Starting middle school made me really nervous (紧张的), especially when my best friend, Callie, suddenly joined the popular group. It felt like she left me behind, and I was alone. On the first day, I quickly realized things were different. Callie didn’t sit with me anymore, and I found it difficult to get along with my new classmates.
At lunchtime, I ended up sitting by myself until I met three new girls—Mia, Emma, and Alexis. They were so friendly, and soon, I started feeling more peaceful around them. As the days passed, I spent more time with them, and slowly, school didn’t seem so bad.
One day, we had a great idea: we decided to start a cupcake club! Everyone would add something different to the group. I’ve always loved baking (烘焙), so I was excited to join. Together, we planned to bake cupcakes and sell them to raise money for the school. This means we wanted to collect money by selling the cupcakes.
As time went on, my confidence grew. I realized I didn’t need to be part of the “popular” group to feel happy. Even though Callie and I weren’t as close as we used to be, I was OK with that. I had found new friends who liked me for who I really was.

First of all, you do get used to (习惯) his face. The first couple of times I thought that I was never going to get used to this. And then, after about a week, I felt that it was not so bad.
Second of all, he’s a really cool boy. I mean, he’s pretty funny. Like, the teacher will say something and August will whisper(小声说) something funny to me and make me laugh. He’s also just a nice kid. He’s easy to hang out with and talk to.
Third of all, he’s really smart. I thought that he would be behind everyone because he didn’t go to school before. But in most things he does better than me. I mean, maybe not as smart as Charlotte or Ximena, but he’s up there. He also let me copy his homework once, but we both got in trouble for it after class. “The two of you got the same answers wrong on yesterday’s homework,” Ms Rubin said. I didn’t know what to say, but August lied to protect me. He said,“Oh, that’s because we did our homework together last night.” “Well, doing homework together is a good thing,” said Ms Rubin, “but you should still do it by yourselves, OK? Got it?” After we left the classroom, I said, “Thanks for doing that.” And he said,“No problem.”
Fourthly, now that I know him, I would say that I do want to be friends with August. At first, I was only friendly to him because Mr Tushman asked me to be nice and all that. But now I would choose to play with him. He laughs at all my jokes. I think that I can tell August anything. He’s a good friend. If all the classmates were lined up and that I got to choose anyone I wanted to play with, I would choose August.

On the first day, I quickly realized things were different. Callie didn’t sit with me anymore, and I found it difficult to get along with my new classmates.

1.What does the writer mean by saying the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1?
2.Why does the writer think that August is cool?
3.Why did Ms Rubin ask the two boys about their homework?
