Unit 5 A healthy lifestyle-Further study
This period is the further study part of Unit 5 "A healthy lifestyle" in the 7th grade English textbook of Yilin Press (2024). After learning the previous six periods, students have grasped some vocabulary related to healthy lifestyles, such as "exercise", "diet", "sleep", etc., and some sentence patterns for describing healthy and unhealthy habits, like "He/She often eats too much junk food. It’s not good for his/her health." They also have a certain understanding of the basic usage of the simple present tense and can use it to briefly describe daily behaviors and habits.
This class aims to further deepen students' understanding of healthy lifestyles and cultivate their comprehensive language application ability. The teaching materials present a reading passage about healthy lifestyles, introducing the importance of a balanced diet, regular exercise, enough sleep, etc., as well as how to develop good health habits. Additionally, there are some language practice activities, such as vocabulary filling, sentence translation, reading comprehension, etc., to help students consolidate the learned knowledge and improve their language skills.

教学过程
1. Lead - in (5 minutes)
Show some pictures of people with different lifestyles, some healthy (such as people exercising in the park, eating a plate of colorful fruits and vegetables) and some unhealthy (such as people eating a lot of junk food, staying up late playing games).
Ask students: "Look at these pictures. What can you see? Which lifestyle do you think is healthy? And why?" Let several students express their opinions. This activity aims to arouse students' interest in the topic of healthy lifestyles and review some relevant vocabulary they have learned before.
2. New Knowledge Presentation (12 minutes)
Vocabulary Teaching
Present the new vocabulary about healthy lifestyles on the PPT, such as "balanced diet", "regular exercise", "enough sleep", "junk food", "calorie", "nutrition". Explain the meaning and pronunciation of each word or phrase, and let students read after the teacher several times.
Use some simple examples to help students understand the usage of these words. For example, when teaching "balanced diet", say "A balanced diet means we should eat different kinds of food, including grains, proteins, vitamins, etc."
Sentence Pattern Teaching
Write the key sentence patterns on the blackboard: "It is important to...", "We should...", "We ought to...", "We used to...". Explain the structure and usage of each sentence pattern.
For the pattern "It is important to...", give examples like "It is important to drink enough water every day." And then let students make their own sentences using this pattern. Do the same for the other sentence patterns, and ask students to practice in pairs.
3. Reading Comprehension (10 minutes)
Give each student a handout with a short passage about healthy lifestyles. The passage can include the importance of a balanced diet, how much exercise we should do every day, and the significance of enough sleep.
Let students read the passage silently for the first time and try to get the general idea of the passage. Then, ask them some general questions, such as "What is the passage mainly about?"
For the second reading, ask students to read more carefully and answer some detailed questions on the PPT, such as "What are the components of a balanced diet mentioned in the passage?", "How often should we exercise according to the passage?"
Walk around the classroom while students are reading and answer their questions if they have any. After students finish answering the questions, check the answers together as a class.
4. Group Discussion (10 minutes)
Divide students into groups of four or five.
Pose a discussion topic: "Share your own healthy and unhealthy habits, and then discuss with your group members how to change the unhealthy habits into healthy ones."
Each group member takes turns to share their habits first. Then, they start to discuss and come up with some practical suggestions. For example, if a student says he used to eat a lot of junk food, the group can suggest that he gradually reduces the amount of junk food and replaces it with healthy snacks like nuts or fruits.
The teacher moves around the groups, listens to their discussions, and gives some guidance if necessary. After the discussion, ask each group to choose a representative to report their discussion results to the whole class.
5. Summary and Homework Assignment (8 minutes)
Summary
Summarize the key points of this class on the blackboard, including the new vocabulary, sentence patterns, and the main content of the reading passage. Emphasize the importance of a healthy lifestyle again.
Ask students if they have any questions or if there is anything they don't understand. Answer their questions.
Homework Assignment
Ask students to write a short passage about their own healthy lifestyle plans. They need to include at least three aspects, such as diet, exercise, and sleep. They should use the vocabulary and sentence patterns learned in this class.
Suggest students to share their healthy lifestyle plans with their parents at home and try to implement them.
教学反思
After this class, generally, students showed a relatively high level of enthusiasm in the group discussion part. They were actively involved in sharing their own habits and discussing how to improve them, which effectively enhanced their speaking and communication skills in English. Also, through the reading comprehension exercise, most students were able to understand the passage about healthy lifestyles and answer the related questions correctly, indicating that they had a good understanding of the new vocabulary and sentence patterns in the context.
However, there are still some areas that need improvement. In the vocabulary teaching, although using examples helped students understand the words, some students might still have problems with the spelling and usage of more complex words like "nutrition" and "calorie". Maybe more spelling games or written exercises could be added in the future to strengthen their memory.
During the group discussion, a few students were a bit shy and did not actively participate. In the future, more encouragement and specific guidance should be given to these students to make sure everyone can fully engage in the class activities. Also, when it came to the homework of writing a passage about healthy lifestyle plans, some students might find it difficult to organize their thoughts and write a well - structured passage. Thus, in the next class, it might be necessary to spend some time reviewing and giving more examples of writing structures to help students with their writing skills.
