We can see differences when we pay attention to the way words are used. Let's look at the words about animals and plants. Most expressions in Chinese about the dog, for example, “a homeless dog” “a mad dog” “a running dog” and “a dog catching a mouse”, have negative meanings. But in western countries, dogs are thought to be honest and good friends of humans. In English, people use dogs to describe positive actions. For example, “you are a lucky dog” means you are a lucky person. And “every dog has its day” means each person has good luck sometimes. To describe a person's serious illness, they say “sick as a dog”. The word “dog-tired” means very tired. However, Chinese love cats very much. But in western culture, “cat” is often used to describe a woman who is cruel. The rose is regarded as a symbol of love in both China and some western countries. People think the rose means love, peace, courage and friendship. And the rose is the national flower of England, America and many other countries. The words about plants and animals are used in positive or negative ways in different cultures. We can learn about many differences by comparing how some words are used. 1. “Every dog has its day” means “__________”. A. Everybody in the world is lucky B. Each person lives his own way of life C. If one works hard, he's sure to succeed D. Everybody has a time in life to be lucky 2. Western people usually use “cat” to refer to __________. A. a tired person B. a brave man C. a homeless person D. an unkind woman 3. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A. Words show differences in different cultures. B. Chinese people prefer dogs to cats. C. Western people think cats are good friends. D. Rose is the national flower of all western countries. 4. What's the best title for the passage? A. Negative or Positive B. Different Countries Have Different Cultures C. Rose Means the Same in Chinese and English D. What Dog and Cat Mean in English and Chinese 5. The rose is regarded as a symbol of __________ in China. A. love B. peace C. courage D. friendship 【答案】1.D 2.D 3.A 4.B 5.A 【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了中西方文化在动植物词汇使用上的差异,通过对比“狗”“猫”“玫瑰”等词汇的不同象征意义,展现了文化差异对语言表达的影响。 【详解】 1.细节理解题。根据第一段中“And‘every dog has its day’means each person has good luck sometimes.”可知,“every dog has its day”意为“每个人都有幸运的时候”。故选D项。 2.细节理解题。根据第一段最后一句“But in western culture, ‘cat’ is often used to describe a woman who is cruel.”可知,西方文化中“cat”常用来形容残忍的女性,即“不友善的女人”。故选D项。 3.细节理解题。根据第一段首句“As we know, there are differences between western culture and Chinese culture. Is that even possible? Well, according to a research team in China, the answer is yes! Not long ago, in the remains of an ancient palace in Xi’an, Chinese archeologists (考古学家) discovered several broken parts of a 2, 400-year-old flush toilet. They believe it might be the world’s oldest flush toilet. Although the upper parts of it are nowhere to be found today, what’s left is still in good shape. “It is the first and only flush toilet that has been unearthed (出土) in China, ”said Liu Rui, a researcher. Everybody on the research team was taken by surprise when we found it, and then we all couldn’t help laughing. Described by researchers as a “luxury (奢华的) object”, the toilet is thought to have been located inside the palace. The researchers believe this toilet was probably for important people between the Warring States Period and the later Han Dynasty. According to the researchers, this toilet might have been used by Duke Xiao of Qin or his father, Duke Xian of Qin. Liu pointed out that the toilet was probably set indoors and connected to an outdoor pit(深坑). The servants would pour water into it every time the owner used the toilet. There are many historical records about toilets in ancient China and some ancient toilets have been unearthed. It shows that the ancient Chinese already realized the importance of hygiene (卫生).
