Unit 1 Trying new things-A Be curious (Viewing and listening)
This unit, "Trying new things - A Be curious", from Shanghai Education Edition (Five-four System) (2024) for Grade 7, focuses on the theme of curiosity and trying new things. The viewing and listening materials are designed to introduce students to different situations where people show curiosity and engage in new experiences. Through vivid pictures, interesting dialogues, and short video clips, students will be exposed to relevant vocabulary, sentence patterns, and cultural backgrounds. For example, they might encounter conversations about trying new sports, exploring new hobbies, or visiting new places. This content not only enriches students' language knowledge but also encourages them to develop a positive attitude towards curiosity and new experiences in real life.

教学过程
1 Lead-in (5 minutes)
Show students some pictures of people doing various new and interesting things, such as skydiving, learning a musical instrument, or cooking a new dish.
Ask students questions like "What are these people doing?", "Do you think it's interesting?", "Have you ever done anything similar?"
Encourage students to share their initial thoughts and experiences related to the pictures, thus leading to the theme of "Trying new things - A Be curious".
2 Pre-viewing/Listening (10 minutes)
Introduce the key vocabulary related to the theme. Write the words on the blackboard or show them on PPT, and explain their meanings and pronunciations. For example, for the word "curious", explain that it means having a strong desire to know or learn something, and show how to pronounce it /ˈkjʊəriəs/.
Teach the important sentence patterns. Use examples and ask students to repeat after the teacher. Then, create some simple situations for students to practice using these sentence patterns. For instance, the teacher says "I'm curious about the new book in the library", and then asks students to make similar sentences with their own interests.
Briefly introduce the background of the viewing and listening materials. Let students know what the story or topic is about, so that they can have a general expectation when watching and listening.
3 Viewing/Listening (10 minutes)
Play the video or audio materials for the first time. Ask students to watch and listen carefully, and try to get a general understanding of the content. After that, ask some simple questions to check their overall comprehension, such as "What is the main idea of the story?", "Who are the main characters?"
Play the materials again. This time, ask students to pay attention to specific details, like what new things the characters tried, why they tried them, and how they felt. Let students take notes if necessary.
Pause the video or audio at some key points to explain difficult expressions or cultural references. For example, if there is an expression like "give it a shot" which means "try it", explain its meaning and usage.
4 Post-viewing/Listening (15 minutes)
Organize students to have group discussions. Divide them into groups of 4 - Pose some discussion questions, such as "What do you think is the most interesting new thing in the video/audio? Why?", "If you were in the same situation, what would you do?", "Have you had any similar experiences of trying new things?"
Each group selects a representative to report their discussion results to the whole class. Encourage other students to ask questions and make comments.
Conduct a language focus activity. Review the key vocabulary and sentence patterns that appeared in the viewing and listening materials. Ask students to make sentences using these words and patterns based on the content they just watched and listened to. For example, ask them to make a sentence with "be curious about" related to the story.
Assign a short writing task. Ask students to write a short paragraph about a new thing they want to try in the future. They should include reasons why they want to try it and what they expect to get from the experience. Walk around the classroom to provide guidance and help.
5 Summary and Homework (5 minutes)
Summarize the key points of this class, including the vocabulary, sentence patterns, and the main ideas about trying new things. Emphasize the importance of being curious and brave to try new things in both language learning and daily life.
Assign homework:
Ask students to make a poster about "My Curious Plan". They need to draw pictures and write some English sentences about new things they plan to try in the coming week or month.
Require students to listen to the viewing and listening materials again at home and imitate the pronunciation and intonation of the characters.
教学反思
After this class, it is necessary to reflect on the teaching process and effectiveness. Consider the following aspects:
Student Participation: Observe whether students actively participated in class discussions, group work, and other activities. If some students were less involved, think about the reasons, such as whether the tasks were too difficult or not interesting enough for them. Consider how to adjust future teaching to encourage more students to participate.
Knowledge Acquisition: Evaluate whether students have mastered the key vocabulary, sentence patterns, and understood the viewing and listening materials. This can be done through in-class questions, students' responses, and their performance in writing tasks. If students still have difficulties, plan to provide more practice and review in the next class.
Teaching Methods: Reflect on whether the teaching methods used, such as lead-in, pre-teaching, viewing/listening activities, and post-activities, were effective in achieving the teaching objectives. Consider if there are better ways to present the content, make the learning process more engaging, or help students better understand and apply the knowledge.
Time Management: Check if the time allocation for each part of the class was reasonable. If some activities took too much or too little time, adjust the time plan for future classes to ensure a more balanced and smooth teaching process.
By carefully reflecting on these aspects, continuous improvement can be made to enhance the quality of English teaching in the future.
