has said and feel worthless.
On the other hand, the inner observer is a kind of self-awareness. It understands the inner critic’s origin and motivation and, in all likelihood, would not agree with what the inner critic has said — and might even offer a few choice words in response. For instance, it might remind the inner victim, “Remember, even if you feel what the critic has said is true, it does not mean that it is true.” In other words, the inner observer offers a possibility for change by connecting with the two “parts” to help us achieve self-acceptance and inner peace.
Having recognized the dynamics among the three “parts” of us, we can start to break free from self-criticism. First, reflect on why the child-self so often feels bad in the upsetting present-day situations. Then, respond to the child-self’s pain with sympathy and compassion. Once the child-self’s pain is addressed, we are able to question or even free ourselves from self-criticism. Though it may be a long process from self-criticism to self-acceptance, in the end, we can find greater inner peace and build a happier relationship with ourselves.
To learn more about how to comfort the child-self, let’s watch this brief video, Healing Your Inner Child, now.
12. Which statement will the author probably agree with?
A. Self-doubt was born with human beings. B. The inner critic’s message is usually right.
C. Parents’ criticism may have lasting effects. D. Many adults are too sensitive to criticism.
13. What is the inner observer’s most important function?
A. To find good excuses for the self-child.
B. To provide reliable evidence for the inner critic.
C. To help us become more sympathetic towards others.
D. To challenge our false beliefs and heal us from within.
14. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The journey to self-acceptance. B. The various types of self-doubting.
C. The relationship among our three “parts”. D. The benefits of dealing with self-doubting.
15. Where is the text most probably taken from?
A. A textbook. B. A psychology lecture.
C. An advertisement. D. An introduction to a video.

Anna and Lingling: From Competitors to Friends
Anna and Lingling were both top students in their class, admired by teachers and classmates alike for their different talents. However, there was one thing they struggled with—getting along with each other. Whether in secret or openly, the two were always competing.
Anna was outgoing, excelling in public speaking and writing. She also loved extracurricular activities, from volunteering to joining clubs. Lingling, on the other hand, was a quiet and shy genius at solving complex math problems that seemed impossible to others. She rarely participated in anything except for studying. She even declared, “I don’t see the point in wasting time on things that don’t improve my grades.”
Their rivalry reached a peak when their teacher organized a debate on whether extracurricular activities were important for students.
“Of course extracurricular activities matter!” Anna argued passionately. “They help us develop social skills which are very important for all of us.”
Lingling countered just as firmly, “Studying should be our only focus now. Everything else is a waste of time.”
The debate became so heated that they ended up exchanging unkind words which deepened the divide between the two competitors.
Then, one evening, Anna and Lingling found themselves accidentally locked inside the school building. Since no one was willing to speak first, the atmosphere was embarrassing when they were waiting for the gatekeeper to open the door. As time dragged on, Anna finally broke the ice.
“Look,” Anna said hesitantly, “I know we don’t always agree, but I’ve always admired how easily you solve math problems. I could really use your help sometime.”
Lingling looked at Anna in surprise. After a pause, she admitted, “I was deeply impressed by your public speaking and writing, too. However, I was too proud to admit it.”

As they talked, the awkwardness was replaced by a growing appreciation of each other. Anna shared how extracurricular activities had enriched her life, while Lingling expressed her passion for math. By the time the gatekeeper arrived, they had already planned their first study session together. “Maybe both of us have been too stubborn,” Anna said with a smile. “I’m sure cooperation might benefit both of us and we could make an unstoppable team if we put aside our unfriendly competition.”
Since then, Anna and Lingling became close partners. With Lingling’s patient guidance, Anna was amazed to see how enjoyable math could be and her math skills improved rapidly. In return, Anna shared her tips on public speaking and took Lingling to different extracurricular activities. As time passed, even Lingling noticed the changes in herself. Eventually, both Anna and Lingling realized that once fierce competition was replaced by beneficial cooperation, they could achieve something extraordinary — not just academic success, but also newfound confidence and friendship.
