Unit 3 Our digital lives-Section 3 Expressing and communicating ideas-Writing This writing lesson is from Unit 3 “Our digital lives” in the 2024 Shanghai Education Press English textbook for Grade 8. In this unit, students have already learned about digital devices, online activities, and the influence of digital lives through reading, listening, and speaking. The writing part aims to integrate these learned language knowledge and skills. Students are required to write an article about the advantages and disadvantages of digital devices, expressing their own opinions clearly and using proper language and logical structures. This not only helps students solidify the vocabulary and sentence patterns related to digital lives but also improves their ability to organize thoughts and express views in English writing. 教学目标 Students will be able to master key vocabulary and phrases related to digital devices and their impacts, such as “smartphone”, “tablet”, “be addicted to”, “have a positive/negative influence on”. Students will be able to use sentence patterns for expressing opinions, discussing advantages and disadvantages, like “The Internet makes our lives more convenient, but it also has some risks.”, “One advantage of digital devices is that...”. 教学重难点 1. Key Points Guide students to correctly use vocabulary and sentence patterns related to digital lives in writing. Teach students how to organize the structure of an article about advantages and disadvantages, usually including an introduction, body paragraphs (advantages and disadvantages respectively), and a conclusion. 2. Difficult Points Help students develop logical thinking and express their viewpoints clearly and convincingly. For example, when stating disadvantages, students need to provide specific reasons and examples. Enable students to use a variety of sentence structures and avoid simple and repetitive expressions in writing. 1. Key Vocabulary Digital devices: smartphone, tablet, laptop, computer Online activities: surf the Internet, log in/out, send/receive messages, share photos/videos, play online games Related impacts: be addicted to, protect personal information, have a positive/negative influence on, balance online and offline life 2. Key Sentence Patterns Expressing habits: I usually check social media before going to bed. She spends two hours a day playing video games. Discussing advantages and disadvantages: The Internet makes our lives more convenient, but it also has some risks. One advantage of digital devices is that we can learn anytime, anywhere. Giving suggestions: You should limit your screen time to protect your eyes. It's important not to share personal information online. 3. Writing Structures Introduction: Lead in the topic of digital devices, for example, “In modern society, digital devices have become an important part of our daily lives.” Body paragraphs: Advantage part: Start with a topic sentence like “Digital devices bring us many advantages.” Then list specific advantages and explain them, such as “Firstly, they make communication much easier. We can contact our friends and family far away instantly through social media apps.” Disadvantage part: Use a topic sentence like “However, digital devices also have some disadvantages.” Then detail the disadvantages, for example, “One of the main problems is that many people are addicted to them. They spend too much time on their smartphones, which affects their study and work.” Conclusion: Summarize the main points and give a simple suggestion or prediction, such as “In conclusion, digital devices have both advantages and disadvantages. We should make good use of them and avoid being overly dependent.” 教学过程 1. Warming - up (5 minutes) Show some pictures of different digital devices on the PPT, such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops. Ask students: “What are these? And can you briefly describe how you usually use them?” Encourage several students to answer. This activity can quickly arouse students' interest and lead them into the topic of digital devices. 2. Revision (5 minutes) Review key vocabulary and sentence patterns learned before. Write some words on the blackboard, like “smartphone”, “be addicted to”, and ask students to make sentences with them. Then, randomly pick some students to share their sentences. After that, review sentence patterns for discussing advantages and disadvantages by giving some examples on the PPT and asking students to imitate and create their own sentences. 3. Writing Guidance (15 minutes) Structure Explanation Present the general structure of an article about advantages and disadvantages on the PPT. Explain each part in detail, including the function of the introduction, how to develop body paragraphs, and what to include in the conclusion. Give some simple examples for each part. For example, for the introduction, show the sentence “Nowadays, digital devices are everywhere around us. They have greatly changed our lives, but do they bring more benefits or problems?” For body paragraphs, show how to list advantages and disadvantages one by one with reasons and examples. For the conclusion, show sentences like “To sum up, we should take advantage of digital devices while being aware of their negative impacts.” Vocabulary and Sentence Pattern Expansion Provide a word bank on the PPT, including more vocabulary related to digital devices and their impacts, such as “cyberbullying”, “virtual reality”, “improve efficiency”. Encourage students to use these words in their writing. Also, show some more complex sentence patterns for expressing opinions, like “It cannot be denied that digital devices have revolutionized our way of life, yet the potential risks they bring should not be overlooked.” Brainstorming Divide students into groups of four. Ask each group to brainstorm more advantages and disadvantages of digital devices. Give them 3 - 5 minutes to discuss and write down their ideas on a piece of paper. Then, ask each group to share some of their ideas with the whole class. Write down the useful ideas on the blackboard. 4. Writing Practice (15 minutes) Ask students to start writing their articles according to the guidance and the ideas they brainstormed. Remind them to use the correct structure, rich vocabulary, and various sentence patterns. Walk around the classroom to offer individual guidance and answer students' questions during their writing process. 5. Peer Review and Revision (5 minutes) After students finish their first drafts, ask them to exchange their writings with their partners. Provide a peer - review checklist on the PPT, which includes items like “Is the structure clear?”, “Are there any spelling or grammar mistakes?”, “Are the advantages and disadvantages clearly stated with reasons?” Students check their partners' writings according to the checklist and give some simple comments and suggestions. Then, students revise their own articles based on their partners' feedback. 教学反思 After this writing class, generally, students have a certain understanding of writing an article about the advantages and disadvantages of digital devices. They can use the learned vocabulary and sentence patterns in their writing to a certain extent, and most students can follow the basic writing structure. However, there are still some areas that need improvement. Some students still have problems with vocabulary usage. They may use words inaccurately or lack rich vocabulary to express their ideas vividly. In future teaching, more vocabulary expansion and practice activities should be carried out, such as vocabulary games and writing exercises focusing on specific vocabulary. In terms of logical thinking, some students' writing shows confusion. The connection between advantages and disadvantages and the examples they give is not very clear. In the following writing classes, more training on logical thinking should be strengthened, for example, through analyzing excellent model essays and conducting logical reasoning exercises. Although the peer - review activity can improve students' awareness of self - correction, some students may not take it seriously enough. In the future, more detailed evaluation criteria and rewards can be set to encourage students to actively participate in peer - review and improve the quality of their writing. 2 / 37 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
