Unit 3 Same or Different Lesson 3 I. Teaching Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: 1. identify and categorize the forms of comparatives in examples give; 2. apply comparative structures accurately in practice; 4. reflect on personal growth by comparing their past and present selves, fostering self-awareness and motivation. II.Key Points & Challenges: Key Points: 1. Students will deduce the rules for forming comparatives through guided observation. 2. Students will practice using comparatives in controlled and freer contexts. 3. Students will reflect on their personal development using comparatives. Challenges: 1. Some irregular comparatives may confuse students. 2. Students might struggle with the correct use of than and as...as in sentences. III.Teaching Methods: 1.Inductive Approach. 2.Guided Discovery. 3.Task-Based Practice. 4.Communicative Activity. IV.Teaching Materials: CAI V.Teaching Procedures: 1. Warm-up (Situational Guessing Game) The teacher describes a scenario, e.g., "It’s a fruit. It’s bigger than an apple, but smaller than a watermelon. What is it?" (Answer: orange). Students raise their hands to answer. Those who answer correctly can imitate the teacher to describe a new scenario (e.g., "It’s a subject. It’s more interesting than math for me, but less difficult than English."), and other students guess the word. 3. Presentation Task 1: Observe and Analyze (3a) a.Students read the sentences with bold comparatives and answer: Guided Questions: (1)How is the comparative formed for short adjectives (e.g., tall)? (+er) (2)What about long adjectives (e.g., colourful)? (more+ adjective) (3)Are there any exceptions?(e.g., good better) b.Rule Summary on Board: 1)Short adjectives (1-2 syllables):+ er (tall taller). 2)Long adjectives (2+ syllables):more + adjective (careful more careful). 3)Irregulars:good better, bad worse, far farther/further. Task 2: Practice Forming Comparatives Students convert adjectives into comparatives. Task 3: Comparative Adjective Spinning Wheel Divide the wheel into 8 sections, with one adjective written in each section: fast, slow, beautiful, lazy, far, good, bad, small. (1) Each group takes turns sending a representative to spin the wheel. When the pointer points to an adjective, the representative must quickly say its comparative form. (2) If the answer is correct, the group scores 1 point. If the answer is incorrect, other groups can offer supplements. The group that provides the correct supplement scores 1 point. 3. Controlled Practice Task 1: Complete Questions & Answers (3b) Students write questions/answers using prompts and report answers by reading aloud. Task 2: Compare Cities (3c) Students use the chart to compare Guangzhou and Chicago: (1) The population of Chicago was smaller than that of Guangzhou. (2)Guangzhou is larger than Chicago in area. (3) If you don’t like rain, you may like Chicago’s weather more than Guangzhou’s. (4)Guangzhou is much warmer than Chicago. (5)Chicago’s weather is cooler than Guangzhou’s. 4. Freer Practice Activity: Compare Yourself My Growth Postcard One blank postcard per student (one side for drawing/sticking stickers, the other for writing sentences). (1) Students draw or stick stickers representing "their past selves" and "their present selves" on the front side of the postcard. (2)On the back side, students write 3 sentences using comparative forms. Examples: "I read more books now than last year. I was lazier before, but now I’m harder-working. My handwriting is better than it was." (3)Students pair up to exchange their postcards. They read the sentences aloud to each other and comment on whether the comparative forms are used correctly. 5. Production Role-Play: Interview About Growth In pairs, students act as interviewers asking about changes (e.g., Are you more confident than last year?). 6. Summary Think and share: Why differences matter? Sample answer: Differences show progress. Keep growing! 7.Homework 1. Write 3 sentences comparing two friends. 2. Prepare a short speech: How I Have Improved This Year. 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
