B Sofie Roux, 26, was on a work trip to Malawi with her physician parents in 2019 when she befriended a girl named Faith. Their relation was close over their love of art and their future dreams: Roux wanted to be an architect; Faith, an animator But Faith’s school had no electricity — let alone the technology to teach computer animation. Roux, who grew up spending her summers in Africa, had raised funds for computers to make STEAM — science, technology, engineering, arts, and math — education in Africa more accessible. The lack of electricity at Faith’s school showed another difficulty. At 16, Roux found herself in her backyard designing and building a computer lab inside a recycled shipping container. She named the creation a BloomBox Roux filled the lab with computing equipment, and then topped it with a solar roof for dependable power. In the summer of 2021, Roux took it to Faith’s high school in Blantyre, Malawi. Once introduced, the BloomBox caught the attention of the Malawi Ministry of Education. “They want everyone to be very technologically literate (通晓的) by 2063,” Roux says, “and that starts with making sure that young people have contact with technology and creative maker spaces.” The ministry agreed a plan to build 70 more labs across the country. To enlarge, however, Roux and a team of 30 professionals needed to solve problems of productivity, safety, and transportation to faraway communities. BloomBox Design Labs formed in 2023 as a public benefit company after moving all production to Malawi and South Africa to bring down costs, reduce transport time, and hire local workers. Today, Roux’s friend Faith studies art and design at the University of Malawi. When Roux finishes the 70 planned labs, they will reach 200,000 students so that their love of learning can bloom. 4. Why did the close relationship between Roux and Faith form? A. They had similar backgrounds. B. They shared a similar passion. C. They grew up in the same place. D. They aimed for the same career. 5. In what sense can a BloomBox be a solution to Faith’s school? A. It runs quickly. B. It’s easy to operate. C. It can power itself. D. It includes computers. 6. What’s the basic condition for the goal of the Ministry of Education? A. Training STEAM teachers. B. Ensuring technology access. C. Securing government funding. D. Establishing 70 BloomBoxes. 7. What’s the best title for the text? A. Big Things Bloom in Small Spaces B. A BloomBox Changes a Malawi Girl C. STEAM Education Spreads in Africa D. Small Labs Benefit the Whole Africa (★)C One day when I was 12, my mother gave me an order: I was to walk to the public library, and borrow at least one book for the summer. This was one more weapon for her to defeat my strange problem-inability read. In the library, I found my way into the “Children’s Room”. I sat down on the floor and pulled a few books off the shelf at random. The cover of a book caught my eye. It presented a picture of a beagle (小猎犬). I had recently had a beagle, the first and only animal friend I ever had as a child. He was my secret sharer, but one morning, he was gone, given away to someone who had the space and the money to care for him. I never forgot my beagle. There on the book’s cover was a beagle which looked identical (相同的) to my dog. I ran my fingers over the picture of the dog on the cover. My eyes ran across the title, Amos, the Beagle with a Plan. Unknowingly, I had read the title. Without opening the book, I borrowed it from the library for the summer. Under the shade of a bush, I started to read about Amos. I read very, very slowly with difficulty. Though pages were turned slowly, I got the main idea of the story, about a dog who, like mine, had been separated from his family and who finally found his way back home. That dog was my dog, and I was the little boy in the book. At the end of the story, my mind continued the final scene of reunion, on and on until my lost dog and I were, in my mind, running together. My mother’s call returned me to the real world. I suddenly realized something: I had read a book, and I had loved reading that book. Everyone knew I could not read. But I had read it. Books could be incredibly wonderful and I was going to read them. I never told my mother about my “miraculous” (奇迹般的) experience that summer, but she saw a slow but remarkable improvement in my classroom performance during the next year. And years later, she was proud that her son had read thousands of books, was awarded a Ph.D. in literature and authored his own books, articles, poetry and fiction. The power of the words has held. 8. What did the mother order the author to do at the age of 12? A. To borrow books in the library. B. To defeat his classmates. C. To read books in the library. D. To learn to keep pets. 9. Why did the author choose the book of the Beagle? A. Because it was a story of his beagle. B. Because it presented a picture of a beagle. C. Because he could read the book without difficulties. D. Because the beagle on the cover looked the same as his dog. 10. What can be inferred from paragraph 4? A. This book’s hero is the author. B. The author missed his beagle very much. C. The author and his beagle will run together. D. The author’s dog returned to the owner’s family. 11. What does the author want to tell us in the end? A. He is proud of his dog. B. He has owned thousands of books. C. We can never ignore the charm of a book. D. We should care more about animals forever. D Port disruptions (中断) are costly, very costly. While the 2011 Tohoku tsunami caused around $ 12 billion in damage, the port disruptions resulted in a huge loss in trade relying on sea transport. However. tsunamis are rarely considered in port planning or structural design. In response, a group of researchers has developed a framework (准则) to judge tsunami risk. The framework estimates potential economic losses in trade caused by port disruptions while also analyzing the following effect it would have on the global port network, including the ramifications for shipping routes and ports not directly affected by physical damage. Constance Chua, a researcher at Tohoku University, led the study. “We applied our framework to the South China Sea, focusing on a potential tsunami scene caused by an activity of the Manila Trench (马尼拉海沟),” says Chua. “We also considered tsunami conditions under future sea level rises.” In total, Chua and her colleagues evaluated 104 scenes, thanks to the help of international experts from various fields, such as Dr. Tanghua Li, a geophysicist at the Earth Observatory of Singapore who specializes in sea-level rise modeling in Asia. Each expert contributed the latest knowledge and models on different fields, ensuring a broad base of factors was considered. The study found that a Manila Trench tsunami could damage up to 11 international seaports under present-day sea-level conditions and up to 15 ports by 2100. In the most severely damaged locations, port closures (关闭) could last over 200 days. However, the length of closure did not always translate into the greatest economic loss. Ports with higher annual goods would suffer more from economic damage. The busy ports of Hong Kong, Manila, and Gaoxiong experienced the highest trade losses across all scenes. Chua says that a Manila Trench tsunami could cause greater damage to global trade than past events, such as the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and the costly 2011 Tohoku tsunami. “Since South China hosts some of the busiest ports and sea routes, the number of disrupted shipping routes would far exceed previous tsunami events. Given the lack of consideration given to tsunami impacts, our study could help prepare for such events.” 12. Why did the researchers conduct the study? A. Ports are quite important for global trade. B. Effects of Tohoku tsunami haven’t gone away. C. They want to promote global commerce. D. Tsunamis are seldom factored into port design. 13. What does the underlined word “ramifications” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Origins. B. Benefits. C. Consequences. D. Improvements. 14. What did the study find about a Manila Trench tsunami? A. Sea level rises will worsen tsunami damage. B. Affected ports will close for 200 days. C. Longer closures mean more financial loss. D. Study results are similar in most scenes. 15. Why will a Manila Trench tsunami cause larger damage to global trade? A. It will damage more ports physically. B. Affected areas matter in global trade. C. This tsunami is extremely powerful. D. The preparations aren’t sufficient. There’s a great joy in traveling and immersing (沉浸在) yourself in different cultures. On the first leg of the journey, I caught a bus to a small country town roughly halfway into the twelve-hour trip, had an hour-and-fifteen-minute break, and then got a train the rest of the way. On the bus trip, I made friends with a twenty-one-year-old lady Lucy who was six months pregnant and two women in their mid-twenties-all making the same trip. When we arrived at the country train station, we were told that we could not board for another forty-five minutes. We were advised to go to a popular takeaway place but to make sure we were back at least fifteen minutes before departure time. So, the four of us headed off to get something to eat, making sure we were back right at the time we’d been told we could board the train. However, just after we finished eating something, Lucy suddenly had a serious stomachache. She was pale and sweating. The two ladies and I immediately asked her what was wrong, but she could barely speak through the pain. I saw a sign for a medical center not too far from the takeaway place. Without hesitation, we started to support her as we made our way back towards the medical center. As we got there, we rushed her inside. The staff took her in right away, and we had to wait anxiously in the waiting room. Every passing minute made me more and more aware that our train was getting closer and closer to its departure time. After what felt like ages, a doctor told us that Lucy had some kind of stomach problem but was okay then. Then we returned to the station, only to find that the train had already left. We asked the station manager, who is a woman in her forties, to see if we could get new tickets or find out about the next available train. Unfortunately, the next train wasn’t until the following day, and there were no other practical options for getting to our destination that night. We decided to find a hotel to stay at but we didn’t have enough money, because non-members must pay a big deposit (押金). What’s worse, there was no mobile payment there. We were really very disappointed and worried. We stood outside, looking at each other with worried expressions. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ We thanked the station manager and promised to return the money as we got home. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 名校联考联合体 2025年秋季高二第一次联考(暨入学摸底考试) 英语 时量:120分钟 满分:150分 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 做题时,先将答案标在试卷上。 How much is the shirt? The main reason is that online news is more timely. With just a few clicks, I can get the latest information anytime and anywhere, which is impossible for newspapers that need printing and distribution. Besides, the Internet offers a wider range of news. I can easily access news from different fields and sources, helping me form a comprehensive view. What’s more, online news is often interactive, allowing me to read comments and share my opinions, which makes the process of getting news more engaging. That’s why I choose Internet as my main news source. Dear Editor, When it comes to getting news, I prefer to use newspapers rather than the Internet. For me, newspapers offer a more reliable and focused way to get information. The news in newspapers is usually carefully edited and verified by professional journalists, which means I can trust the accuracy of the content. Unlike the Internet, where news often comes in a flood of fragmented information, newspapers arrange articles in a clear structure, making it easier for me to read and understand important events without being distracted by pop-up ads or irrelevant links. Just then, the station manager approached us. After knowing what had happened, she said she admired our kindness and couldn’t bear to see us in such a difficult situation. She offered to lend us some money to cover the hotel expenses for the night. We were shocked and deeply touched by her generosity. We hesitated at first, not wanting to accept money from a stranger, but she insisted, saying it was the least she could do to help. So, we gratefully accepted her offer and found a simple but clean hotel nearby. We thanked the station manager and promised to return the money as we got home. She just smiled. That night, we stayed with Lucy, taking care of her and making sure she was comfortable. The next day, we finally reached our destination. I immediately sent the money back to the station manager along with a heartfelt thank-you letter. A few days later, I received a letter from her. She said that our act of helping Lucy had inspired her, and she was glad she could play a part in our journey. The experience made me realize that kindness could create a beautiful cycle and always finds a way to come back. How much is the shirt? Their relation was close over their love of art and their future dreams: Roux wanted to be an architect; Faith, an animator But Faith's school had no electricity—let alone the technology to teach computer animation. Roux, who grew up spending her summers in Africa, had raised funds for computers to make STEAM—science, technology, engineering, arts, and math— education in Africa more accessible. The lack of electricity at Faith's school showed another difficulty. At 16, Roux found herself in her backyard designing and building a 26 computer lab inside a recycled shipping container. She named the creation a BloomBox Roux filled the lab with computing equipment, and then topped it with a solar roof for dependable power. In the summer of 2021, Roux took it to Faith's high school in Blantyre, Malawi. Once introduced, the BloomBox caught the attention of the Malawi Ministry of Education. “They want everyone to be very technologically literate(通晓的) by 2063,” Roux says, “and that starts with making sure that young people have contact with technology and creative maker spaces.” The ministry agreed a plan to build 70 more labs across the country. To enlarge, however,Roux and a team of 30 professionals needed to solve problems of productivity, safety, and transportation to faraway communities. Today,, Roux's friend Faith studies art and design at the University of Malawi. This was one more weapon for her to defeat my strange problem—inability to read. In the library, I found my way into the “Children's Room”. I sat down on the floor and pulled a few books off the shelf at random. The cover of a book caught my eye. It presented a picture of a beagle(小猎犬). I had recently had a beagle, the first and only animal friend I ever had as a child. He was my secret sharer, but one morning, he was gone, given away to someone who had the space and the money to care for him. I never forgot my beagle. 32 There on the book's cover was a beagle which looked identical(相同的) to my dog. I ran my fingers over the picture of the dog on the cover. My eyes ran across the title, “Amos, the Beagle with a Plan”. My mother's call returned me to the real world. I suddenly realized something: I had read a book, and I had loved reading that book. Everyone knew I could not read. But I had read it. Books could be incredibly wonderful and I was going to read them. I never told my mother about my “miraculous”(奇迹般的) experience that summer, but she saw a slow but remarkable improvement in my classroom performance during the next year. And years later, she was proud that her son had read thousands of books, was awarded a Ph. D. in literature and authored his own books, articles, poetry and fiction. The power of the words has held. 28.What did the mother order the author to do at the age of 12?( ) A A.Borrow books in the library. B.Defeat his classmates. While the 2011 Tohoku tsunami caused around $12 billion in damage, the port disruptions resulted in a huge loss in trade relying on sea transport. However, tsunamis are rarely considered in port planning or structural design. In response, a group of researchers has developed a framework(准则) to judge tsunami risk. The framework estimates potential economic losses in trade caused by port disruptions while also analyzing the following effect it would have on the global port network, including the ramifications for shipping routes and ports not directly affected by physical damage. 41 Constance Chua, a researcher at Tohoku University, led the study. “We applied our framework to the South China Sea, focusing on a potential tsunami scene caused by an activity of the Manila Trench(马尼拉海沟),” says Chua. In the most severely damaged locations, port closures(关闭) could last over 200 days. However, the length of closure did not always translate into the greatest economic loss. Ports with higher annual goods would suffer more from economic damage. The busy ports of Hong Kong, Manila, and Gaoxiong experienced the highest trade losses across all scenes. Chua says that a Manila Trench tsunami could cause greater damage to global trade than past events, such as the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and the costly 2011 Tohoku tsunami.“Since South China hosts some of the busiest ports and sea routes, the number of disrupted shipping routes would far exceed previous tsunami events. Given the lack of consideration given to tsunami impacts, our study could help prepare for such events.” 32.Why did the researchers conduct the study?( ) D A.Ports are quite important for global trade. B.Effects of Tohoku tsunami haven't gone away. C.They want to promote global commerce. D.Tsunamis are seldom factored into port design. 44 33.What does the underlined word “ramifications” in paragraph 2 mean?( ) C A.Origins. B.Benefits. C.Consequences. D.Improvements. C。 34.What did the study find about a Manila Trench tsunami?( ) A A.Sea level rises will worsen tsunami damage. B.Affected ports will close for 200 days. C.Longer closures mean more financial loss. D.Study results are similar in most scenes. 根据第三段中的“We also considered tsunami conditions under future sea level rises.(我们还考虑了未来海平面上升下的海啸情景。)”可知,该研究 将海平面上升作为分析因素;根据第四段中的“The study found that a Manila Trench tsunami could damage up to 11 international seaports under present-day sea-level conditions and up to 15 ports by 2100.(研究发现,在现今海平面条件下,马尼拉海沟 海啸可破坏多达11个国际海港;到2100年,这一数字将增至15个港口。)” 故选A。 46 35.Why will a Manila Trench tsunami cause larger damage to global trade?( ) B A.It will damage more ports physically. B.Affected areas matter in global trade. C.This tsunami is extremely powerful. D.The preparations aren't sufficient. There's a great joy in traveling and immersing(沉浸在) yourself in different cultures. On the first leg of the journey, I caught a bus to a small country town roughly halfway into the twelve-hour trip, had an hour-and-fifteen-minute break, and then got a train the rest of the way. On the bus trip, I made friends with a twenty-one-year-old lady Lucy who was six months pregnant and two women in their mid-twenties—all making the same trip. When we arrived at the country train station, we were told that we could not board for another forty-five minutes. We were advised to go to a popular takeaway place but 82 to make sure we were back at least fifteen minutes before departure time. So, the four of us headed off to get something to eat, making sure we were back right at the time we'd been told we could board the train. Unfortunately, the next train wasn't until the following day, and there were no other practical options for getting to our destination that night. We decided to find a hotel to stay at but we didn't have enough money, because non-members must pay a big deposit(押金). What's worse, there was no mobile payment there. We were really very disappointed and worried. We stood outside, looking at each other with worried expressions._____________________________ We thanked the station manager and promised to return the money as we got home._____________________________ 炎德·英才·名校联考联合体2025年秋季高二第一次联考(暨入学摸底考试) 英 语 【参考范文】 We stood outside, looking at each other with worried expressions. Just then, the station manager approached us. After knowing what had happened, she said she admired our kindness and couldn't bear to see us in such a difficult situation. That night, we stayed with Lucy, taking care of her and 86 making sure she was comfortable. The next day, we finally reached our destination. In the library,I found my way into the "Children's Room".I sat down on the floor and pulled a few books off the shelf at random. The cover of a book caught my eye.It presented a picturc of a beagle().I had recently had a beaglc, the first and only animal friend I ever had as a child. He was my secret sharer, but one morning,he was gone, given away to someone who had the space and the money to care for him.I never forgot my beagle There on the book's cover was a beagle which looked identical(to my dog.I ran my fingers over the picture of the dog on the cover. My eyes ran across the title,"Amos, the Beagle with a Plan".Unknowingly,I had read the title.Without opening the book,I borrowed it from the library for the summer. Under the shade of a bush,I started to read about Amos.I read very, very slowly with difficulty.Though pages were turned slowly,I got the main idea of the story, about a dog who, like mine, had been separated from his family and who finally found his way back home. That dog was my dog,and I was the little boy in the book.At the end of the story, my mind continued the final scene of reunion,on and on until my lost dog and I were,in my mind, running together. My mother's call returned me to the real world.I suddenly realized something:I had read a book, and I had loved reading that book.Everyone knew I could not read. But I had read it.Books could be incredibly wonderful and I was going to read them. I never told my mother about my“miraculous”(奇迹般的)experience that summer, but she saw a slow but remarkable improvement in my classroom performance during the next year. And years later, she was proud that her son had read thousands of books, was awarded a Ph.D.in literature and authored his own books, articles, poetry and fiction. The power of the words has held. 28.What did the mother order the author to do at the age of 12? D Port disruptions()are costly, very costly. While the 2011 Tohoku tsunami caused around 12 billion in damage, the port disruptions resulted in a huge loss in trade relying on sea transport. However.tsunamis are rarely considered in port planning or structural design. In response,a group of rescarchers has developed a framework()to judge tsunami risk. The framework estimates potential economic losses in trade caused by port disruptions while also analyzing the following effect it would have on the global port nctwork, including the ramifications for shipping routes and ports not directly affected by physical damage. Constance Chua,a researcher at Tohoku University, led the study."We applied our framework to the South China Sea,focusing on a potential tsunami scene caused by an activity of the Manila Trench(马尼拉海沟),”says Chua.“We also considered tsunami conditions under future sea level rises."In total,Chua and her colleagues evaluated 104 scenes, thanks to the help of international experts from various fields, such as Dr.Tanghua Li,a geophysicist at the Earth Observatory of Singapore who specializes in sea-level rise modeling in Asia. Each expert contributed the latest knowledge and models on different fields, ensuring a broad base of factors was considered. The study found that a Manila Trench tsunami could damage up to 11 international seaports under present-day sea-level conditions and up to 15 ports by 2100.In the most severely damaged locations, port closures()could last over 200 days. However, the length of closure did not always translate into the greatest economic loss.Ports with higher annual goods would suffer more from economic damage. "Since South China hosts some of the busiest ports and sea routes, the number of disrupted shipping routes would far exceed previous tsunami events.Given the lack of consideration given to tsunami impacts, our study could help prepare for such events. 32.Why did the researchers conduct the study? A.Ports arc quite important for global trade. B.Effects of Tohoku tsunami haven't gone away. C.They want to promote global commerce. D.Tsunamis are seldom factored into port design. 高二英语试题第6页(共10页) 33.What does the underlined word "ramifications"in paragraph 2 mean? A.Origins. B.Benefits. C.Consequences. C.Longer closures mean more financial loss. D.Study results are similar in most scenes. 35.Why will a Manila Trench tsunami cause larger damage to global trade? A.It will damage more ports physically B.Affected areas matter in global trade. C.This tsunami is extremely powerful. D.The preparations aren't sufficient.
