I can’t forget he played with me when I was 3-4 years old. He taught me how to read when I was at the age of 5. He took care of me all night when I was sick. Whenever I felt down, he would cheer me up. He also cared about my lessons and often helped me get ready for exams. Later he sent me to New Delhi for the best education. Whenever I needed money, he never refused. He always managed (安排) money for my studies.
Two years ago, I got a job at a hospital in New Delhi. When I got my first salary which was about ten times more than my pocket money, I spent it all on myself.
When I returned home one fine morning, I heard my father talking with one neighbor. He was telling him my success. He also told him that I had a higher salary than him. A dream, his son should become better than him, came true.
I couldn’t move on my feet. Past 23 years flashed into my mind right away. I knew my father loved me very much. I could understand the things that my father did in the past. His dream was making his child more successful than himself.
If today I am successful, this is because of my father.

Can plants talk? Study has found that they do communicate with each other.
It has been known for some time that plants use chemicals (化学物质) to communicate with each other. This happens when a plant gets attacked (攻击) by insects (昆虫). The plant gives out chemicals from the leaves that are being eaten. This is like a warning (警告), or a call for help: “I’m being attacked!” When another plant gets the chemicals, it starts to give out its own, different chemicals. Some of these chemicals drive insects away and others attract (吸引) the wasps (黄蜂)! The wasps kill the insects that are eating the plants. Scientists hope to learn more about this plant warning system (系统) so that we can use it to grow more plants.
More surprisingly, plants also use sound to communicate. People can’t hear these sounds, but plants are making them. Some plants make noises with their roots (根). Corn and chili (辣椒) plants do this. Some trees make noises when there is not enough water.
Most surprisingly of all, plants have an amazing system of communication that can link nearly every plant in a forest. Scientists call this system “the wood wide web”. The wood wide web is linked underground by fungi (真菌). It links the roots of different plants to each other. It is in some ways similar to the Internet we use. Using the wood wide web, plants can share information and even food with each other. However, it may lead to bad effects. Plants may use it to steal food from each other, or give out chemicals to attack other plants. Perhaps one day scientists will learn how to create a “firewall” to help keep away from these attacks within the wood wide web.
Scientists are learning more every day about the secret ways in which plants talk to each other. Maybe one day we will know enough about plant communication to be able to “talk” with them ourselves.
8. When plants are attacked by insects what will they do?
A. They’ll kill the insects by themselves.
B. They’ll control the wasps to kill the insects.
C. They’ll give out chemicals to offer help to animals.
D. They’ll give out chemicals as a warning or a call for help.
9. How is the wood wide web linked by fungi?
A. By making noises with their roots.
B. By spreading chemicals to each other.
C. By sharing food and information with each other.
D. By linking the roots of different plants to each other.
10. What is the writer’s purpose of this passage?
A. To give people hope for further studies on plants.
B. To share a study on plant communication with us.
C. To call on people to protect the plants on the Earth.
D To encourage people to communicate with plants.
11. What is the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
【答案】8. D 9. D 10. B 11. A

A spoon of pickles (榨菜) can sometimes make a meal taste better. Recently, a new type of pickle is being discussed: “digital pickled vegetables”. It stands for the videos people watch while eating that make their food more delicious.
① The topic got more than 16 million clicks (点击) on Sina Weibo and about 100,000 people joined in the discussion. During a meal, many young people in China choose to keep their eyes on TV shows or short videos, not to have a good time with friends and family. Many believe that their food is tastier with the digital pickles.
② Can this habit make a difference to your diet? According to a study in 2019, you may eat more without noticing it. The international (国际的) team asked 62 volunteers to follow different eating habits on four different days. The habits included eating while looking at the mobile phone, reading magazines without distraction (干扰). After studying, the team found that eating with a distraction increased (增加) food intake by about 15 percent.
③ To find out the reason, the team invited two groups of people: one group ate while listening to sounds about another person eating and the other listened to sounds that helped them imagine themselves eating. The results showed that the second group ate less since they paid more attention (注意力) to their meals. When eating with the “digital pickles”, our attention can be distracted, which leads to eating more than expected.
④ A study project led by the University of Sussex, UK, pointed out that activities which need lots of attention trick many people into overeating. The team invited 120 people to do different tasks (任务) while providing them with drinks and snacks. “Our study shows that if you’re eating or drinking while your attention is distracted by a difficult task, it is less possible for you to tell how full you feel,” one of the researchers, Martin Yeomans, explained.
12. Which of the following is a kind of digital pickles?
A. Drinks. B. Snacks. C. Videos. D. Tasks.
13. What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A. Eating with digital pickles may make people get fatter.
B. Reading magazines while eating is a good eating habit.
C. Different eating habits made little difference to people’s diets.
D. Volunteers were divided into four groups by the research team.
14. Where can you put the sentence “This works not only for eating meals but also for other difficult tasks as well.”?
A. ① B. ② C. ③ D. ④
15. What is the best title for the article?
A. Finish Tasks while Eating B. Imagine Yourself Eating
C. Eat Less and Exercise More D. Enjoy Dinner with a Show
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. D 15. D

8. When plants are attacked by insects, what will they do?
D. To encourage people to communicate with plants.
11. What is the structure of the passage?

D Volunteers were divided into four groups by the research team.
