It was about 15 yards away and dropped into the water. Without hesitation, John said, he and a man jumped into the water to help the woman inside the car. “The car was at like 65% water, so then we had to get her out of the window because the door wasn’t opening,” he said. He and the man pulled the woman to safety, who lost consciousness (意识). John’s mom, Beth Agnello, called 911 at once. John wondered whether there was anybody else inside the car, so he jumped back into the water. Thankfully, the car was empty. “The only part that kind of scared me was when I was under the water inside the car, feeling around in there,” John said. “It was kind of like I got trapped in the car. But everything was fine.” Beth Agnello said she is so proud of her son who is being called a hero. “I’m hoping that he isn’t proud of being a hero and considers some work options for his future,” Beth Agnello said. John Agnello said he doesn’t know if he’ll be a first responder in the future, but he does know he loves helping others. “I think that’s just how my family raised me just to take action to help,” John Agnello said. St. Clair Shores police are investigating what caused the car to go into the water. Police said the woman was taken to the hospital to be examined. 4. Why did John go back under the water? 根据第二段“John wondered whether there was anybody else inside the car, so he jumped back into the water. Thankfully, the car was empty(John想知道车里是否还有其他人,于是他又跳回水里。幸运的是,车里是空的)”可知,John再次回到水下的目的是确认车里是否还有其他人。故选B项。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段““The only part that kind of scared me was when I was under the water inside the car, feeling around in there,” John said. “It was kind of like I got trapped in the car. But everything was fine.”(John说:“唯一让我有点害怕的是,当我在车里的水下,在里面摸索的时候。就好像我被困在车里了。不过一切都还好。”)”可知,让John感到害怕的是在车里水下摸索时感觉像被困在车里,也就是从车里出来的困难。故选D项。 【6题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段“Beth Agnello said she is so proud of her son who is being called a hero. “I’m hoping that he isn’t proud of being a hero and considers some work options for his future,” Beth Agnello said (Beth Agnello说,她为儿子感到骄傲,儿子被称为英雄。“我希望他不要因为被称为英雄而骄傲,而是要考虑一下自己未来的工作选择,”Beth Agnello说)”可知,Beth Agnello希望John不要因为被赞誉为英雄而骄傲,要保持脚踏实地,考虑未来的工作选择。故选C项。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段“Without hesitation, John said, he and a man jumped into the water to help the woman inside the car(John毫不犹豫地说,他和一名男子跳入水中,去帮助车里的女子)”最后一段“John Agnello said he doesn’t know if he’ll be a first responder in the future, but he does know he loves helping others.(John说,他不知道自己将来是否会成为第一响应者,但他知道自己喜欢帮助别人)”可推断出John是一个勇敢且乐于助人的人。故选A项。 C Some people think they have an answer to the problems of automobile (汽车) crowding and pollution in large cities. Their answer is the bicycle, or “bike”. In a great many cities, hundreds of people ride bicycles to work every day. In New York City, some bike riders have even formed a group called Bike for a Better City. They claim that if more people rode bicycles to work there would be fewer automobiles in the downtown (市中心) section of the city and therefore less dirty air from car engines. For several years this group has been trying to get the city government to help bicycle riders. For example, they want the city to paint special lanes (车道) for bicycles on some of the main streets, because when bicycle riders must use the same lanes as cars, there may be accidents. Bike for a Better City feels that if there were special lanes, more people would use bikes. But no bicycle lanes have been painted yet. Not everyone thinks it is a good idea. Taxi drivers don’t like the idea-they say it will slow traffic. Some store owners on the main streets don’t like the idea-they say that if there is less traffic, they will have less business. And most people live too far from downtown to travel by bike. The city government has not yet decided what to do. It wants to keep everyone happy. On weekends,Central Park-the largest open space in New York-is closed to cars, and the roads may be used by bicycles only. But Bike for a Better City says that this is not enough and keeps fighting to get bicycle lanes in the downtown. Until that happens, the safest place to bicycle may be in the park. 8. Some people have founded Bike for a Better City because _________. A. there are no bikes in New York City now B. they want to reduce the traffic and pollution C. there are no bike lanes in New York City now D. traffic has been too slow 9. Some people are against the idea of painting bike lanes because they think__________. A. they will not reduce the traffic B. there will be traffic accidents C. they will make traffic less and slower D. traffic moves slowly in bike lanes 10. Which is the best title for the text? A. The Safest Place for Bicycle Riders B. Special Lanes to a Greener City C. Fight for a Better Environment D. Less Traffic, Greener Cities 11. What is the attitude of the author towards painting bike lanes? A. Welcome. B. Negative. C. Surprised. D. Neutral. B 9. C 10. B 11. 根据文章第二段中的“ In New York City, some bike riders have even formed a group called Bike for a Better City. They claim that if more people rode bicycles to work there would be fewer automobiles in the downtown (市中心) section of the city and therefore less dirty air from car engines. (在纽约市,一些骑自行车的人甚至成立了一个名为“为了更好的城市而骑自行车”的组织。他们声称,如果更多的人骑自行车上班,那么市中心的汽车就会减少,从而减少汽车引擎排放的脏空气。)”可知,有些人成立这个组织是因为他们想要减少交通和污染。故选B。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第四段中的“Taxi drivers don't like the idea-they say it will slow traffic. Some store owners on the main streets don't like the idea-they say that if there is less traffic, they will have less business. B选项“Special Lanes to a Greener City (通往更绿色城市的专用通道)”符合题意。 根据文章最后一段中的“The city government has not yet decided what to do. It wants to keep everyone happy. (市政府尚未决定该如何处理此事。它希望能让所有人满意。)”以及整篇文章的描述,作者并没有明确表达自己对画自行车道的态度,而是客观地介绍了不同人群对此的看法和争议。因此,可以判断作者对画自行车道的态度是中立的。故选D。 D Researchers say they have translated the meaning of gestures that wild chimpanzees (黑猩猩) use to communicate. They say wild chimps communicate 19 specific messages to one another with a “vocabulary” of 66 gestures. The scientists discovered this by following and filming groups of chimps in Uganda, and examining more than 5,000 incidents of these meaningful exchanges. Dr Catherine Hobaiter, who led the research, said that this was the only form of intentional communication to be recorded in the animal kingdom. Only humans and chimps, she said, had a system of communication where they deliberately sent a message to another group member. “That’s what’s so amazing about chimp gestures,” she said. “They’re the only thing that looks like human language in that respect.” Although previous research has shown that apes and monkeys can understand complex information from another animal’s call, the animals do not appear to use their voices intentionally to communicate messages. This was a significant difference between calls and gestures, Dr Hobaiter said. Chimps will check to see if they have the attention of the animal with which they wish to communicate. In one case, a mother presents her foot to her crying baby, signaling: “Climb on me.” The youngster immediately jumps on to its mothers back and they travel off together. “The big message from this study is that there is another species (物种) out there. that is meaningful in its communication, so that’s not unique to humans,” said Dr Hobaiter. Dr Susanne Shultz, an evolutionary biologist from the University of Manchester, said the study was praiseworthy in seeking to enrich our knowledge of the evolution of human language. But, she added, the results were “a little disappointing”. “The vagueness of the gesture meanings suggests either that the chimps have little to communicate, or we are still missing a lot of the information contained in their gestures and actions,” she said. “Moreover, the meanings seem to not go beyond what other animal convey with non-verbal communication. So, it seems the gulf remains. ” 12. What do chimps and humans have in common according to Dr Hobaiter? A. Memorizing specific words. B. Understanding complex information. C. Using voices to communicate. D. Communicating messages on purpose. 13. What did Dr Shultz think of the study? A. It was well designed but poorly conducted. B. It was a good try but the findings were limited. C. It was inspiring but the evidence was unreliable. D. It was a failure but the methods deserved praise. 14. What does the underlined word “gulf” in the last paragraph mean? A. Difference. B. Conflict. C. Balance. D. Connection. 15. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. Chimpanzee behaviour study achieved a breakthrough B. Chimpanzees developed specific communication skills C. Chimpanzees: the smartest species in the animal kingdom D. Chimpanzee language: communication gestures translated 【答案】12. D 13. B 14. A 15. 根据第二段中的“Only humans and chimps, she said, had a system of communication where they deliberately sent a message to another group member.(她说,只有人类和黑猩猩有一个交流系统,它们故意向其他成员发送信息)”可知,根据Dr Hobaiter,黑猩猩和人类的共同点在于故意传递信息。 根据第六段中的“Dr Susanne Shultz, an evolutionary biologist from the University of Manchester, said the study was praiseworthy in seeking to enrich our knowledge of the evolution of human language. But, she added, the results were a little disappointing.(曼彻斯特大学的进化生物学家苏珊娜·舒尔茨博士说,这项研究是值得称赞的,它试图丰富我们对人类语言进化的知识。但是,她补充说,结果有点令人失望)”可知,这项研究是一个好的尝试,但是发现的结果是有限的。故选B。 【14题详解】 词句猜测题。首先根据第三段中的“They’re the only thing that looks like human language in that respect.(在这方面,它们是唯一看起来像人类语言的东西)”可知,黑猩猩的手势交流很像我们人类语言的交流方式。但是根据最后一段中的“Moreover, the meanings seem to not go beyond what other animals convey with non-verbal communications.(此外,这些含义似乎并不超越其他动物通过非语言交流所传达的信息)”可知,黑猩猩手势的交流方式还是和我们语言的交流方式存在不同的,也就是“So, it seems the gulf remains.(所以,看来差异依然存在)”。 故选A。 根据第一段的“Researchers say they have translated the meaning of gestures that wild chimpanzees use to communicate.(研究人员表示,他们已经翻译出了野生黑猩猩用来交流的手势的含义)”以及文章对这方面的讨论可知,文章主要讲科学家们对黑猩猩手势的研究及一些成果。 Show someone your support Sometimes people who are close to us go through difficult times. That could include coping with an illness or other big changes in their life. ____16____ Just wanting to support them is a good place to begin. Here are some ideas to consider. Let them know you care. Your friend or family member may feel like talking about what they are going through, or they may not. It’s always appropriate to let them know you care and will be there for them. ____17____ Making a video expressing your love for them is another option. You could also ask them if it would be OK to bring or mail them a baked treat, or you might put together a care package. Spend time together. ____18____ If possible, ask if they would like to do something together, like take a walk, watch a movie, or do a puzzle. If it’s a family member who lives far away, you can ask if they want to video chat or talk on the phone. You could also send them photos of your day to help them feel connected. ____19____ People who care about you likely want you to keep your daily routine as much as possible, even while they are going through something challenging. But you might also be able to step in when possible, with tasks like doing the dishes, looking after a pet, or ironing clothes. Pay attention to their needs and wants. This is often the hardest, but most important way to show you care. Even if they are just telling you a story about something silly that happened at the supermarket, it’s important that you respond appropriately. If you ignore them when it comes to simple things, they won’t feel that you care about them.____20____ A. Help out with small tasks. B. Stick to your daily routine. C. Your presence alone can be comforting. D. Even small gestures can mean a lot to others. E. You could show your care by making a card with a note inside. F. C Some people think they have an answer to the problems of automobile (汽车) crowding and pollution in large cities. A. Welcome. B. Negative. C. Surprised. D. Neutral. D Researchers say they have translated the meaning of gestures that wild chimpanzees (黑猩猩) use to communicate. C.
