Four most dangerous roads in the world
Any road can be treacherous in the wrong weather conditions or with a reckless driver on the loose but these four are the most dangerous roads in the world.
Col du Chaussy, France
At 1,532 metres above sea level, Col du Chaussy in the Rhône-Alpes region of south-eastern France is a high mountain pass that starts with the famous “Les Lacets de Montvernier.” This special stretch is only about 3.2 km long but features 17 hairpin turns as you climb up an actual cliff. There’s a small concrete barrier as you zigzag upward but this improbable road, while impossibly picturesque, is still one of the most dangerous roads in the world.
Karnali Highway, Nepal
Approximately 50 people die here every year, making a drive on the 250 km Karnali Highway in the Himalayas of West Nepal a literal death wish. It is one of the most dangerous roads in the world even when it’s not monsoon season because the surface is extremely dusty making visibility poor and includes narrow stretches, landslides, falling rocks, flooded sections, potholes, huge drops off steep cliffs, and significant bumpiness. And now it is only a road passable, at best, during the day as the police have banned driving at night due to the high number of fatal accidents.
Commonwealth Avenue, Philippines
Unlike other roads and highways on this list, this one isn’t perched on the edge of a mountain or near a crumbling bridge. In fact, it’s a wide urban highway that’s just 12 km long. Eighteen lanes wide to be specific and due to heavy traffic, poor drainage which brings floods on the avenue, and the constant presence of motorbikes and pedestrians that tour buses can’t even see, this road has earned the tragic nickname “Killer Highway” because of the many accidents and fatalities suffered here.
Taroko Gorge Road, Taiwan
Taroko Gorge Road is one of the most dangerous roads in the world because it is carved out of a mountain and runs through one too. This popular 19km stretch in Taiwan is spectacular so you can expect a parade of tour buses, cars, scooters, bicyclists and pedestrians all sharing the same narrow road, and all trying to navigate blind corners and terrifying bends that look too small to fit around. If you find yourself on Taroko Gorge Road, you better hope the weather is fair, otherwise, you might suffer through landslides, floods and falling rocks that make sections impassable.
1. What do the four roads mentioned in the passage have in common?
A. They are all located in mountainous areas.
B. They all have a high risk of accidents and are among the world’s most dangerous roads.
C. They are all closed to traffic at night.
D. They all have problems with landslides and falling rocks.
2. Why is driving on Karnali Highway only allowed during the day?
A. The road is too narrow for night driving.
B. The police banned night driving because of frequent fatal accidents.
C. The weather is too bad at night.
D. There is no lighting on the road.
3. Which of the following is a special feature of Commonwealth Avenue compared with the other three roads?
A. It is a narrow mountain road.
B. It is a wide urban highway instead of a mountain road.
C. It has a lot of hairpin turns.
D. It is often hit by monsoons.

Retirement is more than just an event—it is a transition that affects people’s mental health as much as their work lives. Susan Moore from Swinburne University of Technology writes about the challenges of this phase.
Australians now need to be 67 years old to get the pension, so many people work longer. But because people are living longer (higher life expectancy), retirement may last 20 years or even more. How can people deal with this period of life?
In 2018, Moore and a colleague did a survey. They asked nearly 1,000 Australians aged 55 and over—who said they were fully or mostly retired. The results showed most were satisfied with their retirement: 51% were very satisfied, and 35% were satisfied. Over 80% thought their life after retirement was better (47%) or the same (39%) as when they were working.
Retirees liked the freedom most. They could sleep in, travel, meet family and friends, do gardening, learn new things, or spend more on nice things if they had enough money. But freedom also had problems. One woman in the survey said she got tired of this kind of life after four months and asked, “Is this all there is?”
What did retirees miss the most? Nearly 20% worried about money, and one-third felt worse off financially—even though most of them had worked as professionals or in white-collar jobs. More importantly, they missed social connections: making new friends, joining activities, and feeling useful. Many said they missed working in a team and the purpose that work gave. One retiree said, “I miss the sense of purpose. I felt useful when I worked, but now I often feel lost, like I should be doing something.”
Work also shapes who we are. It gives us status and helps build confidence. When we meet someone new, they often ask, “What do you do?” It seems like our job defines us, not the many other parts of our lives. So it’s not surprising that many retirees said retirement made them question their identity.
8. What age do Australians need to be to get the pension now?
A. 55 B. 60 C. 67 D. 70
9. According to the 2018 survey, what percentage of retirees were very satisfied with their retirement?
A. 35% B. 47% C. 51% D. 80%
10. What can we infer from the woman’s question “Is this all there is?”?
A. She wanted to travel to more places.
B. She felt bored with the freedom of retirement.
C. She needed more money to enjoy retirement.
D. She missed her old friends from work.
11. Why do retirees often face identity challenges?
A. They have no chance to learn new skills.
B. Their families don’t support their retirement life.
C. Work used to define them, but now that part is gone.
D They can’t stay in touch with their former colleagues.
D
China is accelerating the construction of an integrated national computing power platform, aiming to enhance the quality and efficiency of computational resources and strengthen the country’s capabilities in core technologies such as AI chips, said officials and experts.
As the backbone of AI development, computing power has become the battleground for global technological supremacy, and China is charging ahead with unprecedented momentum despite challenges, they said.
The move is China’s latest plan to scale up the digital infrastructure that is key to buoying its AI economy and to hone its technological prowess in strategic industries.
Vice-Minister of Industry and Information Technology Xiong Jijun emphasized the government’s commitment to “guiding the orderly development of computing infrastructure and improving the supply quality of computing resources” at the 2025 China Computational Power Conference, which concluded on Sunday in Datong, Shanxi province.
He emphasized the need to accelerate breakthroughs in key technologies such as graphic processing units and algorithms for large language models which are crucial for sharpening China’s competitive edge in AI.
Roughly defined as the ability to process data, computing power includes technologies such as chips and data centers to support information processing, data storage and network capacity in the digital economy era.
Wu Hequan, an academician at the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said that computing power is an invisible yet indispensable force behind any AI-driven metamorphosis, and that without enough computing power to process data, it is impossible to support large-scale AI applications.
“Every yuan ($0.14) invested in computing power drives 3 to 4 yuan in GDP growth,” Wu said. “In the global race for AI leadership, expanding computing power supply is critical.”
China’s total computing power has been growing at approximately 30 percent annually, driven largely by soaring demand for intelligent computing fueled by AI applications, data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology showed.
Rao Shaoyang, director of the strategic development research institute of the China Telecom Research Institute, said, “AI is expected to contribute over 11 trillion yuan to China’s GDP by 2035.”
“That will account for 4 to 5 percent of the total economy,” Rao said. “This growth could multiply computing power demand by 10 or even a hundred times.”
12. What does the underlined word “metamorphosis” in Paragraph 7 probably mean?
A. Change. B. Challenge. C. Resource. D. Investment.
13. What can we infer from Wu Hequan’s words in Paragraph 8?
A. China has already won the global race for AI leadership.
B. Investing in computing power can promote economic growth.
C. Computing power is less important than AI applications.
D. One yuan invested in computing power can directly bring 3 to 4 yuan in GDP.
14. According to the passage, what is the main driver of China’s annual 30% growth in total computing power?
A. The construction of more data centers.
B. The decrease in the cost of AI chips.
C. The rising demand for intelligent computing from AI applications.
D. The government’s investment in graphic processing units.
15. What is the main purpose of China accelerating the construction of the integrated national computing power platform?
A To host the 2025 China Computational Power Conference successfully.
B. To improve computational resources’ quality and efficiency and strengthen core tech capabilities.
C. To make AI contribute 11 trillion yuan to GDP by 2035.
D. To ban foreign companies from participating in China’s computing power industry.

Looking for a creative way to boost your brain? Memorising poetry has a whole host of mental health benefits…____16____ My friend Bruce is 85 years old. Despite the decades between us, we have plenty in common – predominantly, a love of poetry. In fact, it’s down to Lewis Carroll’s “Jabberwocky” – a poem we both memorised as children – that we are friends at all.
This intergenerational friendship brings all kinds of benefits – Bruce and I are less likely to suffer from depression, according to 2020 research in the American Journal of Psychiatry, and are less likely to die from a range of chronic diseases, as noted in PLOS Medicine. ____17____ But it’s not just the friendship that’s doing us good – it’s the poetry.
A poetry prescription
____18____ Believe it or not, poetry is a well-documented therapeutic tool. A 2021 study, published in the International Journal of Psychology, looked at the benefits of 10 90-minute poetry therapy sessions on women with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The participants experienced a significant increase in psychological wellbeing, and a significant decrease in PTSD symptoms. ____19____ Another research project from 2016, in the Journal of Palliative Medicine, looked at the effects of music and poetry on pain relief. Both art forms were found to bring about a reduction in pain, and also a reduction in depression, for participants. However, only poetry resulted in an increased sense of hope. And, in today’s world, who doesn’t need that?
____20____ Perhaps the magic lies in the fact that reading poetry is not a passive act. It invites you into the poet’s world, and creates “thinking space” in which we can reflect on our own lives through their words. The best poems don’t always make sense in a logical way, but they evoke an emotional reaction, and that can help us feel understood – forging a connection between poet and reader. In that way, a powerful poem can become a touchstone or friend. As poet Paul Celan wrote: “I cannot see any basic difference between a handshake and a poem.”
A. So what makes poetry have this unique power to lift hope?
B. One surprising advantage of memorising poetry is the relationships it builds.
C. Music has long been used to help people relax and ease their pain.
D. These positive effects of intergenerational friendship are truly amazing.
E. Let’s explore how poetry works as a helpful tool for our mental and physical health.
F. To get the most out of poetry, you should try writing your own sometimes.
G. This study isn’t the only one that shows poetry’s ability to help people.

Suzanne Heywood recalled her turbulent childhood “trapped” on a boat with her parents and how she escaped. At 7, her UK parents pulled her and younger brother Jonathan out of school for a promised 3-year voyage to recreate Captain Cook’s final global trip — though it lasted 10 years.
Her parents saw the journey as a “privilege” and “trip of a lifetime,” but Suzanne compared it to prison. She couldn’t attend school or have normal friendships. The voyage was dangerous: once, a huge storm hit their boat between South Africa and Australia. The 7-year-old was thrown around the cabin, fracturing her skull and breaking her nose. They later found a tiny Indian Ocean island where she had multiple head operations without anaesthetic.
Realizing her parents had no plans to return, Suzanne saw education as her only lifeline to a normal life. Remote learning wasn’t an option in 1969, so she enrolled in an Australian correspondence school at 13, studying in the small cabin despite missed education gaps. At 16, she and her 15-year-old brother were sent to a New Zealand school while their parents kept sailing.
Suzanne still got into Oxford University. After saving money from farm work, she bought a one-way plane ticket back to the UK. Inspired by her husband’s 2018 death, she shared her story publicly: her memoir Wavewalker became a bestseller, and she’s worked through her childhood trauma. Her tale touched millions — online fans praised her bravery, with some calling her book “one of the best” and saying her story inspired them to change their lives.
Stepping off the plane in London, ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Besides sharing her story through Wavewalker and social media, Suzanne decided to do more to help young people facing similar feelings of being “trapped”.

A She wanted to travel to more places.
D. They can’t stay in touch with their former colleagues.
【答案】8. C 9. C 10. B 11. C

【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段中的“Work also shapes who we are. It gives us status and helps build confidence.
He emphasized the need to accelerate breakthroughs in key technologies such as graphic processing units and algorithms for large language models, which are crucial for sharpening China’s competitive edge in AI.
C Computing power is less important than AI applications.
A. To host the 2025 China Computational Power Conference successfully.
B. To improve computational resources’ quality and efficiency and strengthen core tech capabilities.
C. To make AI contribute 11 trillion yuan to GDP by 2035.
D. To ban foreign companies from participating in China’s computing power industry.

第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
【答案】16. B 17. D 18. E 19. G 20. A

(1) 续写词数应为150个左右;

Besides sharing her story through Wavewalker and social media, Suzanne decided to do more to help young people facing similar feelings of being “trapped”.

【答案】
Stepping off the plane in London, Suzanne held her small suitcase tightly, her hands trembling a little with a mix of nervousness and excitement. She took a bus to her old neighborhood, where the red-brick houses still stood tall. An elderly woman watering flowers at a gate stared at her for a moment, then gasped: “Suzanne? Is that really you?” It was Mrs. Carter, her former neighbor. Mrs. Carter pulled her into a warm hug, tears in her eyes. That night, Suzanne stayed at a small inn. Lying on the soft bed, she listened to the quiet hum of the city instead of crashing waves. For the first time in years, she didn’t wake up fearing storms or cramped spaces — she felt at peace.
Besides sharing her story through Wavewalker and social media, Suzanne decided to do more to help young people facing similar feelings of being “trapped”. Once, a 16-year-old girl named Mia approached her after a speech, whispering that she felt stuck at home, forced to quit school to help her family. Suzanne gave Mia a copy of Wavewalker and her email address. With Suzanne’s encouragement, Mia enrolled in a part-time correspondence course. A year later, Mia sent her a photo of her first report card — all A’s. Suzanne smiled, knowing her pain had turned into a light for others. She often said, “No cage is too strong if you hold onto hope and keep learning.”
