第二节 (满分25分)
Paragraph 1: Grandpa held Sami’s hand tightly but a huge wave separated them. Grandpa fought the waves and strived to catch Sami, but failed. Sami was drifted away. He struggled to keep his head above the water. The water pushed him ahead. Fortunately, he caught a palm tree in his courtyard. He panicked and screamed out to Sami but could not see him. He clung to tree tightly while the sea was all around. In hope of seeing Sami, Grandpa climbed higher up the tree. The water carried Sami round and round.(79 words)
Paragraph 12: “Sami, Sami” Grandpa cried. “Don’t be scared, little one, come to me, quickly.” “But Grandpa, I can’t swim” Another wave came with terrifying speed and force. Sami cried in despair. Suddenly, Sami felt himself thrown onto the top of a tree. He immediately held it. Looking around, he saw everything was terribly destroyed; but in the near distance, his Grandpa was on another tree. Soon it was calm; both Grandpa and Sami came down the trees and rushed to hug each other, then they hugged the trees with tears of gratitude.(78 words)

Lucy Brown, aged 12, puts smiles on the faces of kids and keeps them very warm too. She sews (缝纫) blankets (毯子) for children who are dealing with challenges such as being sick, feeling unhappy, or losing a family member.
Lucy got the idea four years ago. She had just learned to sew and made a blanket as a gift for her friend’s birthday. “She loved it,” Lucy says. “So, I thought maybe other kids might need that kind of love.”
Her mom posted (发布) on the Internet that Lucy wanted to make a blanket for someone who needed care. They collected the kids’ suggestions. When 20 suggestions came, Lucy didn’t just choose one. She met all of their needs! She has already made more than 800 blankets for kids in countries.
Her favorite part is learning about each child. “I love hearing their stories and getting to know them,” she says. She tries to design styles according to the children’s interests.
On each of the blankets, Lucy adds a hand-sewn heart. “That’s to let anyone who gets the blanket know they are loved,” she says.
Many kids who receive a blanket keep in touch with Lucy. She now has friends all over the world. “I love knowing that I can make a difference.” Lucy says. “Everyone can do something. Even the smallest act of kindness can change lives.”

Farmers often lose crops because they cannot spot diseases fast enough. When a virus (病毒) spreads, it can destroy many plants and hurt nearby farms too. In Tanzania, several viruses attack crops every year. Farmers used to wait six months or more for lab results, but now a small, hand-held tool is changing everything.
The tool is made by a British company. It looks like a little box and is easy to carry to any field. First, a farmer cuts a tiny piece from a sick leaf. The tool then pulls out the plant’s DNA and reads it. Within two hours, it tells the farmer which virus is hurting the crop. This speed is very important, because the quicker the answer, the sooner the farmer can act.
After testing, farmer Asha Mohamed learned exactly which viruses were on her land. She was given two kinds of new seeds that can resist (阻挡) those viruses. She planted them right away. Nine months later, scientists came back and saw tall, healthy plants and a big harvest. The same tool was also used in Kenya on Naomi Mumo’s pawpaw trees. The quick test showed the exact disease, and Naomi could choose the right treatment.
Because the tool is small and runs on batteries, farmers can use it anywhere. They do not need a big lab or long waiting time. By finding viruses early and choosing resistant seeds, farmers protect their crops, their neighbors’ crops, and their income.
28.Why do researchers invent the tool?
A.To improve the soil of the farm. B.To recognize viruses of crops.
C.To increase the quality of plants. D.To reduce the farming process.
29.What makes the tool special?
A.Checking sick plants. B.Listing all kinds of harm in the soil.
C.Reading plant DNA quickly. D.Finding strong plants.
30.What do the researchers expect of the tool?
A.Saving the farmer’s time. B.Making the crops more suitable to the soil.
C.Making the plants resistant to disease. D.Making advanced technology amazing.
31.Where is the text most likely from?
A.A dairy. B.A guidebook.
C.A fairy novel. D.A science magazine.

Around 40 million tons of electronic waste, known as e-waste, is produced every year. This includes electrical or electronic equipment that has been discarded. But where does it all go? In the US alone, 100 million mobile phones, 41 million computers and over 20 million televisions are thrown into landfills (垃圾填埋场) in a year. Even for standard waste this is a big headache, because any materials that are buried in the ground can’t be easily recovered and recycled. Recycling electronics can save energy and means that less of Earth’s natural resources need to be mined.
Failing to recycle e-waste is extremely damaging the environment due to the nature of the materials used in modern devices. While heavy metals and chemicals improve a device’s safety and user experience, they become poisonous if they’re not dealt with properly. Your old phones, Gameboys, kettles, microwaves and more can end up in landfills, leaking their harmful contents into the soil, water and air. Not only does this kill wildlife and destroy ecosystems, but the accumulation (累积) of poison can impact human health too. As heavy metals and chemicals flow into lakes and rivers, drinking water becomes polluted. These poisons spread through the soil, impacting the health of crops and animals that people also rely on.
In some western countries, e-waste isn’t hidden out of sight in landfills but is burnt in giant, open junkyards. They even ship waste electronics to other countries to deal with, and this often ends up in dumps across Africa and Asia. Workers in these places are exposed to polluted lands and chemical gas.
It is urgent that we should reduce the damaging and unsustainable side of e-waste production. Rare earth metals, some plastics and chemicals can be fed into the next generation of electronics. The steps to proper recycling of e-waste are extensive and need large investment, but more and more countries around the world are turning to e-waste recycling.
32.What does the underlined word “discarded” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.Repaired. B.Protected. C.Used. D.Abandoned.
33.What can be learned from Paragraph 2?
A.E-waste has a permanent effect on the environment.
B.E-waste may do harm to both ecosystems and humans.
C.Heavy metals and chemicals are poisonous to the users.
D.Burying e-waste into landfills is an effective way to recycle.
34.How does the author describe the handling of e-waste in Western countries?
A.By providing data. B.By asking questions.
C.By listing examples. D.By offering a definition.
35.What might the author continue to talk about?
A.Solutions to destroying e-waste. B.Ways to recycle e-waste properly.
C.Applications of recycled materials. D.Investments in restoring ecosystems.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料:根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Ten-year-old Sami loved to visit his grandfather’s house. The house was near the beautiful blue sea. At the seaside stood thick and tall palm trees with green coconuts hanging from them. When the coconuts fell down, Sami would break them open and drink the coconut water. Sami liked to play under the trees. It was always great fun to spend the holidays at Grandpa’s place.
This winter vacation, Sami was surprised when he came to his grandfather’s village. There were hardly any trees left. He saw houses built near the sea. People had cut down many palm trees and there was hardly any greenery left.
Grandpa’s house was different. He never allowed his trees to be cut. He hugged each palm tree in his courtyard. He also named the two big trees near the front door — one was Petu, and the other Betu. He had planted them with his own hands and today they had become large, massive trees with thick trunks. They were tall and green and gave the sweetest, juiciest coconuts.

24.When did Lucy get the idea to sew blankets for other kids?
A.At the age of 4. B.At the age of 8.

D

One night, Sami was awakened by a strange sound. He could not sleep. He tossed (辗转) and turned in bed.
Suddenly, the ground shook as if the earth was splitting. He sat up straight and then ran to Grandpa. He clung (附着) to his grandpa tightly. Grandpa cried out, “It’s an earthquake It’s an earthquake” They ran outside the house. They thought that would be safe.

Suddenly, there was a loud sound; the earth was not splitting but the sea was roaring. People were shouting, screaming and crying, “The sea is rising. The sea is rising.” The villagers started running away from the beach.Sami watched dumbstruck (呆若木鸡).
The waves were rising higher and higher. Sami thought, “How big the waves are” He went into the house again and saw water coming in from all sides. He was scared.
Sami remembered his mother telling him long ago, “You must always get out of the house if the floods come too near.” He ran outside the house with Grandpa. But the water came surging (汹涌) in.
Waves about twelve meters high came rushing in, drowning everything. Water was all around and everywhere.
