教学过程
1. Warming-up (5 minutes)
Greet the students and show them some beautiful stamps on the PPT. Ask them if they have ever seen stamps before and if they know what stamps are used for.
Brainstorm with the students about the things they can see on stamps, such as animals, plants, buildings, and people. Write their answers on the blackboard.
2. Lead-in (5 minutes)
Show some stamps with famous people on them, like a stamp of Albert Einstein. Ask students if they recognize the person on the stamp and what they know about him.
Then introduce the topic of this project: “Today we are going to explore stamps of famous people in history. We will learn about their lives, achievements, and why they are so important that they are featured on stamps.”
3. Pre - project (10 minutes)
Vocabulary Teaching
Present the new vocabulary related to stamps and famous people on the PPT. Teach the pronunciation, meaning, and usage of each word through pictures, examples, and short sentences. For example, show a picture of an inventor and say, “An inventor is a person who creates or designs something new. Thomas Edison is a famous inventor. He invented the light bulb.”
Let students read the words aloud several times to practice pronunciation. Then play a vocabulary game, such as “Word Relay”. One student says a word, and the next student has to say a new word starting with the last letter of the previous word.
Background Knowledge of Stamps
Briefly introduce the history of stamps. Use a short video or simple pictures to show how stamps were invented, starting from the first stamp “Penny Black” in the UK. Explain that stamps are not only used for sending letters but also carry cultural and historical information.
Talk about why famous people are chosen to be on stamps. It is a way to honor their contributions, spread their stories, and let more people know about them.
4. While - project (20 minutes)
Group Work
Divide the students into groups of 4 - 5. Each group is given a set of stamps of famous people or pictures printed from the Internet.
The task for each group is to research one of the famous people on their stamps. They can use textbooks, reference books in the classroom, or online resources (if available) to collect information about the person's life, achievements, and influence.
Provide a worksheet for each group to help them organize the information. The worksheet includes the following blanks: Name of the famous person, Profession, Birth and death years, Main achievements, Why he/she is famous, Interesting facts.
Walk around the classroom to offer guidance and support. Encourage students to communicate in English within the group, ask questions, and share their findings.
Design Your Own Stamp
After the information collection, each group needs to design their own stamp of a famous person. They can draw a simple picture of the person on a piece of paper, write the name of the person, and add some elements related to their achievements around the portrait.
Each group also has to write a short introduction about the famous person on their stamp, using the sentence patterns they have learned. For example, “This stamp shows Confucius, a great philosopher in ancient China. He is famous for his teachings on ethics and morality. His ideas have influenced Chinese culture for thousands of years.”
5. Post - project (10 minutes)
Group Presentations
Each group comes to the front of the class to present their designed stamp and the introduction of the famous person. Other students listen carefully and can ask questions after the presentation.
While listening, the rest of the students fill in a feedback form. The form includes items such as “Is the information accurate?”, “Is the presentation clear and fluent?”, “Is the design of the stamp creative?”
Summary and Evaluation
Summarize the key points of this project, including the vocabulary, sentence patterns, and the knowledge about famous people and stamps.
Evaluate the students' performance in this project. Praise their efforts, creativity, and good teamwork. Point out the areas that need improvement, such as language accuracy and organization of ideas.
Select the best - designed stamps and the most outstanding presentations, and give small prizes to the students in those groups as an encouragement.
教学反思
After this class, I found that most students were interested in the topic of stamps of famous people. The warm - up and lead - in activities successfully aroused their curiosity and engaged them in the class. Group work provided students with opportunities to communicate and cooperate in English, which improved their language skills and teamwork ability. However, there were also some problems. Some students had difficulty in finding accurate English words to express their ideas when collecting information and making presentations. In the future, more vocabulary building and oral practice should be carried out. Also, during the group work, a few students were less involved. I need to find better ways to encourage every student to participate actively. Overall, this project - based lesson has achieved certain teaching goals, but there is still room for improvement in teaching methods and student guidance.
