In the story Snow White, the queen decides to kill Snow White forever with an apple filled with deadly poisons (毒药). Thanks to seven helpful small men and a handsome prince, Snow White gets well again, and everyone lives happily ever after.
But the queen didn’t need to go to all that trouble. In fact, apples and many common fruits we eat are already poisonous (有毒的)! But don’t be afraid. The yummy part won’t harm you. It’s only the seeds you need to avoid.
The apple tree belongs to a plant family called Rosaceae (蔷薇科). This group also includes peaches, plums and cherries. There is a chemical (化学物质) called amygdalin (苦杏仁苷) in the seeds of all these fruits. Inside an animal’s stomach, amygdalin turns into cyanide which can make people and animals very sick, or even kill them.
Still, don’t worry if you eat a few apple seeds by accident. Each seed has only a very small amount of poison. You’d have to eat plenty of seeds to feel any effect. And you’d need to chew (咀嚼) them well—the hard, shiny shells of apple seeds keep the poison locked inside. Unchewed seeds usually pass right through and come out whole in your poop. But cows and other animals often chew up seeds with the fruit, so they can get sick.
Why would trees make poisonous seeds? To make themselves safe! Amygdalin tastes terrible. It’s also found in leaves and other parts of fruit trees. If a deer or a cow chews on apple leaves, it gets a terrible taste and an upset stomach. Animals soon learn to leave those trees alone.
Thanks, amygdalin!
Mirror mirror, on the wall, who’s the cleverest fruit of all?
You, my apple!
28. How does the writer lead into the topic of this passage?
A. By asking a question. B. By giving an opinion. C. By telling a story. D. By giving an example.
29. The underlined word in Paragraph 3 “cyanide” is a kind of ________.
A. hard seeds B. harmful chemicals C. common fruits D. terrible tastes
30. What can you infer from this passage?
A. The peach tree is a part of a plant group called Rosaceae.
B. If people eat some apple seeds accidentally, they should go to hospital at once.
C. Eating too many apples with seeds inside may not be good for animals.
D. Cows and other animals don’t eat apple leaves because of their terrible taste.
31. What might be the best title for this passage?
A. Are You My Apple? B. The Plant Protection C. Are Plants Poisonous? D. The Poisonous Apple
【答案】28. C 29. B 30. C 31. D

【29题详解】
词句猜测题。根据“Inside an animal’s stomach, amygdalin turns into cyanide which can make people and animals very sick, or even kill them.”可知,苦杏仁苷在动物胃里会变成氰化物,使人或动物生病甚至死亡,所以“cyanide”是一种有害的化学物质。故选B。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据“The apple tree belongs to a plant family called Rosaceae (蔷薇科). This group also includes peaches, plums and cherries. There is a chemical (化学物质) called amygdalin (苦杏仁苷) in the seeds of all these fruits. Inside an animal’s stomach, amygdalin turns into cyanide which can make people and animals very sick, or even kill them.”以及“But cows and other animals often chew up seeds with the fruit, so they can get sick.”

During my fall, I must have hit my head against a rock along the side of the wall, for I lost consciousness (意识), and don’t remember landing. Finally, I woke up and found myself lying on blankets. A moment later, my uncle’s face appeared over mine.
“You’re alive! You’re alive!” he shouted.
“Yes, uncle,” I said weakly.
He took me into his arms, and cried out with joy, “Oh! You don’t know how worried I was, my boy! I thought we’d lost you!”
Just then Hans came into view. He was smiling, and said in broken English, “Good day.”
“Good day to you too, Hans,” I managed to say, then turning back to my uncle, “Where are we?”
“Don’t worry about that now, Axel. First you must rest, and tomorrow I’ll tell you everything there is to tell. Rest now, my boy.”
“At least tell me the time and day, uncle.”
“It is the 8th of August and ten in the evening. Now sleep.”
And, indeed, sleep I did; for from what my uncle had just told me, I found that I had been lost for four whole days!
When I woke up the next morning, I found I was alone in the room. There were no lanterns there, and yet, somehow, I was not in total darkness. Strange and mysterious light was coming from several passages on the other side of the room. In addition to the light, there was a sound. It was like waves hitting against the beach. And I was sure I could hear wind, as well. Was I imagining all this? Was I still dreaming? No! I was most certainly awake! But how could this be?
Had we reached the earth’s surface again? Was our journey over?
Just then, my uncle entered the room.
“Ah! You’re awake, I see! Feeling better?”
“Yes, uncle. Much better.”
He fell to preparing breakfast for me at once. As he did so, I asked him a thousand questions, and soon learned that I had fallen from a great height. The only reason that I was alive was that I got involved in a big pile of falling rocks, which made me fall more slowly. Still, I was very lucky to get through that, for even the smallest of those rocks could have crushed (压碎) me.
“A true miracle (奇迹), Axel?” said my uncle. “We’ll have to be more careful in the future.”
“You mean our journey is not over?” I asked.
“Not at all! Why should you think so?”

① An old saying used for forecasting (预报) the weather goes, “Red sky at nightfall, sailors’ delight. Red sky in the morning, sailors take warning.” Is the saying true? It turns out that it is.
② A red sky at sunset may mean there are clear skies to the west, where the sun sets. A red sky at sunrise usually means that the clear weather has already passed, so storms might be coming.
③ Forecasting the weather has been practiced for thousands of years. In the 5th century BC, the Greeks sent out forecasts to sailors. They used signs in nature to forecast the weather. But today, meteorologists (气象学家) send exact forecasts further in advance. They use scientific instruments to study weather conditions around the world and make forecasts.
④ _______ Pilots farmers and many other people depend on these forecasts. Luckily, most of us can simply look on the smartphone or turn on the TV to find out what kind of weather is coming.
⑤ If you are looking for some signs of the weather, pay attention to nature. There are two basic rules used in weather forecasting: weather generally moves from west to east, and low air pressure usually means rain or snow.
⑥ Nature offers many clues (线索) for us to predict the weather. For example, if rainbows form in the west at sunrise, the sun is on the way. Smell the flowers-their smells are stronger in wet air. What are the ants doing? Are they moving to higher ground? This could mean a drop in air pressure. Are the birds flying low or high? Falling air pressure may influence birds’ ears, so they fly low. And if the sky is red at sunset, you might plan a picnic for the next day!

第 II 卷(共60分)
Ⅲ.任务型阅读。(65-67小题,每小题2分,68小题3分,共9分)
阅读下文并回答问题。
I have always loved reading books. For a very long time, I thought that “new” books were better than “old” ones. I used to look at Douban Bestseller (畅销书) List in my free time every week so that I could choose some new books to read and be “up to date” with “modern” writers.
However, I realize “new” doesn’t always mean “good”. I haven’t read a “new” book or looked at Douban Bestseller List for a long time. Instead, I prefer the books that were written hundreds or even thousands of years ago. For example, I enjoy reading Four Books and Five Classics which were written before the Qin Dynasty. These books are proved (证明) to have long-lasting value. In the past, nobody would be considered well-educated unless they could memorize these classics. Even today, students are encouraged to read The Analects (《论语》) at school.
There are also newer classics, such as The Dream of the Red Chamber (《红楼梦》) and The Outlaws of the Marsh (《水浒传》), which are both treasures of Chinese literature. They not only hold important positions in the history of Chinese literature but also have a great influence on world literature, continuing to be widely read and studied now.
Besides the classics of Chinese literature, I also like Western classics. I have read The Iliad (《伊利亚特》) by the Greek poet Homer, which was written almost three thousand years ago and shows us all the good and bad qualities of human nature—we could be brave and foolish at the same time. This is also valuable information that can serve as a warning to us nowadays.
Whether you like Chinese classics or Western classics, get a classic and start reading now.
45. Did the writer use to love reading new books in his free time?
________________________________________________________________________
46. What kind of books does the writer prefer to read now?
________________________________________________________________________
47. What are the common features (特征) of the classics mentioned in this passage?
________________________________________________________________________
48. Do you agree with the writer that ancient classics have more value than new books? Why or why not? (about 30 words)
_________________________________________________________________________
【答案】45. Yes, he did.
46. He prefers to read the books that were written hundreds or even thousands of years ago.
47. They have long-lasting value, hold important positions in the history of literature, have a great influence on world literature, and continue to be widely read and studied now.
48. Yes, I agree. Because ancient classics have stood the test of time and contain profound wisdom and values that are still relevant today./No, I don’t agree. Because new books can also provide fresh perspectives and insights, and reflect the current social and cultural context.
【解析】

开放性问题,答案不唯一,言之有理即可。故填Yes, I agree. Because ancient classics have stood the test of time and contain profound wisdom and values that are still relevant today./No, I don’t agree. Because new books can also provide fresh perspectives and insights, and reflect the current social and cultural context.

We might often say “I don’t have time”. Don’t you think it makes us feel weak and out of control every time we say “I don’t have time”? In fact, everyone can have time as long as he really wants.
First of all, ask yourself “What activities really matter to me”. Maybe cooking, reading, and playing sports are all important things, but you should find out which is the most important and then deal with it first.
No matter how busy you are, there’s still enough time to do useful things if you save a little time every day. For example, you can review your notes on the subway home so that you can be familiar with what you study at school.
Then, be honest. How long do you spend on the screens every day? Are you wasting hours playing computer games or watching short videos? After knowing what stops you, you can think about whether you have more valuable things to do.
What’s more, clear planning is more important before you must do each job. Whatever you want to do, the time is now. Try to make your own calendar. Put activities like reading, doing sports and even washing clothes on your calendar. Then finish them one by one.
Remember words have power. Saying “I don’t have time” is an excuse for not wanting to do something. If you really want to read one book, you can say, “I’d love to read that book after my homework is finished!”
All these things can add up over time more than you believe! It might feel strange at first.
Slowly, you can be in control of not only your hours but also your life. It’s your own hours and your own life. They’re all you’ve got by making use of your time!

Dear Alicia,
I’m very pleased to hear about your trip to Bashu Secondary School.
To greet people, you can say “ni hao” and shake hands in formal situations, or simply wave if it’s informal. At the dinner table, use common chopsticks when taking food from shared dishes. Avoid sticking your chopsticks upright in your rice, pointing at anyone with them, or hitting your bowl. It’s polite to wait for older people to start eating first. Besides these, dress modestly and respect local traditions. Don’t worry—you’ll learn quickly once you’re here.
Hope these tips help. Have a safe journey!
Best wishes,
Li Lei

“Good day to you too Hans,” I managed to say, then turning back to my uncle, “Where are we?”
“Don’t worry about that now, Axel. First you must rest, and tomorrow I’ll tell you everything there is to tell. Rest now, my boy.”
“At least tell me the time and day, uncle.”
“It is the 8th of August, and ten in the evening.

④ _______ Pilots, farmers and many other people depend on these forecasts.

If you really want to read one book you can say, “I’d love to read that book after my homework is finished!”
All these things can add up over time more than you believe! It might feel strange at first.
Slowly, you can be in control of not only your hours but also your life. It’s your own hours and your own life. They’re all you’ve got by making use of your time!
