M: Hi, I’m Chris from Florida. Last year, I moved to London, where I’m working for an American company. It’s been a big change, and there have been lots of things to get used to. For example, in the U.S. we drive on the right, while here in Britain I’ve had to get used to driving on the left.
What else? Well, the weather in Florida is usually great, so I’m used to lots of sunshine, and I used to sunbathe a lot. In London it rains so much. I don’t think I’ll ever get used to it, and I always remember to take my umbrella with me.
Food in England is different, too. In America, I used to eat a lot of Mexican food. Here in England, people love Indian food, so I’m getting used to the different tastes. At the company where I work, it’s quite different. I used to work from 9 a.m. till 11 p.m. I hated working so late. Here in England, I start at 8:30 a.m., but finish at 5 p.m. On Friday evening English people like to go to the club with friends, but in America I used to go to the gym. I love sports.
Is there anything else? Some of the words are different. The subway is called the “underground” in London, and British people call the fall “autumn”.

In the past several years, the use of social media has grown in a way that no one could have guessed. It has turned some teenagers into celebrities and turned the famous into the infamous overnight
A key feature of social media, however, is its volatility. Trends come and go, disappearing almost as quickly as they appeared. So, what were the key social media trends of 2023?
Short video apps such as TikTok and its Chinese equivalent (等同物) Douyin, took the world by storm. The Telegraph reported that TikTok was ranked 8th on Apple’s App Store in April. And Douyin had more than 300 million domestic (国内的) monthly active users in June at home, CNBC said.
Why are these short videos—which are rarely longer than a few minutes—so popular? Jiang Yige. Singapore-based analyst at FengHe Fund Management. has a theory. ”Short videos are just right to fill in the little gaps in our busy schedules.“ he told CNBC.
These videos—apart from being very convenient are important to teenagers because they allow them to express themselves, according to Teen Vogue. Liza Koshy, a user of the U.S. app Musically who has over 2 million followers, said, “The sense of community that users of short video apps get is another appealing feature.”
Live streaming is a feature of our social media life that now seems as natural as sunrise. It’s a pretty neat idea: You can watch anyone. anywhere. live. However. China has taken live streaming to a whole new level. In China. more than 100 million viewers monthly watch a live streaming video. Forbes thought that a number of factors had led to the popularity of live streams. Among them is viewers’ ability to interact with unknown names.
However, the quick development of social media may be having side effects too, Fake news is one serious problem it causes, Materials shared on these platforms are often not checked for accuracy. The most basic content can be false and can mislead users one way or another. We use social media all the time; that doesn’t mean that we understand the influence it is having on us. We should be mindful of both the time we spend on it and its impact on our minds.
28. What does the underlined word ”volatility“ in paragraph 2 possibly mean?
A. Being changeable. B. Being famous.
C. Being promising. D. Being popular.
29. According to Liza Koshy, why are short videos very popular?
A. They are very cheap. B. They help people kill time.
C. They provide a sense of community. D. They allow people to express themselves.
30. What do we know about social media?
A. The information from social media is totally reliable.
B. When it comes to social media, people only know short videos.
C. People can’t communicate with each other without social media.
D. There is still much room for social media to make improvement.
31. What is the author’s attitude to the quick development of social media?
A. Objective. B. Subjective. C. Supportive. D. Negative.
A 29. C 30. D 31. A

根据第五段的“Liza Koshy, a user of the U.S. app Musically who has over 2 million followers, said, ‘The sense of community that users of short video apps get is another appealing feature. ’( 美国Musically应用的用户Liza Koshy拥有超过200万粉丝,她说:‘短视频应用的用户获得的社区感是另一个吸引人的特点’)”可知,Liza Koshy认为短视频应用的用户获得的社区感是另一个吸引人的特点,即短视频给用户提供了社区感。故选C。

One of the ocean’s noisiest creatures is smaller than you’d expect — snapping shrimp (鼓虾). They create a widespread background noise in the underwater environment, which helps them communicate, protect their homes and hunt for food. When enough shrimp snap (发出噼啪声) at once, the noise can be deafening.
Aran Mooney, a biologist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, suggested that with increased ocean temperatures, snapping shrimp will snap more often and louder than before. This could raise the background noise of the global ocean. “They make a sound by closing a claw so fast. This makes a bubble (泡泡) and when that bubble bursts, it makes that snapping sound,” said Mooney.
Mooney discovered a strong relationship between warmer waters and more frequent snapping shrimp sounds after experimenting with the shrimp in tanks in the lab and by listening to the shrimp in the ocean at various water temperatures. “As the temperature rises, the snap rate increases,” he said. This makes sense because shrimp are essentially cold-blooded animals, meaning their body temperature and activity levels are largely controlled by their living environment. “We can actually show in the field that not only do snap rates increase, but the sound levels increase as well.”
How the louder snapping shrimp would affect or benefit the surroundings remained to be seen. “We know that fish use sound to communicate,” Mooney said. “If the environment gets noisy, it has the possibility to influence that communication. That’s something we have to follow up on.” There is also the possibility that the change of snapping shrimp affects machines humans use to discover mines, which could lead to unpleasant results.
32. What can we know about the snapping shrimp’s sound?
A. It aims to protect the shrimp. B. It is important to the ecosystem.
C. It has different uses for the shrimp. D. It is hard to be discovered by other creatures.
33. How does Mooney do the experiment?
A. By observing snapping shrimp in the field. B. By recording the snap rates in the lab.
C. By analyzing the way shrimp make noise. D. By comparing shrimp’s sound in different places.
34. What might Mooney research next?
A. Other uses of shrimp’s sound. B. Influences of the noise on other creatures.
C. Means of communication among fish. D. Methods of stopping shrimp’s snapping.
35. Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
A. Underwater World Is No Longer Quiet B. Small Animals Make a Big Difference
C. Warming Oceans Are Getting Louder D. Snapping Shrimp’s Noise Speaks Much
C 33. D 34. B 35. C
根据第一段中的“They create a widespread background noise in the underwater environment, which helps them communicate, protect their homes and hunt for food. When enough shrimp snap (发出噼啪声) at once, the noise can be deafening. (它们在水下环境中产生广泛的背景噪音,这有助于它们交流、保护家园和寻找食物。当足够多的虾同时发出噼啪声,噪音可以震耳欲聋)”可知,鼓虾发出的声音有助于它们交流、保卫家园和寻找食物,即有多种作用。故选C。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“Mooney discovered a strong relationship between warmer waters and more frequent snapping shrimp sounds after experimenting with the shrimp in tanks in the lab and by listening to the shrimp in the ocean at various water temperatures. (Mooney在实验室的水箱里对虾进行实验,并在不同的水温下聆听虾的声音,他发现温暖的海水和更频繁的鼓虾声之间存在着密切的联系)”可知,Mooney在实验室的水箱中用鼓虾做实验,并听各种水温里的鼓虾发出的声音。由此推知,他通过对比在不同地点鼓虾发出的声音进行实验。故选D。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的““We know that fish use sound to communicate,” Mooney said. “If the environment gets noisy, it has the possibility to influence that communication. That’s something we have to follow up on.”
