Sir John Gurdon is a good example of this. As a boy, he was told he was hopeless in science and finished bottom of his class. However, aged 79, the very same Gurdon shared the 2012 Nobel Prize in Medicine with Japanese stem cell (干细胞) researcher Shinya Yamanaka. Like so many scientists, Gurdon shows us where the power of curiosity and perseverance (坚持不懈) can lead. At the age of 15 in 1948, Gurdon ranked last out of the 250 boys at his high school in Biology and every other science subject. Gurdon’s high school science teacher even said that his dream of becoming a scientist was quite ridiculous. In spite of his teacher’s criticism, Gurdon followed his curiosity and kept working hard. He went to the lab earlier and left later than anyone else. He experienced thousands of failures. “My own belief is that we will, in the end, understand everything about how cells actually work,” said Gurdon. In 1962, Gurdon took a cell from an adult frog and moved its genetic (基因的) information into an egg cell. The egg cell grew into a clone (克隆) of the adult frog. This technique later helped to create the sheep Dolly in 1996, the first cloned mammal (哺乳动物) in the world. In 2006, Gurdon’s work was developed by Yamanaka to show that a sample of a person’s skin can be used to create stem cells. Using this technique, doctors can repair a patient’s heart after a heart attack. “Luck favors the prepared mind,” Gurdon told the Nobel Prize Organization. “Ninety percent of the time things don’t work, but when they do, you have to seize (抓住) the chance.” 4. Who won the 2012 Nobel Prize in Medicine? A. Sir John Gurdon B. Shinya Yamanaka C. Sir John Gurdon and Shinya Yamanaka D. Gurdon’s science teacher 5. What does the underlined word “ridiculous” mean in Chinese? 6 In what order are the following mentioned in the passage? a create the sheep Dolly b. take a cell from an adult frog c. use a person’s skin to create stem cells d. move a frog’s genetic information into an egg cell e. grow into a clone of a frog A. b-a-c-d-e B. b-d-e-a-c C. b-d-a-c-e D. b-e-d-a-c 7. The egg cell grew into a clone (克隆) of the adult frog.(1962年,格登从一只成年青蛙身上取出一个细胞,并将其基因信息移入一个卵细胞中。 以及“This technique later helped to create the sheep Dolly in 1996(这项技术后来帮助人们在1996年培育出了克隆羊多莉)”和第八段中的“In 2006, Gurdon’s work was developed by Yamanaka to show that a sample of a person’s skin can be used to create stem cells.(2006年,山中伸弥发展了格登的研究,证明人类的皮肤样本可以用来培育干细胞。)” 通读全文,尤其是最后一段中的““Luck favors the prepared mind,” Gurdon told the Nobel Prize Organization. “Ninety percent of the time things don’t work, but when they do, you have to seize (抓住) the chance.” C Kids today have a lot of worries. Twenty 43. to 44. truth 45. but 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇记叙文。 故填were standing。 故填them。 “one... the other...” 故填the。 be thankful to sb. 故填to。 “to tell the truth”是固定短语,意为“说实话”。 “not only... but also...” 而且……”,连接两个并列的成分,这里连接“enjoyed the beauty of the buildings along the street”和“felt the warmth of society”。故填but。 ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】例文 My View on Short Videos Nowadays, short videos are becoming more and more popular. They allow us to see different cultures, learn new skills, and relax. However, some people worry that watching too many short videos may waste time or even affect our studies. In my opinion, short videos are useful if we use them properly. We can watch educational videos to gain knowledge, or enjoy funny ones to reduce stress. But we should control our screen time and avoid addiction. Everything has two sides. The key is to find a balance. Let’s make good use of short videos instead of being controlled by them! In my opinion, short videos are useful if we use them properly. As far as I’m concerned, short videos can be of great use provided that we make proper use of them. 1】However, some people worry that watching too many short videos may waste time or even affect our studies.(运用了that引导的宾语从句) 【高分句型2】In my opinion, short videos are useful if we use them properly.(使用了if引导的条件状语从句) 第二节(满分25分) 47. It was the beginning of the summer term. Everything felt the same — same teachers, same classmates, same boring announcements — except for one thing. There was a new student in our class. Her name was Anna. Anna was quiet. She wore big round glasses and always kept her hair tied back in a ponytail. She didn’t talk much, and always sat in the last seat by the window. That spot had been mine for the whole last semester. I loved it because I could watch the clouds when lessons got boring, and sometimes write poems in my notebook without anyone noticing. Now, I was stuck in the middle row, between two noisy boys who argued about football and borrowed my pens without asking. I didn’t know why it bothered me so much, but it did. Maybe it was because it felt like something small, something mine, had been taken away without warning. I started to avoid looking at her. I told myself it wasn’t a big deal, but every time I saw her staring peacefully out the window, I was a little annoyed. The more she looked like she belonged there, the more I disliked her — even though she had never done anything wrong. One day, during lunch break, I walked up to her and said, “Hey, why don’t you sit somewhere else? That was my seat.” She looked up, clearly surprised, and replied softly, “I... I didn’t know. The teacher told me to sit here.” I didn’t wait for more explanation. “Just think about it, okay?” I said, and walked away. She didn’t move the next day. She kept sitting there, looking out the window like she had always belonged. I complained about her to my friends, ignored her in class, and barely spoke to her when we had to work in groups. I thought maybe if I was cold enough, she’d move. But she never did. Then came the English group project. We had to write and perform a short play. I was actually excited about it — finally, something fun and creative. But when I saw the group list, my heart sank. To my annoyance, Anna was placed in my group. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ On the day of the performance, we stepped onto the stage nervously, but the play went beautifully. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: To my annoyance, Anna was placed in my group. I sighed quietly, expecting her to stay silent or contribute nothing. But when we started brainstorming, she quietly said, “What if it’s about a girl who finds a secret garden…where time moves backward?” Her words painted pictures in my mind. The whole group fell silent, hanging onto her ideas. Anna wrote most of the script, made props out of cardboard and colored paper, and stayed late to help us rehearse. I started to see her differently. She wasn’t trying to take anything from me — she was just trying to find a place to belong. On the day of the performance, we stepped onto the stage nervously, but the play went beautifully. Everyone remembered their lines, and the audience laughed and clapped at just the right moments. Anna, quiet as ever, performed with such quiet confidence that even I was impressed. After the show, as we walked off stage, I turned to her and said, “You were really amazing.” She looked surprised, then smiled. “Thanks. You too.” It wasn’t much, but from that moment, things felt different between us. We started talking more — and slowly, we became friends. 词汇激活 行为类 ①看待:see/view ②鼓掌:clap/applaud ③开始:start/begin 情绪类 ①惊讶:surprised/astonished ②很棒的:amazing/great 【点睛】【高分句型1】I sighed quietly, expecting her to stay silent or contribute nothing.(运用了现在分词作状语) 【高分句型2】After the show, as we walked off stage, I turned to her and said, “You were really amazing.”(运用了as引导时间状语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 高一开学摸底检测 英语 分值:120 分 时间:90 分钟 考查范围:初中英语+必修一Welcome Unit、Unit 1 第一部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分50分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。 A Welcome to Blue Hotel and we will do all we can to make your stay enjoyable.
