Dear Chris,
Hope this letter finds you well! Last time you said you were learning Chinese but encountered some difficulties. It's inevitable because English emphasizes the structure, while Chinese focuses on the meaning. With regard to the matter you mentioned in your letter, my suggestions are as follows.
First, I would recommend you to find a native speaker as a language partner, and meet with him on a regular basis. Besides, watching Chinese movies and listening to Chinese songs can make the learning process much more interesting. Last but not least, as an old saying goes, the meaning of one book will appear after you have read it many times. So read as many Chinese books, magazines and newspapers as possible, which will help you to expand your vocabulary.
Those are the tips on my mind now. I would always be pleased to offer you help. I do hope you will find these proposals practical.
Yours,
Li Hua
读后续写答案:本文讲的是我和好朋友宣杰半夜去看日出,当我们看完日出回来的时候,因为太激动,没有看到小河边的警告:早晨6点到10点之间放水,所以我们的车被困在水中。
Xuan Jie attempted to back the car but it didn't work. The water level was rising grfadually, and panic welled up in our hearts. We shouted for help, yet the desolate surroundings seemed to swallow our voices. I fumbled for my phone, only to find there was no signal. Xuan Jie tried to keep calm, looking for any possible way out. We grabbed the emergency hammer, ready to break the window if the situation worsened.
Finally, the rescue team arrived. Seeing the rescuers, hope surged within us. They swiftly assessed the situation and used ropes and a winch to pull the car out. With their professional efforts, we were safely rescued. Sitting on the bank, we were drenched but relieved. This experience made us realize the importance of heeding warnings and the value of teamwork in times of crisis.

20.D 此空处位于文章最后,应是对本文的概括总结,根据空前的“Anyway, the very key is to get yourself dive into cheerful thoughts and ideas and then maintain them for long enough so as to attain the power of appreciation.(无论如何,关键是让自己沉浸在快乐的思想和想法中,然后保持它们足够长的时间,以获得感激的力量。)”可知,无论如何,要让自己沉浸在快乐中,让其保持足够长的时间,以获取欣赏带来的力量,D选项“The more you appreciate, the more delighted you'll feel.(你越感激,你就会感到越快乐。)”中的appreciate对应空前的appreciation,且讲述的内容承接了空前的内容,并总结概括了全文。故选D项。

Sargassum, the invasive, sewage-scented seaweed piling up on beaches across the Caribbean, isn’t
something most people look upon kindly. But for Omar Vazquez, his first meeting was “love at first sight”.
“Everyone said, ‘It smells horrible!’ and I remember thinking, ‘There’s something more here,’” says Mr
Vazquez, the founder of Sargablock, a small company that transforms the algae (海藻 ) into construction
blocks.
A record amount of sargassum is turning crystal blue Caribbean coast waters brown and smelling of
rotten eggs as it rots in tourist spots from Mexico to Caribbean islands and now along the beaches of
Florida’s east coast.
In 2015, as part of his gardening business, Mr Vazquez launched a beach clean-up service to remove the
leafy seaweed. But, as its arrival intensified, he started considering how to turn it into something useful. In
2018, he conceived a way to use sargassum in building blocks. Today he not only sells those blocks for use in
construction projects, but also builds affordable housing in his community.
Mr Vazquez grew up surrounded by nature—and the hardships of poverty. It shaped him into someone
who takes action. “We never had a house of our own, and we didn’t have much food or clothes. I didn’t have
a father,” he says. When he built what he expected to be his nursery’s new office with Sargablock, he
designed it as a replica (复制品) of his grandparents’ home and named it after his mother, Angelita.
On a recent afternoon Elizabeth Carmen sat on the front porch of her home. Two years ago, she was hit
by a car. Mr Vazquez offered to build her a new home. By December 2021 she’d moved out of
the shelter into the two-bedroom Sargablock home. She admits feeling hesitant at first about his offer: Was it
going to have a strange smell, like decomposing sargassum on the beach? It doesn’t. “Now when I see
sargassum piling up,” Ms Carmen says, “I think, ‘That’s no pest. It’s my roof.’”
4. What can we infer about Mr Vazquez from the first paragraph?
A. He complained about the bad smell of the seaweed.
B. He found the value of the seaweed.
C. He thought sargassum to be invasive.
D. He found his first love on a beach.
5. What does the underlined word “conceived” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Led to. B. Jumped at. C. Looked for. D. Came up with.
6. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?
A. Mr Vazquez’s nature to take action.
B. MrVazque’s struggle for learning.
C. Mr Vazquez’s passion for gardening.
D. Mr Vazquez’s miserable childhood.
7. What does the example of Elizabeth reflect?
A. Mr Vazquez’s kindness. B. Mr Vazquez’s poverty.
C. Elizabeth’s doubt. D. Elizabeth’s pity.
C
After waking up, you may feel frustrated that you cannot recall the dreams you had last night. Artificial
intelligence(AI) may be able to help.
Previously, there have been AI models that can turn text into images. They can do this by learning from
a large amount of data from both text and images. This time, researchers have trained an AI system called
Stable Diffusion to recreate images based on people’s brain scans.
The researchers used an online data set provided by the University of Minnesota, the US, which
consisted of brain scans from four participants as they each viewed a set of 10,000 photos. The scans were
recorded by functional magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI).
高三英语 8月月考试卷 第 2 页 共 4 页
The AI system then learned about the brain activities by analyzing changes in blood flow shown by the
FMRI data—when a part of the brain is activated, more blood will flow to it. It then matched the brain
activities with the photos. Through this method, the AI system learned how human brains would react to
different photos.
Finally, the researchers tested the AI system on additional brain scans from the same participants when
they viewed photos of a toy bear, an airplane, a clock and a train. If the person looked at an airplane, the AI
system would use the brain scan data to create an image of a very blurry airplane. Then, it would turn on the
previous “text-to-image” model and improve the quality of the image by feeding itself the keyword
“airplane”. The final images were with about 80 percent of accuracy.
The new study created a novel approach that incorporates text and images to “decipher (破译) the brain”,
Ariel Goldstein said. In the future, scientists hope that the technology can be used to record imagined
thoughts and dreams or allow people to understand how differently other animals perceive reality.

Did you know that Americans have two new national monuments in the Southwest? They are located in
Nevada, which has more mountain ranges than any other state, and Texas, which is the second largest state.
Historically, many native American tribes have fought to keep their lands sacred, and some tribes
recently scored a victory. After over 62 years, the Yuman language-speaking peoples finally have some relief.
Roughly 33,000 acres of Avi Kwa Ame have been safeguarded under the 1964 Wilderness Act. By making all
of Avi Kwa Ame a national monument, it links monuments in California to monuments in Nevada and
Arizona.
In 1926, 3,500 acres of what is now called Castner Range were acquired by the US Government. It is
home to part of the Franklin Mountains Range, with a majority of its mountains conserved inside the Franklin
Mountains State Park, which was established in 1979. An initiative to obtain status as a National Monument
began in 2015.
The Avi Kwa Ame is considered the birthplace of the Yuman-speaking tribes, with the Mojave being the
most widely known of the tribes. It is located on the eastern side of the largest Joshua tree forest in the world!
In fact, the oldest Joshua tree there is over 900 years old.
There are also several species that live there, like the bighorn sheep, the golden eagle, and the desert
tortoise just to name a few. The newly established national monument creates a pathway for migrating
bighorn sheep and preserves territory for endangered species like Gila monsters, screech owls, peregrine
falcons, and more.
Castner Range was once home to the Comanche and Apache peoples. The Castner Range site includes
native American cave etchings, and many distinctive wild species inhabit the environment. The designation
for Castner Range will create a path for migrating animals such as mountain lions, mule deer, and other
desert wildlife.
In fact, the Chihuahuan Desert, where Castner Range is located, is the dwelling place of the biggest
remaining colony of black-tailed prairie dogs. Hueco-Mesilla Bolsons Aquifer (含水层)—a major source of
drinking water for El Paso and the surrounding towns—is located close to the range. Protecting Castner will
help keep the aquifer safe.
12. What do we know about Avi Kna Ame?
A. It is a good place for wind and solar energy.
B. It became a national monument in 1964.
C. It is connected to Castner Range.
D. It is home to the Yuman-speaking tribes.
13. What can you find in Castner Range?
A. The black-tailed prairie dog. B. The bighorn sheep.
C. The golden eagle. D. The desert tortoise.
14. What do Avi Kwa Ame and Castner Ranger have in common?
A. They both protect the largest forest.
B. They both have safe routes for animal migration.
C. They both belong to the same tribe.
D. They both provide a safe source of drinking water.
15. What is the author’s purpose of writing the text?
A. To encourage people to preserve wild species.
B. To describe the history of some native Americans.
C. To introduce two new national monuments.
D. To explain the background for development projects.

One summer vacation, I received a call from my best friend Xuan Jie, saying that she wanted to watch
the sunrise on the mountain. I responded without hesitation and set out to make a preparation for it.
We began the journey at the mid-night. Xuan Jie drove the car and I sat at the back. Snice it was so early,
we were still a little bit sleepy. In order to prevent us from falling into sleep, Xuan Jie turned on the car player
while chatting with me about our summer holiday. “Look! There is a river. Can we cross it?” I questioned.
“No problem!” Xuan Jie replied immediately. “The car has a superior ability to manage it. Wait and see!”.
On arriving at the peak of the mountain, we were excited to see a large number of people like us waiting
for the sun rising up as well. Shortly the first sunlight came into our view. We were astonished at the fantastic
sunrise and felt content with it.
On our way back home at 8 a.m., we caught sight of the same river again. However, we were so
immersed in the amazing sunrise that we missed a warning “No crossing 6-10 A.M! Water Released!”.
Xuan Jie tried her best to drive across the river. This time, unfortunately, it failed! The car got stuck in
the middle of the river.
