Andrew Parker, an English inventor, artist and zoologist at the University of Oxford, thinks color is not a thing. The world’s best colors, he says, come not from pigments (颜料), but from materials arranged into crystalline nano-structures (晶体纳米结构). And Parker thinks that we will have colors far richer and more shining than the common colors that we can see today. He calls it structural color (结构色).
Structural color was first recorded in the 17th century, in some birds5 feathers, but it is only since the invention of the electron microscope (电子显微镜), in the 1930s, that we have known how it works. Structural color is completely different from pigments. Pigments absorb (吸收) light, however, structural color reflects light into special wavelengths. The results are lively, often shining.
Parker has been working for over twenty years on a method to reproduce these nano-structures in a lab, to produce the most amazing nature’s colors. “The brightest colors,” says Parker, are being produced from completely transparent (透明的) materials. He decided to reproduce some colors to prove his idea.
Parker has now found a way to produce large numbers of what he calls “Pure Structural Color”. Deep oranges can remain their advantage in the sun; blues and purples also have their brightness. Parker calls them the brightest colors in the world, and he keeps all the details. In this way, others can not say that the exact method is not found in nature.
Next, Parker hopes to make use of the way butterflies shine gold and silver to make special paints, and to learn from the cuttlefish (墨鱼) how to make objects change colors. Parker sees a future that structural color will be used instead of pigments.
18.What makes people know how structural color works?
A.The development of some modern labs. B.The appearance of the electron microscope.
C.The documentary about some birds leathers. D.Tie different backgrounds of structural colour.
19.What is Parker’s purpose according to Paragraph 3?
A.To keep his secret in the lab. B.To produce different materials.
C.To make the most amazing colors. D.To find the best method to spread light.
20.From paragraph 4, we can know that ________.
A.the sun plays an important role in our daily life
B.blues and purples are brighter than deep oranges
C.Parker has found the most beautiful color in nature
D.Parker keeps the details of producing structural color
21.How does Parker find the future of structural color?
A.Hopeful. B.Doubtful. C.Dangerous. D.Exciting.

Parrots are amazing birds. They are mainly green, and some of them have many colors. 26
However, many scientists say that they don’t actually speak and they just repeat what they hear. Some scientists disagree.
A scientist named Irene Pepperberg did years of experiments to prove that parrots are very intelligent and they can actually understand what people are saying. 27 She named the bird Alex. After many experiments, Irene reported that Alex didn’t just repeat what he heard, but in fact, the bird could use words creatively and answer 80% of the simple questions she asked him. 28 Other scientists don’t believe Alex’s achievements. They insist that Alex was just repeating the answers as he was taught to do. In other words, Alex just performed by memorizing rather than using language.
Whatever scientists say, many people like to keep parrots because they can “talk”. 29 Unfortunately, many parrots are being taken from the jungles of Asia and South America to be sold as pets. As a result, the number of wild parrots is reducing every year.
30 They are great to have as pets, but they are better left in the wild.
A.Parrots are smart and beautiful birds.
B.A parrot, just like any other bird, is easy to feed.
C.It is fun to say something and have a parrot repeat it.
D.What’s more, Alex could even understand what he himself said.
E.They are very pretty, but the most amazing thing is that they can talk.

44.A 45.suggestions 46.awake 47.to fall 48.before 49.Wearing 50.earlier 51.changes 52.will work 53.from
故填A。
考查句型结构“it takes sb. some time to do”,所以横线上是不定式结构作真正主语。故填to fall。
故填before。
故填will work。
故填from。

C.Parker has found the most beautiful color in nature

21.How does Parker find the future of structural color?
A.Hopeful. B.Doubtful. C.Dangerous. D.Exciting.

Long ago, Damon and Pythias, two close friends on the island of Sicily, faced a test of their friendship.
Dionysius, the king of Sicily, was cruel (残忍). He had many enemies among his people. Pythias was one of them. He planned to kill the king and free Sicily from his rule. Dionysius got the wind of it, caught Pythias and sentenced him to death.
“Do you have anything to say before you die?” asked Dionysius.
“Yes,” said Pythias. “I would ask that you give me five more days of life. I want to say goodbye to my family.”
“Do you think I am stupid?” Dionysius laughed. “How do I know you’ll come back?”
“You have my word.”
“Do you expect me to trust you? I need someone to die in your place if you do not return. Do you have such a friend?”
A loud voice came from the crowd. “Yes!” Damon rushed forward. “I’m his friend Damon. I’ll stay in prison until he returns, and I’ll die for him if I have to.”
Dionysius studied the two friends silently. “Well,” he finally said. “But you’re a fool!”
“He’ll keep his word,” Damon replied.
Pythias was then allowed to leave and Damon was thrown into prison. After a few days, Pythias hadn’t shown up. The king went to the prison to see if Damon regretted his decision. “Your time is almost up.” Dionysius laughed. “What a fool you are!”

F.Their most amazing trait is that they can talk like both children and adults.
G.She bought a grey African parrot from a pet shop when the bird was about one year old.
