If you are hiking with a friend who is overweight, you may hear them say that the hills look steeper (更陡峭的) and the distances look farther away than what they really are. Is your friend lazy? Actually, this is just what the world looks like in their eyes.
Scientists from Colorado State University show that being overweight distorts perception (扭曲知觉). They think distances are farther away than they actually are.
In one study, scientists asked 66 people of different weights and sizes to say how far away a traffic cone (交通围标) was. In fact, the cone was 25m away. Those who were about 57kg thought it was just 15m from them, but those who weighed about 146kg saw it as being 30m away.
So far from being crazy. Overweight people simply see the world differently when thinking about exercise. The heavy weight can feel like a load (装载物) to carry.
“If you find yourself out hiking with a heavy backpack, hills are going to seem steeper, distances are going to look farther, and a gap across a river is going to look bigger.” Jessica Witt from Colorado State University told the Guardian.
It’s this idea that if you have to make more of an effort to climb that hill because you are carrying this heavy backpack, the hill is going to look more challenging (有挑战性的).
“You are not seeing that hill as it is. You are seeing the world through your ability to act. You have less ability because you are having to carry this backpack.” Witt said. Sometimes the steepest hills exist in the mind before the feet ever feel them.
31. Why might an overweight hiker see a hill as steeper than it really is?
A. Because they don’t want to exercise.
B. Because they need glasses.
C. Because they’re not good at hiking.
D. Because their body makes challenges seem bigger.
32. From the third paragraph we can know that ________.
A. heavier people guessed distances more correctly
B. everyone saw the cone at the same distance
C. people’s weight affected (影响) how far they thought the cone was
D. people who were about 57kg thought the traffic cone was just 30m from them
33. Jessica Witt compared carrying extra body weight to ________.
A. hiking with a heavy backpack B. going uphill on a bicycle
C. wearing uncomfortable shoes D. walking in bad weather
34. What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph mean?
A. Everyone sees the world the same way.
B. People see things based on (基于) what they can easily do.
C. Only strong people see things correctly.
D. Your eyes change when you exercise.
35. The writer’s main purpose in writing this passage is to tell ________.
A. hiking is harder for overweight people
B. the importance of being the right weight and size
C. everyone should lose weight
D. we should understand that people experience challenges differently
【答案】31. D 32. C 33. A 34. B 35. D

Marilla was angry. Anne lost the brooch and didn’t feel guilty. “Anne, this is terrible,” Marilla said. “You are very naughty.” “Yes. I know I have to be punished,” agreed Anne calmly. “Please do it now. I want to go to the picnic without guilt.” “You are not going to the picnic. That is your punishment.” “What?” Anne stood suddenly. “Oh, Marilla, that was why I confessed. Any punishment except that. Oh, Marilla, please, can I go to the picnic? Please.”
“You are not going to the picnic.”
Anne threw her body on the bed and cried.
Marilla left the room quickly. “Oh dear, Mrs Rachel Lynde was right. But I began this work with Anne. I must continue.” At lunch-time Marilla called Anne. “Come and have lunch, Anne.”
“I can’t eat anything,” said Anne. “My heart is broken.” Marilla was very annoyed. She spoke to Matthew.
“Well, she wasn’t right taking the brooch. And telling lies was bad,” said Matthew. “But she’s so young. I think she needs to go to that picnic.”
“Matthew, I think I was too easy with her. And she doesn’t understand that she was naughty. You’re defending her.” Matthew was quiet. He didn’t agree with Marilla.
After lunch Marilla remembered she had to repair her shawl. The shawl was in a box on the table in her room. Marilla lifted it. It seemed that something was attached to the shawl. It glittered. It was the amethyst brooch.
“Oh dear,” said Marilla, “Here’s my brooch. But Anne said she took it and lost it.” Marilla went to Anne’s bedroom with the brooch.

Another middle school has introduced TCM courses to students of all grades. These courses cover a basic (基础的) knowledge of herbs, herb planting and cooking with herbs. They give students a much deeper understanding of TCM, bringing out their sense of pride in Chinese traditions and the country’s rich culture. Wang Haoxuan, a Grade 8 student from the school, told the reporter happily, “I have learned a lot about TCM from the courses. And as a Chinese, I really feel proud of our great country.” He took part in a knowledge competition about TCM the other day. He was glad that he came fourth in the end. “I will go on learning Chinese medicine to improve myself. I dream of being a Chinese medicine doctor when I grow up,” he added.
Also in Shanghai, Tongji University has provided foreign students with some chances to plant different kinds of herbs widely used in Chinese medicine and cooking. By taking care of the plants, foreign students can learn how to make herbal medicine from start to finish, and spread TCM culture to their own countries.
The herb planting courses at schools and universities across China get students even closer to TCM and help pass on the tradition.

No time to stop
After facing great challenges, 30-year-old Spanish motorcycle racer (摩托车手) Marc Marquez has made a successful comeback. On March 16, the six-time world champion (冠军) won his second race of the 2025 MotoGP season at the Argentina Grand Prix.
Born in Cervera, Spain, in 1995, Marquez asked his parents for a bike before he turned 4 years old. In 2013, he started his MotoGP journey and won a world championship in his first season. Between 2014 and 2019, he was at the top of the sport, winning five out of six championships.
At 1.68 meters tall, Marquez got the nickname (绰号) “the Ant of Cervera”. This was due to his small size but amazing ability to control a 160-kilogram motorcycle at speeds of up to 350 kilometers per hour. He also pioneered the “elbow down” riding style, where riders keep their elbows close to the ground to go faster.
Just as Marquez was about to reach bigger goals, a serious accident in the 2020 MotoGP season broke his right arm. Since then, he’s been working hard to get better from a number of crashes (撞车) and injuries (受伤). During his recovery (恢复), Marquez’s team had to take the wheels off his bike and hide them so he wouldn’t try to ride. He’s not afraid of the crashes that nearly ended his career. “Maybe sometimes I’m taking too much risk but I cannot ride a bike worrying about the crashing,” Marquez told The Guardian.
With two wins in a row, Marquez has made a strong start to win his first world title (冠军) since 2019. “I continue fighting because, in the end, my love for racing is more than what I was suffering,” he added.

A heavier people guessed distances more correctly
B. everyone saw the cone at the same distance
C. people’s weight affected (影响) how far they thought the cone was
D. people who were about 57kg thought the traffic cone was just 30m from them

People use traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM 传统中医) to help keep the balance (平衡) of yin and yang. But have you ever thought that one day you can learn herb (药草) planting and TCM courses at school?
A primary school in Nanjing has just opened a herb farm. More than 30 herbs are planted. Students there are guided by doctors from a TCM hospital to tell different herbs and learn plant development, medicinal value as well as growing herbs. So far, the hospital has given the school over 100 cartoon books about TCM to help make more children interested in herbal medicine.

A. To let students have fun in planting.

41. What can we infer from Wang Haoxuan’s words?
A. He doesn’t like other subjects except TCM.
B. He wants to win first place in the next TCM knowledge competition.
C. He will give up learning TCM if he doesn’t do well in it.
