Louis Pasteur once said, “Chance favors the prepared mind.” That's the truth behind the following inventions—the scientists were prepared and were able to see the magic in a mistake.
Mauve
In 1856, William Perkin was trying to come up with an artificial medicine, but his experiments produced a thick mess. But the more Perkin looked at it, the more he saw a beautiful color in his mess. It turned out that he had made mauve, the first-ever synthetic dye (合成染料), which was far better than any natural dye: the color was brighter, clearer, and didn't fade or wash out.
Superglue
This super-sticky substance was discovered by accident—twice! Chemist Harry Coover had been attempting to make clear plastic gun sights, and in 1942 one method he tested produced an extremely quick bonding adhesive (黏合剂). It was useless for his gun sights, though, and he forgot about it until almost ten years later, when he came across it again while developing heat-resistant parts for airplanes. This time he recognized its potential, and the product was put on the market.
Plastic
In 1907, shellac (虫胶) was used in electronics. It was costly, so American chemist Leo Hendrik Baekeland tried to produce an alternative. Instead, his experiments produced a material that could take high temperatures. He later developed it into plastic, and it was soon used in the production of almost everything.
Teflon
Back in the 1930s, young DuPont chemist Roy Plunkett was working to make a new kind of CFC for refrigeration. After storing the gas in certain containers, he opened one to discover that it had changed into a white powder that was extremely sticky and had a very high melting point. Three years later, the substance, which was named Teflon, was patented.
21.Which invention came out earliest?
A.Mauve. B.Superglue.
C.Plastic. D.Teflon.
22.Who recognized the value of his original invention when developing airplane parts?
A.William Perkin. B.Harry Coover.
C.Leo Hendrik Baekeland. D.Roy Plunkett.
23.What do the inventions have in common?
A.They were made by accident.
B.They could take high temperatures.
C.They received no recognition at first.
D.They could be used in medical fields.
B
A Chinese girl, Tan Fanglin, overcame a world-class mathematics problem and was invited again to attend the World Laureates Forum when she was 15. Communicating with many top scientists in the world, she became a rising star in this meeting of the world's sharpest minds.
Her discovery has won her many prizes in youth innovation competitions in China. However, Tan is not a “genius” in the traditional sense. Tan was born into a scholarly family. Her father was a professor of mathematics. Tan showed a high interest in mathematics when she was very young. She likes to find questions on her own. The more difficult the problem is, the more potential she will unlock. In this process, her father will only give proper guidance.
Tan took part in many research projects. So devoted to the projects, she once made serious mistakes during the exam at school. Instead of severely rebuking her, her parents let her find the problem by herself and achieve a better balance between textbook study and research. It was because of the respect and trust of her parents that Tan began to plan her study time scientifically and applied the learning methods summarized in the process of mathematics research to the classroom. With her hard work, she made great achievements in mathematics.
Attending this meeting enabled Tan to get more inspiration from the world's top scientists. She even got the opportunity to talk with Gero Miesenböck, who is pioneering the field of optogenetics(光遗传学). Miesenböck has encouraged her not to lose her passion and love for what she does and said accepting failure is important to researchers. He has stressed that we all know that even Thomas Edison went through hundreds of unsuccessful attempts before finally inventing the light bulb. Tan has met many difficulties in her research and often feels upset. The words have made her feel inspired.
24.What can we learn about Tan Fanglin from the article?
A.She went to the meeting with her father.
B.She has a strong love for mathematics.
C.She never made mistakes in her school exams.
D.She was invited to attend the forum for the first time.
25.What does the underlined word “rebuking” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Helping. B.Challenging.
C.Criticizing. D.Praising.
26.How did Tan's parents help her with her research?
A.By correcting her mistakes.
B.By offering extra training for her research.
C.By stressing the importance of scientific research.
D.By respecting her and encouraging her in self-development.
27.Which statement does Gero Miesenböck probably agree with?
A.All roads lead to Rome.
B.Nothing is impossible.
C.Where there is a will, there is a way.
D.Failure is the mother of success.

Smart devices have apparently become an everyday part of our lives. A smart refrigerator can go above and beyond simply keeping our food cool.
A smart refrigerator is any refrigerator that's equipped with a Wi-Fi connection. It can share information about itself, be a real-time camera that lets users see what's inside while at the supermarket, or act as a digital command center for the home. Some other things smart fridges are able to do include raising or lowering the temperature at the sound of your voice or with your phone, or helping you monitor the contents of your fridge so you don't run into a milk shortage emergency.
Smart fridges can be particularly good at keeping food cool. It's easier to adjust the temperature if it is higher than it should be because the door is left slightly open. This can make a difference in your energy bills and the quality and lifespan(寿命) of your food.
Many of the smart fridge's features can also save you time when you're rushing to get ready in the morning. The people who will benefit most from a smart fridge are probably those who have children who might be using the fridge while parents are at work. It's another way you can keep an eye on what's going on at home when you're not there. However, prices do tend to run higher than traditional fridges.
If you already have a food organizational system that's working very well for you, and you are cool with the way your fridge is handling your food, then a smart fridge may not be worth it practically. However, if the smart fridge's features mentioned above sound like they would make your life easier, then one could be worth the extra expenses.
28.What can a smart refrigerator do?
A.Order food.
B.Record the contents inside.
C.Deal with emergency.
D.Share information with supermarkets.
29.Which of the following best describes the smart refrigerator?
A.Energy-saving but expensive.
B.Child-friendly but noisy.
C.Time-saving but unsafe.
D.Convenient but power-consuming.
30.What does the author suggest in the last paragraph?
A.Accepting a smart fridge passively.
B.Highly recommending us to own a smart fridge.
C.Thinking reasonably about having a smart fridge.
D.Firmly rejecting the idea of buying a smart fridge.
31.Where does the text most probably come from?
A.A poster. B.A magazine. C.A novel. D.A guidebook.
D
Picture this: your computer could sense your emotions as you worked—feeling your joy at completing a task, your boredom during repetitive data entry, or your frustration when an error message keeps emerging. This might sound like science fiction, but researchers are bringing this vision closer to reality by developing advanced computational models that can predict human emotions during computer interactions.
At the forefront of this effort is a team of Finnish scientists who have created a model. The model essentially puts itself in the user's shoes, simulating (模拟) the series of actions, outcomes, and cognitive appraisals (认知评估) that ultimately give rise to emotions like happiness, boredom, or frustration.
To test their model, the researchers designed a series of interactive computer tasks meant to cause specific emotions. In the “happiness” task, users answered a series of questions and received positive feedback for correct responses. The “boredom” task involved a series of repetitive questions. In the “frustration” task, the system was intentionally programmed to display error messages and ultimately fail, regardless of the user's answers.
As study participants worked through these tasks, the emotional reactions predicted by the model closely matched the emotions reported by the users themselves. The model was even able to discover small changes, such as a steady increase in frustration over the course of the error-ridden task.
The researchers believe their emotion-predicting model could pave the way for a new generation of emotionally intelligent computers that can tailor their behavior to the user's psychological state. An effective system might offer a stressed user comforting words of encouragement, liven up a boring task with humor, or provide emotional assistance when frustration mounts. “By creating interactions that are more emotionally attuned, designers could boost the user's engagement, productivity, and overall well-being,” they add.
However, the model is still in progress and needs to be extended to recognize a wider range of emotions across more complex, real-world computer interactions. The researchers also emphasize the importance of gathering more diverse training data to ensure the model can accurately predict emotions for users of all backgrounds.
32.How does the author introduce the topic of the text?
A.By making a comparison.
B.By creating an imaginary scene.
C.By telling a real-life story.
D.By sharing a popular book.
33.What were computer users asked to do in the study?
A.Comfort each other. B.Report their feelings.
C.Get rid of boredom. D.Stay disconnected online.
34.What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A.Great improvements on the model.
B.Characteristics of future computer users.
C.Researchers' expectation of their model.
D.Computer users' responses to the model.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Smart Computers May Replace Humans
B.Interactions with Computers Are Enjoyable
C.Computers Might Understand Our Emotions
D.An Emotion-Predicting Model Meets Challenges
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
What does it mean to be creative? Oftentimes, we think of creativity as making something entirely new and out of this world. This could be why so many people do not consider themselves creative. 36 We are all born creative. It is not all-or-nothing quality or skill, nor is it something that is genetic.
37 Much like a muscle in our bodies, it needs to be exercised in order to be strengthened. It is a way in which we challenge and express ourselves, giving us the ability to think out of the box. Sometimes the path to creative productivity is being willing to resist the trend and intentionally do something differently.
Creativity is rarely about the end product, nor is it about that satisfaction moment. 38 We can find inspiration in almost anything and practise creativity through ordinary chores. We can start by documenting things or experiences which we find interesting, taking photographs and collecting souvenirs to spark new ideas.
By recognizing the opportunities in our daily life to trigger our creativity, no matter how small, we may become more comfortable with taking bigger creative leaps in other aspects of our lives.
If we face a creative block (as we all do at some point), sometimes completing an ordinary task has an interesting way of leading us to that perfect idea. While we may think that completing that terrible chore or going on a casual walk may not do anything to get our creative juices flowing, the routine of completing another task can often speed up our creativity. In addition, the sense of accomplishment that we feel after completing an ordinary task can provide us with a newfound sense of energy to pursue other creative projects. 39
40 In many instances, it means allowing ourselves to think freely, embracing different perspectives and thereby unleashing the creative intelligence that already exists.
A.We should look for opportunities to trigger creativity in daily life.
B.Creation does not necessarily mean making something out of nothing.
C.Whether or not we realize it, we all have the capacity to express creativity.
D.Creativity is not only about making something new but also about expressing oneself.
E.However, creativity can simply be about expressing ourselves through everyday acts.
F.These chores just might be the needed step towards unleashing (释放) our creativity.
G.It is a process, one that sets us up for that moment and then does something about it.

阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
Cantonese Opera (粤剧), based in southern China and overseas ethnic Chinese communities, is a very formalized operatic form that emphasizes gymnastic and martial arts skills.
Originally based on the older forms of Chinese operas, Cantonese Opera began to add local folk melodies, Cantonese instrumentation, and 56 (eventual) even popular Western tunes. Basically, two different types of plays make up Cantonese Opera—Mo, meaning “martial arts” and Mun, or “intellectual”. Mo performances are fast-paced, involving stories of warfare, 57 (brave) and betrayal. Mun, on the other hand, tends to be a 58 (slow), more polite art form. Most of the Mun stories are romances, ghost stories, or famous classic Chinese 59 (tale).
One notable feature of Cantonese Opera is the makeup. It is among the most complicated makeup systems in all Chinese operas, 60 different shades of color and shapes, particularly on the forehead, indicating the mental state, trustworthiness, and physical health of the characters. For example, sickly characters have a thin red line 61 (draw) between the eyebrows, while comic or clownish characters have a large white spot on the bridge of the nose. Some Cantonese Operas also involve actors in “open face” makeup, 62 is so intricate and complicated that it resembles a painted mask more than a living face.
Today, Hong Kong is at 63 center of efforts to keep Cantonese Opera alive and booming. The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts 64 (offer) two-year degrees in Cantonese Opera Performance. Through such joint efforts, this unique and intricate form of Chinese opera may continue to find the audience for decades 65 (come).

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
As he lay awake that night, Tony could hear his parents discussing his sister Alice's birthday. It was just two days away.Birthdays were always fun, even though there was no money for store-bought gifts. Nearly all of the toys he and his sister had were homemade. There was nothing wrong with that, he knew. Like many families in this part, they were poor.
This birthday would be different, though. Alice was older now, and he'd seen how her eyes lit up when she saw the new doll at Honey House, a neighborhood store just down the road from their house.
How he longed for her to have it! An idea finally came to him just before he went to bed. After a quick breakfast the following morning, he tied a bag to the handlebar of his bike and headed toward a hill.
After a long journey, he reached his destination, the mango forest. There were already two other boys there. Tony grabbed his bag and set to work immediately.
The sun was high overhead. The weather was hot and nearly all of the taller trees held ripe mangoes but they were well beyond the reach. Tony struggled to climb the trees to pick mangoes, though he fell off many times.
His efforts were sometimes rewarded when a mango dropped into the bag. After a while his neck ached from looking upward, and his arms grew sore. He kept at it, though, and by late afternoon his bag was nearly full.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
Tony rushed back to Honey House, out of breath, only to find the owner of the store was going to close the door.
The following morning, Alice walked into the kitchen and took a seat at the breakfast table.

第四部分 写作
第一节
One possible version:
Dear fellow students,
As we prepare to debate on the topic “Better to study with a dictionary or a translation pen?”, I stand firmly on the side of electronic translation pens.
To begin with, translation pens offer unparalleled convenience. With just a scan, they provide instant translations, saving valuable time and effort. Moreover, they often come with additional features such as voice pronunciation and example sentences, which greatly aid in language learning.
In conclusion, while dictionaries are valuable resources, the efficiency and additional learning tools provided by translation pens make them the superior choice for modern students.

Tony rushed back to Honey House, out of breath, only to find the owner of the store was going to close the door. Seeing Tony, he told him to come the next day. But Tony didn't give up and explained all to the owner. Hearing Tony's explanation, the owner opened the bag to check the mangoes. To Tony's disappointment, they were not enough to exchange a lovely doll. He was walking out with tears rolling down his face when the owner stopped him and finally agreed because of his love for his sister. After giving many thanks, Tony got his sister a dream present.
The following morning, Alice walked into the kitchen and took a seat at the breakfast table. She noticed a beautiful box on the table. Curious, she opened the box carefully. To her great surprise, she found the doll she had been dreaming of for a long time. When Tony said happy birthday to her, Alice couldn't help crying and hugged him tightly.Touched by the warm atmosphere, their parents smiled with pleasure, knowing their son had grown up and was reliable enough to take care of his sister.
