“During the last 15 km, I felt faint and my face and hands were dead,” recalled Miao Hao, China’s first professional triathlete (参加三项全能赛的运动员). Exhausted at the last 200m at the IRONMAN Hamburg European Championship held in Germany on June 2, Miao collapsed near the finish line, crawling his way across it.
As a super tough race with multiple sports, the Ironman Triathlon includes a 3.8 km swim, a 180 km bike ride and a 42.195 km marathon. Being a former military triathlete, Miao represented the national team before retiring in 2018. The government offered him a job as a civil servant. But Miao chose to pursue a career as a professional triathlete, giving up the stability of the former.
Going from a national team athlete to a professional has presented significant challenges for Miao. “In the national team, I had comprehensive support and was merely an athlete. Now, I am also a husband and a father, shouldering family responsibilities like dropping my son off at primary school before starting my training,” he noted. Miao also faces financial pressure due to managing his own coaching, physiotherapists, nutritionists and support staff.
As the first professional triathlete in China, Miao is exploring future options for professional athletes. In addition to training, Miao shares his training and competition experiences through social media to attract more people to understand and participate in triathlon. At the same time, he regularly communicates with various sports clubs to introduce the charm of triathlon. “To boost triathlon in China and prepare for future Olympics, we need teamwork from various sectors, including more youth training and business sponsorship,” he said. “I hope more Chinese triathletes will compete in the Olympics and stand on more stages,” said Miao.

The inspiration for Michigan Words came from a desire to make poetry a shared experience — accessible and visible to all Michiganders. Poetry often lives in books, workshops, or private spaces, but I wanted to bring it into public life in a way that invited community participation and reflection. I wanted the poets and their neighbors to feel pride in seeing words written by living people in their community on billboards, big and towering above our landscapes. The billboards are great for this goal because they show language in everyday life. They fit into daily trips and ordinary routines, but they are also eye-catching enough to make people stop and think.
Working collaboratively with the poets to design each billboard was one of the most rewarding aspects of the project. We held brainstorming sessions and discussed each design element together to ensure that the poets’ visions were fully realized. I selected poets who truly represent Michigan’s geographic and cultural diversity. Brittany Rogers from Detroit, Jonah Mixon-Webster from Flint, and M. Bartley Seigel from Houghton are three powerhouse poets from three very different regions whose work resonates (共鸣) with communities across the state. I worked with the Library of Michigan to create a universal design, but I wanted the authors to have full control over the work they shared. The poets did a wonderful job.
When deciding where to locate the billboards, I wanted each location to have balanced visibility. This careful placement ensured that the lines of poetry would be seen and felt as part of their environment.
I am happy to see the impact of this project. Recently, M. Bartley Seigel shared how much the project affected him personally, saying, “I think my mom has been more excited about the billboard than a lot of other sort of poetry accomplishments that I’ve had in my life.”
I hope Michigan Words connects people and regions, and brings poets and passers-by together. It celebrates Michigan’s voices and shows that poetry, like our shared landscapes, is everywhere, waiting to be noticed and accepted.
8. What was the main inspiration for the Michigan Words project?
A. To create a new form of public art. B. To promote the careers of local poets.
C. To make Michigan famous for its poetry. D. To bring poetry within reach of Michiganders.
9. What does the underlined word “collaboratively” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Cooperatively B. Secretly. C. Competitively D. Constantly.
10. Why did the author mention M. Bartley Seigel’s words?
A. To promote M. Bartley Seigel’s poetry.
B. To emphasize the visibility of the billboards.
C. To show the author’s involvement in the project.
D. To illustrate the impact of the project on the poets involved.
11. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. The History of Michigan Poetry B. The Role of Billboards in Advertising
C. Michigan Words: Poetry in Public Spaces D. Poets: a Vital Resource for City Connection
【答案】8. D 9. A 10. D 11. C

Young loggerhead sea turtles (红海龟) perform a special dance when they sense food, and researchers have used this behavior to study whether these turtles can recognize specific magnetic fields (磁场) linked to past feeding locations. The findings, published in Nature, suggest that loggerheads can learn the magnetic signatures of certain places, creating a mental magnetic map.
Sea turtles are known for their long journeys, traveling thousands of miles while maintaining a strong sense of direction. They often return to the same feeding grounds and nesting beaches. Scientists have long known that sea turtles use Earth’s magnetic field to find their way, but traveling precisely to specific locations requires more than just directional awareness. It involves knowing exact coordinates (坐标).
To put the idea that they can create a mental magnetic map of important locations to the test, Goforth and her workmates collected several loggerhead hatchlings on an island off North Carolina. The turtles were returned to the wild the following summer.
In the lab, young loggerhead sea turtles were put in containers connected to a magnetic system. When an electric current was sent through the system, it created a magnetic field inside the containers. The scientists adjusted these fields to match the magnetic conditions of different places along the East Coast, like areas in the Gulf of Mexico or along the coast of Maine. Each turtle was exposed to two distinct magnetic fields. Over a two-month conditioning period, the turtles spent equal amounts of time in each field — but were only fed in one of them. Then, during experimental trials over several days, the team re-created the two magnetic fields but did not feed the turtles.
The scientists discovered that, even with no food actually present, the sea turtles displayed their dancing behavior when they encountered the magnetic conditions that were associated with past feedings. This supports the idea that these animals can learn the magnetic coordinates of feeding locations.
12. What is the main purpose of the experiment conducted by Goforth and her workmates?
A. To study the feeding habits of loggerhead sea turtles.
B. To observe the traveling patterns of loggerhead sea turtles.
C. To see if loggerhead sea turtles can make a mental magnetic map.
D. To understand how loggerhead sea turtles use Earth’s magnetic field.
13. What did the researchers do to young loggerhead sea turtles in the lab?
A. They fed them only in one of two distinct magnetic fields.
B. They taught them to dance in response to magnetic fields.
C. They exposed them to magnetic fields from all over the world.
D. They observed their nesting behavior in different magnetic fields.
14. What does the sea turtles’ dancing behavior in the absence of food suggest?
A. The turtles were confused by the magnetic fields.
B. The turtles were just reacting to the magnetic system.
C. The turtles were trying to escape from the containers.
D. The turtles learned to link the magnetic conditions with food.
15. Where can you probably find the text?
A. In a travel guide. B. In a scientific journal.
C. In a story book. D. In a cooking magazine.
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. D 15. B

【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“The scientists discovered that, even with no food actually present, the sea turtles displayed their dancing behavior when they encountered the magnetic conditions that were associated with past feedings. This supports the idea that these animals can learn the magnetic coordinates of feeding locations.(科学家们发现,即便实际上并没有食物存在,海龟在遇到与以往进食地点相关的磁场条件时,也会表现出这种舞蹈行为。这支持了这样的观点,即这些动物能够掌握进食地点的磁场坐标)”可知,在没有食物的情况下,海龟的这种舞蹈行为表明了这些海龟学会了将磁场状况与食物联系起来。故选D。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“Young loggerhead sea turtles (红海龟) perform a special dance when they sense food, and researchers have used this behavior to study whether these turtles can recognize specific magnetic fields (磁场) linked to past feeding locations. 第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The school sports meeting was in full swing. The most anticipated event, the 4x100-meter relay race, was about to start. Tim, a passionate and athletic student, was part of his class’s relay team. Along with his teammates—Mark, Jack and Alex, he had trained intensively for weeks, nurturing high hopes of winning the gold medal.
The atmosphere was electric as the runners took their positions. The starting gun fired, and Mark took off like a bolt of lightning, his powerful strides eating up the track. He smoothly handed the baton(接力棒)to Jack. Jack sprinted(冲刺)ahead with all his might, skillfully maintaining their lead. Then, it was Tim’s turn. As Jack approached at top speed, Tim reached out eagerly for the baton. But in his over-enthusiasm, he miscalculated the distance, and to his horror, the baton dropped to the ground. Time seemed to stand still as Tim stared at the baton, his heart pounding.
He quickly snatched it up and dashed forward, but the precious seconds lost had put them behind the other teams. Alex did his absolute best in the final leg, pushing himself to the limit, but they ultimately crossed the finish line in fourth place, narrowly missing out on the medals.
The disappointment on the team’s faces was obvious. Tim felt as if a heavy weight had settled on his shoulders. He couldn’t bring himself to look at his teammates, consumed by guilt. He replayed the moment of the dropped baton over and over in his mind, each time wishing he could turn back the clock. Mark, usually the most talkative, was silent, his eyes downcast(低垂的). Jack shook his head in frustration, muttering something under his breath. Alex just looked at the ground, his shoulders low. Without a word, they started walking back to the changing room, leaving Tim alone on the track, filled with self-blame.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Tim knew his mistake had cost the team dearly.

Just then, Mark Jack, and Alex appeared.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Tim knew his mistake had cost the team dearly. He couldn’t help but blame himself for the failure. As he sat on the edge of the track, tears of frustration welled up in his eyes. He thought about all the hard work and dedication they had put into training, and how it had all seemed to be in vain because of his one moment of carelessness. He wondered if his teammates would ever forgive him, and if he would ever be able to make up for what he had done.
Just then, Mark, Jack, and Alex appeared. They walked up to Tim and sat down beside him. Mark placed a comforting hand on Tim’s shoulder and said, “Hey, it’s not your fault. These things happen. We’re a team, and we all make mistakes.” Jack nodded in agreement, adding, “We didn’t lose because of you. We lost because we didn’t work together well enough in that moment. Let’s learn from this and come back stronger next time.” Alex smiled and patted Tim on the back, saying, “We’re still proud of you, and we know you’ll do better next time. We’re in this together.”
【解析】

4. What did Miao do to become a professional triathlete?
A. Retire from the military.
B. Train independently in Germany.
C. Reject a stable government job.
D. Start youth training programs.
5. What’s Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Miao’s different identities and responsibilities.
B. Miao’s pains during independent training.
C. Miao’s pressure of criticisms from his family.
D. Miao’s hardships of public opinion and expectations.
6. How does Miao promote triathlon in China?
A. By setting up the business sponsorship for athletes.
B. By asking clubs to promote the charm of triathlon.
C. By telling his stories to arouse people’s interest in triathlon.
D. By establishing youth teams and training younger athletes.
7. Which of the following words can best describe Miao?
A. Determined and hard - working.
B Friendly and innovative.
C. Ambitious and enthusiastic.
D. Thoughtful and knowledgeable.

A To study the feeding habits of loggerhead sea turtles.
