Lesson Plan: Writing About My Best Friend
Level: Grade 8
Time: 40 minutes
Topic: Descriptive Writing – My Best Friend
Objective: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to write a short article describing their best friend using appropriate vocabulary and structure.
Materials:
Projector or printed copies of the model essay and vocabulary lists
Student notebooks and pens
Whiteboard or blackboard
Lesson Procedure:
1. Warmup (5 minutes)
Ask students: “What makes someone a good friend?”
Encourage short answers like: kind, helpful, funny, honest, etc.
Introduce the topic: Today we will write about our best friends.
2. Reading a Model Text (10 minutes)
Show the model essay: “My best friend” (from the second image).
Read the essay aloud together.
Highlight the structure:
Introduction: Who the friend is and where/when they met.
Main body: Physical appearance and personality qualities.
Conclusion: How the writer feels about the friend.
3. Vocabulary Building (10 minutes)
Present vocabulary from the “Words about people” and “Useful expressions” sections.
Practice describing people using:
Face: round, square, small
Eyes: bright, smiling, big
Hair: long, short, dark brown
Character: helpful, patient, cheerful, trustworthy
4. Guided Practice: Answer Questions (5 minutes)
Refer to the questions from the first image (Part D1):
1. What is his/her name?
2. When and where did you first meet?
3. What does he/she look like?
4. What are his/her best qualities?
5. How do you feel about your best friend?
Have students jot down brief answers.
5. Writing Task (10 minutes)
Instruct students to write their own article: “My best friend”
Remind them to use:
Introduction + Main body + Conclusion
Vocabulary from the lesson
Sentences like: “I first met…”, “She/He is…”, “Every time I…”
6. Sharing and Feedback (5 minutes)
Ask a few volunteers to read their articles.
Give positive feedback and gentle corrections if needed.
7. Wrapup (5 minutes)
Review the structure and useful phrases.
Assign homework: Finish writing and proofread the article.
Extension Activity:
Students can draw a picture of their best friend and label it with descriptive words.
