Do not do to others what you do not want others to do to you.
-Confucius
Not everyone thinks the way you think, knows the things you know, believes the things you believe, nor acts the way you would act. Remember this and you will go a long way in getting along with people.
-Arthur Forman
We need people, we need the cooperation of others. There is very little we can do alone.
-Earl Nightingale

1. What does each quote mean?
己所不欲,勿施于人。

我们需要他人,需要他人的合作。我们独自一人能做的事情非常有限。

People are different - like some people love basketball while others enjoy drawing. When we accept these differences, it helps avoid arguments and builds understanding.
Activity 2
Watch the video and answer the question.
1. What can Nancy say to make Peter feel better?
2. What do you think of Jim’s behavior?
3. How can Tracy make sure everyone is happy with the plan?
Activity 2
How to get along with others
Scene 1:
A: Morning, Peter. What’s up? You look unhappy?
B: Hi, Nancy. My grandma is very sick. She’s in hospital, and I’m so worried.
A: Oh, guess what? My sister was also sick last week, but she’s fine now. Anyway, did you see the film yesterday? I think it’s amazing.
1. What can Nancy say to make Peter feel better?
“I’m really sorry to hear about your grandma, Peter.”
“It must be tough for you.”
“If there’s anything I can do, I’m here for you.”
Activity 2
How to get along with others
Scene 2:
A: Your home is so beautiful. I love everything here.
B: Thank you, Jim. Make yourself at home.
A: That painting is great. Can I have a closer look?
B: Well, okay.
A: This plate is wonderful.
B: Be careful.
A: Come on. It’s just a quick touch. What’s in the box? Can I see it?
B: Emmm...
2. What do you think of Jim’s behavior?
Jim’s behavior is impolite. He touches things without asking. He should be more careful and respect other people’s things.
Activity 2
How to get along with others
Scene 3:
A: Shall we watch a film this weekend?
B: Cool. Maybe we can have some ice cream after that.
C: No way. We’re going to try the Chili Palace.
A: But Tracy, Thomas doesn’t really like hot food. Maybe we could...
C: I’m sure he’ll be fine. Let’s meet at 6:30.
B: Well...
3. How can Tracy make sure everyone is happy with the plan?
Asking what everyone wants to do.
Picking a place that has food for everyone.
Making sure the time is ok for everyone.
Activity 3
Think and share.
Do you have any problems in getting along with others? Can you share one with the class?
Yes. I had a problem with a classmate named Jake. We were in a group for a science project about the solar system. Jake wasn’t doing his part, and I was getting really angry. One day, I shouted at him in front of everyone. Jake felt bad, and everyone was uncomfortable. After that, I keep thinking. Maybe I could talk to Jake instead of getting mad. Maybe if I had been more patient and tried to understand why he wasn’t helping, things would have been different. This teaches me that it’s important to be patient and try to understand others.
