Unit 1 My Dream Job-Exploring the Topic-Reading Strategies
This part of "Reading Strategies" in Unit 1 of Grade 8, Ren'ai Science Edition (2024) focuses on equipping students with essential reading skills. It mainly involves two key reading strategies: comparing and contrasting, and taking notes. Through practical reading materials related to daily life, such as different people's sports habits, eating habits, and the benefits and tips of doing sports, students are guided to understand how to compare and contrast the similarities and differences between things or people, and how to take effective notes while reading to better understand and remember the important information in the text. This not only helps students improve their reading comprehension ability but also cultivates their logical thinking and information processing ability.

教学过程
1. Lead-in (5 minutes)
Greet the students and start the class.
Show some pictures of different people doing various sports, such as one picture of a group of students playing basketball happily and another picture of a girl running alone in the park. Then ask the students: "Look at these pictures. Can you tell me the differences and similarities between these two sports scenes?" Encourage students to express their opinions freely. This activity aims to arouse students' interest and lead them to the topic of comparing and contrasting, which is one of the reading strategies to be learned today.
2. Presentation of Reading Strategies (10 minutes)
Comparing and Contrasting
Explain the concept of comparing and contrasting to the students: "When we compare and contrast, we think about how two or more things are alike and how they are different. This can help us better understand the text."
Show the text "Pingping and Yining both love sports a lot. Pingping is outgoing and she always plays football with her friends. Unlike her, Yining is shy. She likes running alone. When doing sports, they both need to take care of their safety." on the screen. Read the text aloud and then analyze it with the students. Point out the similarities (both love sports and need to take care of safety) and differences (Pingping is outgoing and plays football with friends while Yining is shy and likes running alone) between Pingping and Yining. Let students understand how to find and analyze such information in the text through this example.
Taking Notes
Introduce the taking notes strategy: "When you're reading, taking notes of the key words can help you understand and remember the important information. Key words are usually nouns, verbs, or important adjectives that can summarize the main idea of a sentence or a paragraph."
Take the text "Exercise is good for us in many ways. For one thing, it can help build a strong body. For example, jogging is good for our legs and heart. For another, it is a good way to rest and relax our mind. That's why we should do some exercise after hours of work or study. So, don't be lazy. Let's exercise!" as an example. Underline the key words like "exercise", "good", "build body", "jogging", "rest and relax" on the screen while explaining why these are key words. Then show how these key words can help us quickly understand the main idea of the text, that is, exercise has many benefits.
3. Practice (15 minutes)
Activity 1: Comparing and Contrasting Practice
Let students do Activity 3 in the textbook. Pair them up and ask them to discuss Wenwen's and Xiaolu's eating habits based on Activity 2. Provide them with a form on the screen to fill in the similarities and differences. Walk around the classroom to offer help and guidance. After a few minutes, invite some pairs to share their results with the class.
Activity 2: Taking Notes Practice
Show the text "Tips for Doing Sports" on the screen: "When you plan to do exercise, here are some tips for you. Talk with your doctor. He / She can give you some advice according to your condition. Warm up. You need to start slowly with a warm-up, and then move on step by step. Drink enough water. Your body needs a lot of water, especially on hot days. Listen to your body. Take a break or stop right away when you feel uncomfortable."
Ask students to read the text silently and underline the key words by themselves. Then let them take notes based on the key words. After they finish, ask some students to share their key words and notes with the class. Compare different students' notes and discuss which ones are more comprehensive and effective.
4. Theme Reading (10 minutes)
Activity 1: Pair Work
Show some pictures about people feeling down, such as a boy sitting alone looking sad. Ask students to work in pairs and talk about what they often do when they feel down. List some common ways on the screen, like "listen to music", "talk to your parents", "do sports with friends", "keep a diary", etc., to help them start the conversation. Walk around and listen to their conversations, and correct their language mistakes if any.
Activity 2: Reading and Note - taking
Present the two web posts in the textbook on the screen. Let students read the posts carefully, underline the key information, and then complete the notes. After they finish, check the answers together as a class. Explain some difficult sentences or new words in the posts, such as "staying positive has amazing benefits", "communicate with more people". Guide students to understand how to use the reading strategies they have learned to analyze and summarize the content of the web posts.
5. Summary and Homework Assignment (5 minutes)
Summary
Summarize the two reading strategies (comparing and contrasting, taking notes) with the students. Review the key points of how to use these strategies, such as how to find similarities and differences in comparing and contrasting, and how to select key words for taking notes. Also, briefly review the key vocabulary and sentence patterns learned in this class.
Homework Assignment
Ask students to find an English article about health or daily life by themselves. Then ask them to use the two reading strategies they learned today to analyze the article. They need to write down the similarities and differences they find (if applicable) and take notes of the key information. They will share their work in the next class. This homework is designed to let students further practice and master the reading strategies, and also improve their independent learning ability.
教学反思
After this class, overall, most students showed great interest in the reading strategies and actively participated in class activities. The lead - in part successfully attracted students' attention and smoothly led to the topic. During the presentation of reading strategies, through vivid examples, students seemed to have a basic understanding of comparing and contrasting and taking notes. However, in the practice part, some students still had difficulties in accurately using the comparing and contrasting strategy, especially when analyzing complex text content. They might have trouble in finding all the relevant similarities and differences. In the taking notes practice, some students' notes were either too detailed or too simple, failing to effectively summarize the key information.
For future teaching, more in - depth guidance and more practice exercises should be provided. For example, when teaching comparing and contrasting, more complex text materials can be selected, and step - by - step guidance can be given on how to analyze the text. Regarding taking notes, more tips on how to select key words and how to organize notes can be provided. Also, group work can be further strengthened to let students learn from each other and improve their cooperation ability while learning reading strategies.
