Following a fouryear apprenticeship (学徒期) with a Lancaster candy maker, he established his first candymaking business in Philadelphia. That initial effort failed as did his next two attempts in Chicago and New York. However, he never gave up his hope to build up his own business.Returning to Lancaster in 1883, Hershey established the Lancaster Caramel Company, which quickly became an outstanding success. It was this business that established him as a candy maker and set the stage for future achievements. Hershey became fascinated with German chocolatemaking machinery exhibited at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. He bought the equipment for his Lancaster plant and soon began producing various chocolate creations. Then in 1900, he sold the Lancaster Caramel Co.in order to focus entirely on his chocolate business. Three years later, Hershey returned to Derry Church to build a new factory. There he could obtain the large supplies of fresh milk needed to perfect and produce fine milk chocolate.Through trial and error, he created his own formula for milk chocolate. In 1903 he began construction on what was to become the world's largest chocolate plant. After its completion, Hershey's milk chocolate quickly became the first nationally marketed product of its kind. With Milton Hershey's success came a great sense of social responsibility.Hershey created a completely new community around his factory. He built a model town for his employees that included comfortable homes, an inexpensive public transportation system, a quality public school system and broad cultural opportunities. The town of Hershey continues to be a special place for its residents and a popular attraction for millions of visitors each year.Indeed, Milton Hershey's achievements do speak for themselves. We know the risk of dementia (痴呆症) increases with age. But if you have memory slips, you probably needn't worry. There are pretty clear differences between signs of dementia and agerelated memory loss. After age 50, it's quite common to have trouble remembering the names of people, places and things quickly, says Dr. Kirk Daffner of Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. The brain ages just like the rest of the body. Certain parts become smaller, especially areas in the brain that are important to learning, memory and planning. Changes in brain cells can affect communication between different regions of the brain. And blood flow can be reduced as blood vessels narrow. Forgetting the name of an actor in a favorite movie, for example, is nothing to worry about. But if you forget the plot of the movie or don't remember even seeing it, that's far more concerning, Daffner says. When you forget entire experiences, he says, that's “a red flag that something more serious may be involved”. Forgetting how to operate a familiar object like a microwave oven, or forgetting how to drive to the house of a friend you've visited many times before can also be signs of something going wrong. But even then,Daffner says, people shouldn't panic. There are many things that can cause confusion and memory loss, including health problems like temporary stoppage of breathing during sleep, high blood pressure, or depression, as well as medications (药物) like antidepressants. You don't have to figure this out on your own.Daffner suggests going to your doctor to check on medications, health problems and other issues that could be affecting memory. And the best defense against memory loss is to try to prevent it by building up your brain's cognitive(认知的) reserve, Daffner says. “Read books, go to movies, take on new hobbies or activities that force one to think in novel ways,” he says. In other words, keep your brain busy and working. And also get physically active, because exercise is a known brain booster. 12.Why does the author say that one needn't be concerned about memory slips? A.Not all of them are related to one's age. B.Not all of them are symptoms of dementia. C.They occur only among certain groups of people. D.They are quite common among fiftyyearold people. 根据文章第一段“But if you have memory slips, you probably needn't worry. There are pretty clear differences between signs of dementia and agerelated memory loss.” 13.Which memoryrelated symptom should people take seriously? A.Totally forgetting how to do one's daily routines. B.Inability to recall details of one's life experiences. C.Failure to remember the names of movies or actors. D.Occasionally confusing the addresses of one's friends. 14.What should people do when signs of serious memory loss show up? A.Check the brain's cognitive reserve. B.Stop medications affecting memory. C.Turn to a professional for assistance. D.Exercise to improve their wellbeing. 根据文章倒数第二段中的“Daffner suggests going to your doctor to check on medications, health problems and other issues that could be affecting memory.” 15.What is Dr.Daffner's advice for fight against memory loss? A.Having regular physical and mental checkups. B.Taking medicine that helps boost one's brain. C.Engaging in known memory repair activities. D.Staying active both physically and mentally. 根据文章最后一段“In other words, keep your brain busy and working. And also get physically active, because exercise is a known brain booster.” (2025·吉林白城期中)Some people seem to handle life's ups and downs without needing much support, encouragement, and motivation (激励) from others. 16 Of course, we all need a little help and guidance sometimes. But these habits are what independent people do that make them so successful in life. 17 Independent people certainly don't need any help getting up in the morning! They are selfreliant and know that success means “hanging in there”.They don't need praise, encouragement, and recognition from others that they are on the right path. They know they can get the job done, and that excitement is what keeps them going. They prioritize (优先考虑) their goals and dreams. 18 Some people allow their hopes and dreams to be just that, and they pay too much attention to the naysayers (摇头族) who tell them it'll never happen.Selfsufficient people don't get distracted or discouraged by those who put a downer on their ideas. They know the path to success may not be easy, and that there may be setbacks along the way, but they believe in what they can achieve. They know themselves well.Independent people are selfassured. They are aware of their strengths and their weaknesses. 19 Of course, it's nice for people to think highly of you, but independent people don't need this approval in order to think highly of themselves. They learn from their mistakes and don't see them as failures.Just like all of us, independent people get things wrong. The only difference is that those who are selfsufficient don't need any comfort when things don't go as planned. 20 A.And they make those dreams happen. B.They just stop for a solution and try again. C.Change doesn't get in the way of their success. D.They are passionately driven and extremely selfmotivated. E.They are most successful when they are left to find things out for themselves. F.What's more, they don't need continuous advice or encouragement from others. G.Some rely on others to help them make decisions, facing even the simplest daily tasks. Who is the crowd cheering for?” The wise old man put his hands around the boy's shoulders. He answered, “Boy, you have won much more in this race than any other race you have ever run, and in this race, the crowd is not cheering for any winners but for your great teamwork.” The little boy felt proud and important.Lost in deep thought for a while, the boy thanked the wise old man for making him realize the real meaning of success. From then on, he could be regarded as a truly successful athlete.
