The traveler carried only a backpack. “I also have a lot of passion with me,” she said. On August 29th, 2024, she finally set foot on Chinese soil.
Cammarota’s trip was inspired by Marco Polo, an Italian explorer who traveled to China along the ancient Silk Road more than 700 years ago. For her, the journey was

more than following in Marco Polo’s footsteps. She wanted to see the influence of China’s Belt and Road Initiative. By sharing her experiences, she now hopes her travels will help people in the West see the true beauty of China.
Cammarota’s interest in China began more than 20 years ago. A Chinese student stayed in her home and told her a lot about the country’s rich culture heritage(遗产).
Cammarota plans to spend two years in China. She will visit key stops along the ancient Silk Road, including Kashgar, Dunhuang and Xi’an. She is also looking forward to visiting Suzhou. The city was described as the “Venice of the East” by Marco Polo.
