If I was to generously offer you an apple from my glorious basket of fruit, and present you with two different choices, chances are that you’d quickly make a choice. You’d then likely walk away, feeling happy and content with your choice. So far so good. However, what might happen if I was to do the same, but get you to choose from a bigger basket of different varieties? Chances are that you might take longer to make a choice—struggling to weigh up the benefits of each. After thinking for a while, you might experience brain fog and frustration and decide you don’t want an apple after all. Or, you might choose one and walk off with it, only to wonder if you made the correct choice. And, if by chance you actually chose the very same apple as you did in our first example, the chances are that it wouldn’t taste quite as good. You can understand the reason for this when you read about the theory of loss aversion. Put simply, studies have found that a loss has more than twice the psychological impact of an equivalent (同等的) gain. It’s more preferable to avoid losing £5 than to gain £5. Such is the pain of regret in losing out through making a ‘poor choice’. The Paradox of Choice is common in modern society. We live in a world of endless choice. Never have human beings been surrounded by such plentiful supply and convenience. Thus, we’ve been suffering a great deal. However, one idea that I’ve found helpful is to get into a habit of setting a time limit on making choices and feeling happy with that. To adopt this idea requires us to become happy with finding something that’s good enough, without necessarily being the best. We could recognise that our time is more important than the need to get an extra 10% on top of what is already good enough. 24. What probably happened when you chose an apple from the bigger basket? A. You made a quick choice. B. You made a wrong choice. C. You were happy with your choice. D. You were dissatisfied with your choice. 25. What does the underlined word “aversion” in paragraph 3 mean? A. Dislike B. Recovery. C. Adjustment. D. Control. 26. Which of the following best describes the Paradox of Choice? A. More is less. B. The more, the merrier. C. Better safe than sorry. D. Don’t cry over spilt milk. 27. What does the author suggest readers do? A. Make informed choices. B. Stay positive and happy. C. Settle for good enough choices. D. Consider time as the most important. C When Eve Perez was in middle school, she remembers feeling embarrassed to shop at secondhand stores. Surrounded by peers in name brands, Perez felt like there was disgrace associated with wearing used clothing. Something changed around five years ago, she recalls—right around the time the social networking platform Tumblr grew in popularity. She noticed a change in how people viewed buying and wearing used clothing. It became a fashionable thing to do. Now, Perez, 21, makes upwards of $1000 each month by selling both handmade and secondhand clothing on Depop, an online resale marketplace with a young user base. “Secondhand shopping has been normalized,” Perez said, 21. “Since so many people are doing it, it’s now seen as cooler. It’s seen as better than going to the mall. Younger people find it fun, like a game. A hunt for something unique.” The increasing returns of that hunt have turned secondhand shopping into a $28 billion industry, according to findings from ThredUp, an online consignment store. Secondhand shopping is no longer just a 高二英语学科 试题 第 页(共 8 页) 4 local, community-driven hobby — it has wings. Accelerating these numbers is Generation Z, whose members have embraced secondhand fashion faster than any other age group and account for over 40% of global consumers. The changing consumer habits and huge buying power of Gen Z are driving the value of resale startups like Depop skyward. The app was acquired by craft marketplace Etsy in a $1.6 billion cash deal this month, a move designed to extend (延伸) Etsy’s reach into a younger and digitally-native audience. Depop was the perfect target. Designed to resemble (与...相似) a social media platform, 90% of the app’s active users are under the age of 26. “Teenagers driving the popularity of secondhand fashion is a pattern that can be observed throughout history,” says Jennifer Le Zotte, a historian. “Young people are generally more open to experimenting with styles and reinventing different versions (版本) of themselves. They want to set themselves apart from the previous generation and to participate in creating those styles with their peers.” 28. What did Perez think of secondhand shopping when in middle school? A. Graceful. B. Shameful C. Profitable. D. Fashionable. 29. What has contributed to the growth of the secondhand shopping industry? A. The great job opportunities it creates. B . The promotion of the local community. C. The decline of traditional shopping malls. D. The pleasure of searching for unique items. 30. Why did Etsy acquire Depop? A. To hold onto its active users. B. To attract more younger users. C. To become more competitive digitally . D. To turn itself into a social media platform. 31. According to Le Zotte, why can teenagers popularize secondhand fashion? A. They are pioneering. B. They are energetic. C. They are economical. D. They are observant. D Every third Friday of May, we pause to recognize the fragile (易损的) existence of endangered species. We share the planet with countless animals, plants, and insects. Yet, many of them are disappearing right before our eyes. National Endangered Species Day urges us to take action before it’s too late. The day was established in 2006 by the U.S. Congress to raise awareness about species in danger of dying out. But the issue goes back decades. Laws to protect endangered species have been around for over 40 years. Today, the urgency (紧急) remains the same. Species are still disappearing, and their habitats are under threat. When the last of a species disappears, it’s gone forever. Endangered species are dangerously close to that fate (命运). Their numbers are so low that every birth counts, every death matters. Some remain in the thousands, others in the hundreds, and a few are down to mere tens. When a species disappears, it doesn’t go quietly. The loss greatly affects ecosystems. When a species disappears, its prey (被捕食者) populations explode. Plants die off, and animals lose their food source. The web of life is fragile, and every species has a role. Take pollinators (授粉昆虫), for instance. Bees, butterflies, and bats help plants reproduce. If they disappear, crops fail, and food chains fall apart. National Endangered Species Day reminds us that time is running out for many species. But the fate of these animals, plants, and insects isn’t set in stone. Organizations like the World Wildlife Federation and the Jane Goodall Institute work tirelessly to protect endangered species. They fund anti-poaching efforts, save injured animals, and restore habitats. Individuals can help too. Donate to wildlife organizations. Volunteer at local conservation centers. Adopt sustainable habits such as using less plastic. Every choice, no matter how small, can make a difference. Saving endangered species isn’t just about protecting animals. It’s about preserving ecosystems, supporting biodiversity, and ensuring a balanced, healthy planet for future generations. And that future starts with us. 32. What do the underlined words “the issue” in paragraph 2 refer to? 高二英语学科 试题 第 页(共 8 页) 5 A. The loss of wildlife habitat. B. The 2006 U.S. Congress decision. C. The problem of species extinction. D. The lack of awareness of endangered species. 33. What does the author try to illustrate by mentioning pollinators in paragraph 4? A. The sharp drop in biodiversity. B. The great importance of ecosystems. C. The urgent need to save endangered species. D. The chain reaction caused by species extinction. 34. What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about? A. The cost of wildlife protection. B. The measures against species extinction. C. The reasons for protecting endangered species. D. The effectiveness of existing preservation efforts. 35. What does the author imply in the last paragraph? A. Ecosystems and biodiversity are closely related. B. Future generations should take more responsibility. C. Protecting endangered species is a time-consuming task. D. Preservation efforts benefit both wildlife and human survival. 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Parents are the number one influence in their children’s lives. 36 In a Parents Empowered survey, parents placed themselves last in the line-up of influences on their children—after friends, teachers and media. 37 Research shows that there are three things parents can do to protect children from risky behaviors: bonding (联结), boundaries (边界), and monitoring. The stronger the relationship between parents and their children, the more the child will not want to disappoint the parent. Eating dinner together as a family has a significant impact on protecting children from risky behavior. 38 Listening to children without preaching (说教) strengthens the bond. Boundaries are set when parents set clear family rules on behaviors such as no alcohol or other drugs. Only a small percentage of teens will try these if parents make it very clear and talk about consequences (后果) for breaking the family rule. A much needed parental task, that tends to drop as the children become teens, is monitoring. A recent study shows the best kind of parenting to protect youth is “warm and with follow through”. 39 When they are going out, ask the questions: Where are you going? Who are you going with? What will you be doing? When will you be home? Will there be alcohol or other drugs there? 40 So it is helpful for kids who have a hard time saying “no” to their friends to be able to use their parents as the fall guys. A. Check on their social media. B. Parents don’t always believe this. C. In other words, trust but check on your kids. D. Have consequences when the rules are broken. E. That’s because there is family togetherness and discussion. F. There are plenty of dangerous activities kids can get into these days. G. But when the youth answered the same question, they placed their parents first. There’s an autumn day that I recall (回想) every time I find myself caught up in the rush of life. In the past, people in China weren’t so lucky. Historical 56 (account) show that 11,400 people died in Beijing in the summer of 1743, as temperatures went up to over 44 degrees Celsius for dozens of days on end. Given the danger of hot temperature, ancient Chinese thought it was best 57 (rest) during the hottest days. Even prisoners 58 (sentence) to death were reprieved (缓刑) until after the summer months. Staying cool was clearly 59 serious matter in ancient China, but 60 (lucky) they had some ways to avoid the worst of the heat. A painting from the sixth century named Proofreading in the Northern Qi Dynasty (《北齐校书图》) by artist Yang Zihua shows scribes (经师) 61 (wear) loose-fitting robes as they worked. In 1972, archeologists 62 (unearth) a silk robe weighing just 95 grams from the Western Han dynasty in the Mawangdui Han Tombs. I expected to see drawings of turkeys and pumpkin pies, symbols of the holiday they might enjoy. Most of the children did draw exactly that—scenes of feasts and family gatherings. Bright colors filled their pages, showing smiling families around dinner tables laden with food. But among this festive atmosphere, there was Lucas, a quiet and sad boy who often stayed by my side while others played at recess (大课间). Lucas was different from the other children. His eyes, always filled with a sadness I could only guess at, seemed to carry the weight of the world. I often found him standing close to me during recess, his small hand sometimes slipping into mine as we watched the other children play. “Take my hand, Lucas, we’ll go outside,” I’d say gently, and he’d follow, his trust obvious in his grip (紧握). When it was Lucas’s turn to share his drawing, he held up his paper, showing a big hand. Just a hand, with nothing else around it. The simplicity of it stirred the imagination of his classmates. Whose hand could it be? One child guessed it was the hand of a farmer, explaining that farmers raise turkeys and provide food. Another suggested it was the hand of a police officer, symbolizing protection and care. The discussion went on and on, each child offering a different interpretation (解读). As the children moved on to other assignments, the image of the hand remained in my mind. Between the two options, I personally prefer “Music Matters”. To begin with, music is a universal language that transcends cultural barriers, so the column “Music Matters” would engage more readers and foster inclusivity. Additionally, music is highly relevant to teenagers, who listen to music daily, whether for relaxation, motivation, or self-expression. The column could feature song recommendations, interviews with student musicians, or discussions about how music impacts mental health— topics that resonate deeply with our peers. Lastly, music can bridge language learning and creativity. Analyzing lyrics or exploring music-related idioms could make English learning more dynamic and fun. Thank you for considering my opinion. I believe it would be a vibrant addition to our newspaper! 第二节(满分 25分) I approached his desk, my heart heavy with curiosity and concern. “Whose hand is it, Lucas?” I asked softly. “It’s yours, Miss White,” he whispered, looking away shyly. His words hit me like a wave, washing over me with an unexpected depth of emotion. In that moment, memories flooded back—times when I had taken his hand to guide him through a lesson, or to comfort him when he seemed lost and alone. It turned out that Lucas was most thankful for MY hand, the hand that had guided him, comforted him, and shown him that he wasn’t alone. His simple yet powerful gesture of gratitude brought tears to my eyes. The next day, I made sure to stay close to Lucas, lending a hand whenever possible. During storytime, I let him turn the pages as I read. When he slipped his hand into mine, I gave it a gentle squeeze. His eyes met mine, and for the first time, I saw not sadness, but happiness. Text 10 These days, many parents are worried because their children spend too much time indoors doing things such as watching TV or playing computer games. A 2018 study in the United Kingdom revealed that children spent about four hours outside per week, roughly 50% less than their parents had as kids. Spending time outdoors isn’t just enjoyable — it’s also necessary. Many researchers agree that kids who play outside are happier, better at paying attention, and less anxious than kids who spend more time indoors. Spending time in nature can build their confidence. There’s a lot less structure than most types of indoor play and they can choose how they interact with the nature around them. This gives them practice managing their own actions and encourages creativity and imagination. Being outdoors can also teach them responsibility. For example, if they are in charge of watering a plant, they can learn that they must take care of living things to keep them alive. Being outside gets kids moving, too. Regardless of what they’re doing, there’s usually more exercise involved than if they were sitting on the couch. Not only is exercise good for kids’ bodies, it seems to make them more focused. Text one. can you fix a date for me to meet with nick?
