As the curtain on the stage falls slowly, Lincoln Center bursts into thunderous applause. Chinese ballet dancer Chen Zhenwei once again impresses the audience from all over the world with his wonderful performance.
“It’s incredible. I never thought my dream would come true so soon,” Chen said, recalling the scene when he got the news in May 2022 that he was promoted to the principal (首席) dancer of the New York City Ballet (NYCB), the company’s first Chinese and fourth Asian principal dancer in 74 years.
Founded by George Balanchine, the father of US ballet, NYCB is one of the leading ballet companies in the world, with 95 percent of the company’s dancers coming from the School of American Ballet, and only 5 percent selected from top dancers around the world.
To stand out from the top dancers, Chen has made every effort. “Whether you can become a principal or not depends on many factors. You need excellent physical condition, good teachers, strong support from family, continuous practice, good luck and opportunity, as well as a healthy body. All of these are too important to be without,” he said.
Born in Huizhou, Guangdong Province in 1992, Chen became attached to dance as a child. However, his parents preferred that he become a doctor or a lawyer in the future. The boy then wrote a seven-page letter to his parents describing his determination to study dance. Thanks to the sincere letter, Chen finally gained the support of his family and started his dream-seeking journey.
Chen, with a Chinese cultural background, is also trying hard to promote Chinese culture on the Western ballet stage. Liang Zhu, a ballet adaptation of an ancient Chinese legend designed by him, was performed at Lincoln Center in New York. “This is a love story from China. I hope that US audiences can enjoy our wonderful Chinese culture,” Chen said.

Ask a classroom of children to draw a scientist, and you’ll see plenty of colored lab coats and glasses. The image ( 画像) hasn't changed much since the 1960s, but the person wearing the lab coat is changing.
A new analysis finds that more female scientists have appeared in kids? drawings in recent decades — going from nearly nonexistent in the 1960s to about a third in 2016.
The first of many “ draw-a-scientist ’’ studies asked nearly 5,000 children to draw a scientist between 1966 and 1977. Of those 5,000 drawings, only 28 drew female scientists. That was just 0.56 percent. Today, female scientists are being presented more in the media. For example, in a content analysis, 13 percent of people pictured in science feature stories of the 1960s were women or girls, compared with 44 percent in the 2000s. “That might really affect children’s idea on what a scientist should be like, ” says Miller, a Ph. D. candidate in psychology.
To look for changes in children's perception over time, the researchers conducted a meta-analysis ,combining data from 78 studies that included a total of more than 20,000 children from kindergarten to the 12th grade. On average, 28 percent of children drew female scientists in studies conducted from 1965 to 2016.
What hasn’t changed much: kids pick up stereotypes (模式化观念)by gender (性别) as they grow up. At age 6, about 70 percent of the girls in the more recent studies drew female scientists. By age 16, 75 percent drew male scientists. This is an important period in which kids are learning stereotypes. It’s important that teachers and parents present diverse examples of both male and female scientists.
8. What’s the picture of scientists drawn by a 1960s, kid like?
A. A man with long curly hair. B. A woman with lab glasses.
C. A woman in a formal lab suit. D. A man in a colored lab coat.
9. What may contribute to the changes in kids’ drawings?
A. The improvement of women^ social status.
B. The kids are affected by teachers and parents.
C. More female scientists appear in the media.
D. The increasing number of female scientists.
10. What does the underlined word “ perception” in Paragraph 4 most probably mean?
A. Belief. B. Idea. C. Habit. D. Growth.
11. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that .
A. it's a stereotype that scientists are generally males
B. girls are more influenced by stereotypes than boys
C. some children are born with certain stereotypes
D. most children tend to prefer female scientists
【答案】8. D 9. C 10. B 11. A

【8题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段的“Ask a classroom of children to draw a scientist, and you’ll see plenty of colored lab coats and glasses. (让一群孩子画一个科学家,你会看到很多彩色的实验服和眼镜。)”和第二段的“A new analysis finds that more female scientists have appeared in kids? drawings in recent decades — going from nearly nonexistent in the 1960s to about a third in 2016.(一项新的分析发现,近几十年来,越来越多的女性科学家出现在儿童绘画中——从20世纪60年代的几乎不存在,到2016年的约三分之一。)”可知,在60年代孩子画的科学家图画里没有女性,是一个穿着彩色实验服的男人。故选D。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段的“Today, female scientists are being presented more in the media.(如今,女性科学家更多地出现在媒体上。)”和““That might really affect children’s idea on what a scientist should be like, ” says Miller, a Ph. D. candidate in psychology.(“这可能真的会影响孩子们对科学家应该是什么样的想法,”心理学博士候选人米勒说。)”可知,更多的女性科学家出现在媒体上可能会导致孩子绘画的变化,故选C。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段的“That might really affect children’s idea on what a scientist should be like, (这可能真的会影响孩子们对科学家应该是什么样的想法)”,第四段的“the researchers conducted a meta-analysis ,combining data from 78 studies that included a total of more than 20,000 children from kindergarten to the 12th grade.(研究人员进行了荟萃分析,综合了78项研究的数据,包括从幼儿园到12年级的总共2万多名儿童。)”可知,研究者做研究是为了了解孩子对科学家的想法,因此划线词perception的意思是“想法”,即idea,故选B。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段的“What hasn’t changed much: kids pick up stereotypes (模式化观念)by gender (性别) as they grow up. At age 6, about 70 percent of the girls in the more recent studies drew female scientists. Recycling plastic has always been a stop-start effort, and the wide variety of plastics we produce, the pollution from waste, and other limitations make recycling an economic(经济) problem. It’s estimated(估计)only 9% of plastic ever created has been recycled. But with the help of a chemical process, Canadian Miranda Wang and her company BioCellection want to change that.
Stability is one of plastic greatest qualities and downside. There's limited evidence that some plastics can biodegrade (生物降解)but largely photo-plastics degrade in the sun. It’s a long process, and the truth is that we can only estimate how long it takes. Wang is looking to break the inaction and BioCellection's task is to make most plastic waste recyclable.
She outlines two current methods. One is to take plastics like water bottles, wash them, cut them, melt and reconstitute them. “That's a very limited process” she says, due to the requirement that plastics be “clean” . The other, which can handle dirtier plastics and a level of pollution, is called hydrolysis(热解). Intense heat is applied to break down plastics so they can be reused as oils for energy, but “it’s not economical,’’ she says.
BioCellection’s solution builds on research from over ten years ago, Wang explains, when a US study discovered pure polyethylene powder (聚乙烯粉)could be broken down by a catalyst (催化剂). Wang and her co-founder Jean hit upon a bacterium being able to eat plastic. In the years since, they engineered a comparable catalyst capable of doing the same job, only faster, which even works on plastics no one else can recycle at present. “We have now found a catalyst that is much cheaper than the one that was used before, Wang says.
Currently focusing on plastic films like shopping hags, the three-hour process breaks clown plastic into chemicals that can act as the building blocks for more complex plastic products.
“Right now we’re able to achieve about 70% transformation from plastic waste material to these chemicals,” she adds, saying they’re working to increase that figure.
12. Why has so little plastic been recycled?
A. Plastic is chemically stable. B. Recycling plastic led to pollution.
C. We produced various plastics. D. Most photo-plastics degrade in the sun.
13. What does Wang think of the two current methods?
A. Highly effective and dynamic. B. Expensive and pollution-causing.
C. Limited and energy-consuming. D. Widely used and recognized.
14. What did BioCellection find effective to recycle plastics?
A. Polyethylene powder. B. Chemical products.
C. Plastic films. D. A catalyst.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. Miranda Wang and her company. B. A new plastic recycling method.
C. The greatest downside of plastic. D. Transformation of plastic waste.
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. D 15. B

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Tom was working in a big company. He had been on the road visiting people for more than a month without going home. He couldn’t wait to get back to see his wife and children. It was coming up on Mother’s Day, and he usually tried to make it “back home”, but this year he was just too busy and too tired. The day when he was driving in a small town, he saw a flower shop. He said to himself, “I know what I will do. I’ll send my mother some roses.”
He stopped and went into the flower shop and saw a young boy talking to the girl in it. “How many roses can I get for five dollars, Ms.?” the boy asked. The girl was trying to explain that roses were expensive. Maybe the young boy would be happy with something else.
“No, I have to have roses,” he said, “My mum was badly sick last year and there isn’t much time left for her. I want to get something special. It has to be red roses, because that is her favorite.” He was stubborn.
The girl in the shop looked up at Tom and was just shaking her head. Something inside of Tom was touched by the boy’s voice. He wanted to get those roses so badly. Tom had been blessed in his business, and he looked at the girl and silently said that he would pay for the boy’s roses.
The girl looked at the young man and said, “OK, I will give you a dozen red roses for your dollars.” The young boy almost jumped into the air. He took the flowers and ran down the store. It was worth more than fifty dollars just to see that kind of excitement.
Tom ordered his own flowers and asked the girl to have it delivered to his mother. After that, with a relief he drove down the road. Not long after his driving, he saw the boy walking to a hospital nearby.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Tom stopped his car and followed the young boy. The moment Tom went into the hospital room, he saw a woman lying on the bed unconscious. The boy held the flowers tightly and sobbed, “Dear mum, I love you. I bring your favorite roses. But now how I regret I didn’t tell you I love you so much. ”Tom came up and patted the boy on his shoulder, saying that his company and love is the best gift. But he suddenly realized that he hadn’t visited his mum for a long time. The burden of guilt weighed on his mind.
Tom went into the car with a deep sense of shame. His mother’s home wasn’t far from here, but he hadn’t seen her for too long a time. He didn’t have a talk and say how much he loved her for so long a time. Reflecting on what he had planned, Tom felt a flush of shame burning his face. He turned the car and drove towards the road quickly to the flower shop. He asked the girl to give back the flowers because he wanted to send them personally to his mum. He could hardly wait to knock at the door and give a warm hug to his Mum.

4. Which word can replace the underlined word “incredible” in paragraph 2?
A. Strange. B. Alarming. C. Harmonious. D. Unbelievable.

6. What can be used to describe Chen?
A. Generous. B. Imaginative. C. Determined. D. Bold.
7. What does the last paragraph focus on?
A. Chen’s decision to be a ballet dancer. B. Chen’s parents’ expectations of him.
C. Chen’s efforts to spread Chinese culture. D. A famous story in ancient China.

D
