China is not only famous for its cute pandas, but also for the animals' favourite food — bamboo.   1   That's why it got the name “Kingdom (王国) of Bamboo”. The history of Chinese people planting and using bamboo goes back about 7,000 years.

2    For example, the plant was once an important building material (材料) in China. People used it to build houses, bridges, and so on. Even today, we can find some of such buildings around us. In the past, people also made bamboo into rafts (竹筏) to get across rivers and lakes or go fishing.   3    In the past before Chinese people had paper to write on, they used bamboo as “paper”. What's more, Chinese people have used this plant to make food, play music, and so on.

4    Chinese people believe that bamboo is a symbol of good characters. It grows straight and tall. It can stand bad weather. And its green colour is a good example of elegance (高雅).   5    Su Shi, a famous writer of the Song Dynasty, wrote in his poem, “I would rather (宁愿) eat no meat than live without bamboo.” Do you love bamboo?

A. China grows the most bamboo in the world. B. So, Chinese people love bamboo very much. C. Chinese people have used bamboo in many ways. D. Bamboo also has a special place in Chinese culture. E. When you hear the word “shape shifting (变形)”, you may think of science - fiction (科幻) movies instead of the climate.   1

A new study shows that some animals are growing larger beaks (喙), legs, and ears.   2   When we talk about climate change, we often ask, “Can humans get over it?” or “What technology can solve this?”   3   If animals can’t cool themselves down in time, they can die.

In one example, the beaks of some Australian parrot species (物种) have grown 4 to 10 per cent larger since 1871.   4   Wood mice have longer tails. Masked shrews are getting longer tails and legs too, and bats in warm climates have bigger wings.

The changes are still small now, but the study’s starter, Sara Ryding, said they could be bigger as the days become hotter. “Body parts like ears will become bigger, so we might see Dumbo, a big - eared elephant from a Disney cartoon, someday,” Ryding told BBC.

5    It just means they are trying hard to live. Not all animals will succeed. “Climate change makes the life of animals more difficult than ever before, and while some animals will adapt (适应), others will not,” said Ryding.

A. We can find many more similar examples. B. But animals also have to get used to these changes. C. Movies about animals are always popular among kids. D. But that’s what animals are doing to face climate change. E. In this way, they can easily cool themselves down as the earth gets warmer. F. Although animals are changing their looks, it doesn’t mean everything is fine.
