Grandparents Answer a Call
As a third-generation native of Brownsville, Texas, Mildred Garza never planned to move away.Even when her daughter and son asked her to move to San Antonio to help with their children, she politely refused.Only after a year of friendly discussion did Ms.Garza finally say yes. That was four years ago.Today all three generations regard the move as a success, giving them a closer relationship than they would have had in separate cities.
No statistics show the number of grandparents like Garza who are moving closer to adult children and grandchildren. Yet there is evidence suggesting that the trend is growing.Even President Obama’s mother-in-law, Marian Robinson, has agreed to leave Chicago and move into the White House to help care for her granddaughters. According to a study by grandparents.com, 83 percent of the people said Mrs.Robinson's decision will influence grandparents in the American family.Two-thirds believe more families will follow the example of Obama’s family.
“In the 1960s we were all a little wild and couldn't get away from home far enough or fast enough to prove we could do it on our own,”says Christine Crosby, publisher of Grand, a magazine for grandparents. “We now realize how important family is and how important it is to be near them, especially when you’re raising children.”
Moving is not for everyone. Almost every grandparent wants to be with his or her grandchildren and is willing to make sacrifices, but sometimes it is wiser to say no and visit frequently instead.Having your grandchildren far away is hard, especially knowing your adult child is struggling, but giving up the life you know may be harder.
1. Why was Garza’s move a success?
A. It strengthened her family ties.
B. It improved her living conditions.
C. It enabled her to make more friends.
D. It helped her know more new places.
2. What was the reaction of the public to Mrs.Robinson’s decision?
A. 17% expressed their support for it.
B. Few people responded sympathetically.
C. 83% believed it had a bad influence.
D. The majority thought it was a trend.
3. What did Crosby say about people in the 1960s?
A. They were unsure of themselves.
B. They were eager to raise more children.
C. They wanted to live away from their parents.
D. They had little respect for their grandparents.
4. What does the author suggest the grandparents do in the last paragraph?
A. Make decisions in the best interests of their own.
B. Ask their children to pay more visits to them.
C. Sacrifice for their struggling children.
D. Get to know themselves better.
A 2. D 3. C 4. A
根据第一段最后一句“Today all three generations regard the move as a success, giving them a closer relationship than they would have had in separate cities.” 故选A。
根据第二段结尾处“...83 percent of the people said Mrs. Robinson’s decision will influence grandparents in the American family. Two-thirds believe more families will follow the example of Obama’s family.”
根据第三段第一句“In the 1960s we were all a little wild and couldn’t get away from home far enough or fast enough to prove we could do it on our own,”可知那时的人们一心希望离家越远越好、越快越好。
第四段首句“Moving is not for everyone”已经说明“移居并非适合每一个人”,再结合下文“Having yourgrandchildren far away is hard, especially knowing your adult child is struggling, but giving up the life you know may be harder.” 故选A。
B
The meaning of silence varies among cultural groups. Silences may be thoughtful or they may be empty when a person has nothing to say. A silence in a conversation may also show stubbornness, uneasiness, or worry. Silence may be viewed by some cultural groups as extremely uncomfortable; therefore attempts may be made to fill every gap (间隙) with conversation. Persons in other cultural groups value silence and view it as necessary for understanding a person’s needs.
Many Native Americans value silence and feel it is a basic part of communicating among people, just as some traditional Chinese and Thai persons do. Therefore, when a person from one of these cultures is speaking and suddenly stops, what may be implied (暗示) is that the person wants the listener to consider what has been said before continuing. In these cultures, silence is a call for reflection.
Other cultures may use silence in other ways, particularly when dealing with conflicts among people or in relationships of people with different amounts of power. For example, Russian, French, and Spanish persons may use silence to show agreement between parties about the topic under discussion. However, Mexicans may use silence when instructions are given by a person in authority rather than be rude to that person by arguing with him or her. In still another use, persons in Asian cultures may view silence as a sign of respect, particularly to an elder or a person in authority.
Nurses and other care-givers need to be aware of the possible meanings of silence when they come across the personal anxiety their patients may be experiencing. Nurses should recognize their own personal and cultural construction of silence so that a patient’s silence is not interrupted too early or allowed to go on unnecessarily. A nurse who understands the healing (治愈) value of silence can use this understanding to assist in the care of patients from their own and from other cultures.
5. What does the author say about silence in conversations?
A. It is culture-specific. B. It implies anger.
C. It promotes friendship. D. It is content-based.
6. What does the author advise nurses to do about silence?
A. Let it continue as the patient pleases. B. Make use of its healing effects.
C. Break it while treating patients. D. Evaluate its harm to patients.
7. What may be the best title for the text?
A. Sound and Silence B. Silence to Native Americans
C. What It Means to Be Silent D. Speech Is Silver, Silence Is Gold
根据第一段“The meaning of silence varies among cultural groups. (沉默的含义在不同文化群体中存在差异)”以及后文分别列举美洲原住民、中国人、泰国人、俄罗斯人、法国人、墨西哥人、亚洲人等不同文化群体对沉默的不同看法可知,作者认为对话中的沉默具有文化特异性,不同文化对其解读不同。故选A项。
根据最后一段“A nurse who understands the healing (治愈) value of silence can use this understanding to assist in the care of patients from their own and from other cultures. (理解沉默治愈价值的护士,可以利用这种理解来帮助照顾来自自身文化和其他文化背景的患者)”可知,作者建议护士利用沉默的治愈效果来辅助患者护理。故选B项。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“The meaning of silence varies among cultural groups. Silences may be thoughtful, or they may be empty when a person has nothing to say. A silence in a conversation may also show stubbornness, uneasiness, or worry. Silence may be viewed by some cultural groups as extremely uncomfortable; therefore attempts may be made to fill every gap (间隙) with conversation.
C
Some of the world’s most famous musicians recently gathered in Paris and New Orleans to celebrate the first annual International Jazz Day. UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) recently set April 30 as a day to raise awareness of jazz music, its significance, and its potential as a unifying (联合) voice across cultures.
Despite the celebrations, though, in the U.S. the jazz audience continues to shrink and grow older, and the music has failed to connect with younger generations.
It’s Jason Moran’s job to help change that. As the Kennedy Center’s artistic adviser for jazz, Moran hopes to widen the audience for jazz, make the music more accessible, and preserve its history and culture.
“Jazz seems like it’s not really a part of the American appetite,” Moran tells National Public Radio’s reporter Leon Conan. “What I’m hoping to accomplish is that my generation and younger start to reconsider and understand that jazz is not black and white anymore. It’s actually color, and it’s actually digital.”
Moran says one of the problems with jazz today is that the entertainment aspect of the music has been lost. “The music can’t be presented today the way it was in 1908 or 1958. It has to continue to move, because the way the world works is not the same,” says Moran.
Last year, Moran worked on a project that arranged Fats Waller’s music for a dance party, “just to kind of put it back in the mind that Waller is dance music as much as it is concert music,” says Moran. “For me, it’s the recontextualization. In music, where does the emotion (情感) lie? Are we, as humans, gaining any insight (感悟) on how to talk about ourselves and how something as abstract as a Charlie Parker record gets us into a dialogue about our emotions and our thoughts? Sometimes we lose sight that the music has a wider context,” says Moran, “so I want to continue those dialogues. Those are the things I want to foster.”
8. Why did UNESCO set April 30 as International Jazz Day?
A. To recognize the value of jazz. B. To remember the birth of jazz.
C. To protect cultural diversity. D. To encourage people to study music.
9. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Jazz becoming more accessible. B. Jazz being less popular with the young.
C. The production of jazz growing faster. D. The jazz audience becoming larger.
10. What can we infer about Moran’s opinion on jazz?
A. It will disappear gradually. B. It remains black and white.
C. It changes every 50 years. D. It should keep up with the times.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. The Rise and Fall of Jazz. B. The Story of a Jazz Musician.
C. Exploring the Future of Jazz. D. Celebrating the Jazz Day.
A 9. B 10. D 11. C
根据第一段“UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) recently set April 30 as a day to raise awareness of jazz music, its significance, and its potential as a unifying (联合) voice across cultures. (联合国教科文组织(联合国教育、科学及文化组织)近日将4月30日定为“国际爵士乐日”,旨在提升公众对爵士乐及其重要意义的认识,并彰显其作为跨文化统一声音的潜力。)”可知,联合国教科文组织将4月30日定为国际爵士乐日是为了认可爵士乐的价值。故选A。
根据第二段“Despite the celebrations, though, in the U.S. the jazz audience continues to shrink and grow older, and the music has failed to connect with younger generations. (然而,尽管有这些庆祝活动,但在美国,爵士乐的受众群体仍在不断缩减且年龄日趋老龄化,这种音乐也未能打动年轻一代。)”和第三段“It’s Jason Moran’s job to help change that. (Jason Moran的职责就是助力改变这一现状。)”可知,第三段中的that指代的是爵士乐在年轻人中受欢迎程度降低。故选B。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“What I’m hoping to accomplish is that my generation and younger start to reconsider and understand that jazz is not black and white anymore. It’s actually color, and it’s actually digital. (我所期望达成的目标是,让像我这一代以及更年轻的人开始重新审视并理解:爵士乐早已不再是非黑即白(传统刻板的模样)。它其实色彩斑斓,而且已然数字化。)”和第五段“It has to continue to move, because the way the world works is not the same (它必须持续发展演进,因为世界运行的机制已与以往不同)”可知,关于莫兰对爵士乐的看法,我们能推断出它应该与时俱进。
通读全文,尤其是第二段“Despite the celebrations, though, in the U.S. the jazz audience continues to shrink and grow older, and the music has failed to connect with younger generations. (然而,尽管有这些庆祝活动,但在美国,爵士乐的受众群体仍在不断缩减且年龄日趋老龄化,这种音乐也未能打动年轻一代。)”和第三段“It’s Jason Moran’s job to help change that. As the Kennedy Center’s artistic adviser for jazz, Moran hopes to widen the audience for jazz, make the music more accessible, and preserve its history and culture. 。故选C。
D
A build-it-yourself solar still(蒸馏器) is one of the best ways to obtain drinking water in areas where the liquid is not readily available. Developed by two doctors in the U.S. Department of Agriculture, it’s an excellent water collector. Unfortunately, you must carry the necessary equipment with you, since it’s all but impossible to find natural substitutes. The only components required, though, are a 5'×5' sheet of clear or slightly milky plastic, six feet of plastic tube, and a container— perhaps just a drinking cup — to catch the water. These pieces can be folded into a neat little pack and fastened on your belt.
To construct a working still, use a sharp stick or rock to dig a hole four feet across and three feet deep. Try to make the hole in a damp area to increase the water catcher’s productivity. Place your cup in the deepest part of the hole. Then lay the tube in place so that one end rests all the way in the cup and the rest of the line runs up — and out — the side of the hole.
Next, cover the hole with the plastic sheet, securing the edges of the plastic with dirt and weighting the sheet’s center down with a rock. The plastic should now form a cone(圆锥体) with 45-degree-angled sides. The low point of the sheet must be centered directly over, and no more than three inches above, the cup.
The solar still works by creating a greenhouse under the plastic. Ground water evaporates (蒸发) and collects on the sheet until small drops of water form, run down the material and fall off into the cup. When the container is full, you can suck the refreshment out through the tube, and won’t have to break down the still every time you need a drink.
12. What do we know about the solar still equipment from the first paragraph?
A. It’s delicate. B. It’s expensive.
C. It’s complex. D. It’s portable.
13. What does the underlined phrase “the water catcher” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. The tube. B. The still.
C. The hole. D. The cup.
14. What’s the last step of constructing a working solar still?
A. Dig a hole of a certain size. B. Put the cup in place.
C. Weight the sheet’s center down. D. Cover the hole with the plastic sheet.
15. When a solar still works, drops of water come into the cup from ________.
A. the plastic tube B. outside the hole
C. the open air D. beneath the sheet
D 13. B 14. C 15. D
These pieces can be folded into a neat little pack and fastened on your belt.
Try to make the hole in a damp area to increase the water catcher’s productivity可知,最好在潮湿的地方挖洞,以提高接水器的工作效率。
Next, cover the hole with the plastic sheet, securing the edges of the plastic with dirt and weighting the sheet’s center down with a rock.可知,最后一步是weighting the sheet’s center down with a rock“放一块石头在覆盖膜的中间,把它压下去”,故选C。
根据第四段中的Ground water evaporates (蒸发) and collects on the sheet until small drops of water form, run down the material and fall off into the cup可知,地下水蒸发,在覆盖膜上聚集起来直到形成小水滴落在杯子里。

A It strengthened her family ties.
B
The meaning of silence varies among cultural groups.

To construct a working still use a sharp stick or rock to dig a hole four feet across and three feet deep.
