Unit 2 School life-Assessment
This unit in Yilin English textbook for Grade 8 focuses on "School life". The Assessment part serves as a comprehensive review and evaluation of the entire unit. It includes various aspects such as vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension, and writing related to school life. Through this assessment, students can review and summarize what they have learned in this unit, and teachers can also understand students' learning status and teaching effectiveness, so as to adjust teaching strategies in a timely manner.
The unit has covered different school - related topics, like comparing school lives in different countries, talking about school activities, and expressing preferences for different subjects. The assessment will test students' understanding and application of these aspects in different question - types, such as multiple - choice questions, fill - in - the - blanks, reading passages, and writing tasks.

教学重难点
A. Key Points
Key vocabulary and sentence patterns related to school life. Make sure students can remember and use these words and patterns correctly.
The correct use of comparative and superlative forms of adjectives in the context of school life description, such as comparing the number of subjects, the length of school days, etc.
Reading comprehension skills training. Guide students to master different reading strategies and improve their reading speed and accuracy.
B. Difficult Points
How to help students use the learned vocabulary, grammar, and sentence patterns flexibly and comprehensively in writing tasks, so as to make their writing content rich and logical.
How to improve students' ability to infer the meaning of new words and understand implicit information in reading passages, which requires students to have a certain amount of language accumulation and logical thinking ability.
A. Vocabulary
School activities: go on a school trip, have a sports meeting, join a club, take part in a competition
Subjects: Maths, Science, History, Geography, English, Chinese
Describing school life: interesting, boring, exciting, tiring, colorful
Others: discuss, keep fit, make a plan for a day trip, places of interest
B. Grammar
Comparative and superlative forms of adjectives:
For one - syllable adjectives, add - er for the comparative form and - est for the superlative form. e.g. short - shorter - shortest, tall - taller - tallest.
For adjectives with two syllables ending in - y, change - y to - i and add - er for the comparative form and - est for the superlative form. e.g. easy - easier - easiest, happy - happier - happiest.
For most two - syllable adjectives and all adjectives with three or more syllables, use more for the comparative form and most for the superlative form. e.g. beautiful - more beautiful - most beautiful, interesting - more interesting - most interesting.
Use "fewer + countable nouns" to mean a smaller number of things, and "less + uncountable nouns" to mean a smaller amount of things. e.g. fewer students, less homework.
C. Sentence Patterns
It is + adj. + to do sth. e.g. It is interesting to go on a school trip.
seem to do sth. e.g. Times seems to go faster when we are having fun.
like doing sth. / like to do sth. e.g. I like reading books in my free time. / I like to play basketball after school.
教学过程
A. Warming - up (5 minutes)
Greet the students as usual.
Show some pictures of school life on the PPT, such as students having classes, playing on the playground, and participating in club activities. Ask students to describe what they see in the pictures briefly in English. This can quickly arouse students' interest and lead them into the topic of school life.
B. Knowledge Review (10 minutes)
Vocabulary Review
Write some key words on the blackboard, such as "school trip", "discuss", "keep fit", etc. Ask students to come to the blackboard and write down their Chinese meanings. Then, randomly choose some students to make sentences with these words.
Play a vocabulary game. Show some pictures related to school life on the PPT, and ask students to quickly say out the corresponding English words. The one who says the word first gets a small point. This can make the review of vocabulary more interesting.
Grammar Review
Use some simple examples on the PPT to review the comparative and superlative forms of adjectives. For example, show two students' heights and ask students to describe them using "taller" and "the tallest". Then, let students do some oral exercises, comparing different things in the classroom, like the size of desks, the number of books, etc.
C. Assessment Practice (20 minutes)
Multiple - choice Questions
Hand out a worksheet with multiple - choice questions about vocabulary, grammar, and sentence patterns learned in this unit. For example:
"We often ______ the problems in class. Which word can be filled in the blank?" A. tell B. say C. discuss D. talk
"There are ______ students in Class A than in Class B." A. few B. fewer C. little D. less
Give students about 5 minutes to finish these questions, and then go through the answers together. Explain the reasons for each choice, especially for the wrong - chosen options, to help students understand the knowledge points better.
Reading Comprehension
Present a short passage about school life on the PPT. The passage can include information about different school activities, the number of subjects, and students' feelings about school. For example:
"Our school life is very colorful. We have many subjects, such as Maths, Science, and English. Among them, English is my favorite. We also have many school activities. Every month, we go on a school trip to different places of interest. Last month, we went to the museum. We discussed what we saw and learned a lot. The sports meeting is also an important activity in our school. I like it because I can keep fit by taking part in it."
Ask students to read the passage quickly and answer some questions:
"What is the writer's favorite subject?"
"How often do they go on a school trip?"
"Why does the writer like the sports meeting?"
Give students about 8 minutes to read and answer the questions. Then, check the answers and guide students to find the relevant information in the passage, teaching them reading skills such as skimming and scanning.
Writing
Set a writing task. Ask students to write a short passage about their own school life. They can include information about their favorite subjects, school activities they often take part in, and their feelings about school life. Remind them to use the vocabulary, grammar, and sentence patterns they have learned.
Give students about 7 minutes to write. Walk around the classroom and offer help if necessary, such as correcting spelling mistakes or giving some useful expressions.
D. Feedback and Summary (5 minutes)
Writing Feedback
Choose some students to read their writing aloud. Then, let other students give their comments, such as what they think is good in the writing and what can be improved. The teacher can also give some overall evaluations, focusing on grammar accuracy, vocabulary usage, and the logical structure of the writing.
Summary
Summarize the key points of this assessment class, including important vocabulary, grammar, and reading and writing skills. Emphasize the importance of continuous review and practice to master these knowledge points better.
E. Homework Assignment (5 minutes)
Ask students to rewrite their writing according to the feedback they got in class, and hand it in next class.
Let students make a vocabulary card for the key words in this unit, including the English words, Chinese meanings, and example sentences. This can help them review vocabulary more effectively.
教学反思
After this class, I have the following reflections:
Positive Aspects
The warming - up part was quite successful in attracting students' attention and getting them involved in the topic. The pictures of school life were vivid and familiar to students, which made them eager to express themselves in English.
The knowledge review in a game - based way increased students' enthusiasm for learning. The vocabulary game and grammar oral exercises made the review process not so boring, and most students actively participated.
The assessment practice covered different aspects of knowledge, which can comprehensively test students' learning outcomes. The reading comprehension passage was at an appropriate difficulty level, and students could master the reading skills through practice.
Areas for Improvement
In the writing feedback part, due to the limited time, not all students had the opportunity to share their writing. In the future, I can ask students to exchange their writing in groups first, and then each group selects a representative to share in class. This can ensure more students' participation.
Some students still had difficulties in using the comparative and superlative forms of adjectives correctly in the writing task. I need to design more targeted exercises in the following classes to help them strengthen this grammar point.
The time management in the multiple - choice question part could be improved. Some students needed more time to think, so in the future, I can adjust the time allocation according to the actual situation of students.
By reflecting on these aspects, I will be able to adjust my teaching strategies and methods in the next teaching process, aiming to improve teaching effectiveness and students' learning outcomes.
