Unit 3 Our digital lives-Section 3 Expressing and communicating ideas-Writing

 

This writing lesson is from Unit 3 “Our digital lives” in the 2024 Shanghai Education Press English textbook for Grade 8. In this unit, students have already learned about digital devices, online activities, and the influence of digital lives through reading, listening, and speaking. The writing part aims to integrate these learned language knowledge and skills. Students are required to write an article about the advantages and disadvantages of digital devices, expressing their own opinions clearly and using proper language and logical structures. This not only helps students solidify the vocabulary and sentence patterns related to digital lives but also improves their ability to organize thoughts and express views in English writing.

 

1. Key Vocabulary

Digital devices: smartphone, tablet, laptop, computer

Online activities: surf the Internet, log in/out, send/receive messages, share photos/videos, play online games

Related impacts: be addicted to, protect personal information, have a positive/negative influence on, balance online and offline life

2. Key Sentence Patterns

Expressing habits: I usually check social media before going to bed. She spends two hours a day playing video games.

Discussing advantages and disadvantages: The Internet makes our lives more convenient, but it also has some risks. One advantage of digital devices is that we can learn anytime, anywhere.

Giving suggestions: You should limit your screen time to protect your eyes. It's important not to share personal information online.

3. Writing Structures

Introduction: Lead in the topic of digital devices, for example, “In modern society, digital devices have become an important part of our daily lives.”

Body paragraphs:

Advantage part: Start with a topic sentence like “Digital devices bring us many advantages.” Then list specific advantages and explain them, such as “Firstly, they make communication much easier. We can contact our friends and family far away instantly through social media apps.”

Disadvantage part: Use a topic sentence like “However, digital devices also have some disadvantages.” Then detail the disadvantages, for example, “One of the main problems is that many people are addicted to them. They spend too much time on their smartphones, which affects their study and work.”

Conclusion: Summarize the main points and give a simple suggestion or prediction, such as “In conclusion, digital devices have both advantages and disadvantages. We should make good use of them and avoid being overly dependent.”

 

教学过程

1. Warming - up (5 minutes)

Show some pictures of different digital devices on the PPT, such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops. Ask students: “What are these? And can you briefly describe how you usually use them?” Encourage several students to answer. This activity can quickly arouse students' interest and lead them into the topic of digital devices.

2. Revision (5 minutes)

Review key vocabulary and sentence patterns learned before. Write some words on the blackboard, like “smartphone”, “be addicted to”, and ask students to make sentences with them. Then, randomly pick some students to share their sentences. After that, review sentence patterns for discussing advantages and disadvantages by giving some examples on the PPT and asking students to imitate and create their own sentences.
