Unit 5 Our neighbourhood Lesson 2 教学设计
I. Teaching Objectives
1. Knowledge Objectives
Students will master vocabulary related to neighbourhood places and people’s jobs (e.g., tailor shop, bakery, grocery store, flower shop, bookstore, clothing shop), and understand descriptions of people’s feelings and actions in the neighbourhood.
Students will be able to understand the passage about a friendly neighbourhood, complete a mind map, match people with descriptions, answer comprehension questions, and identify actions that make a neighbourhood friendly.
2. Ability Objectives
Improve reading and writing skills: Extract information from the passage to complete a mind map, match descriptions, answer questions, and tick friendly actions.
Enhance speaking and collaborative skills: Discuss their own neighbourhood experiences, share ideas about friendly actions, and practice using target vocabulary in conversations.
3. Affective Objectives
Cultivate students’ sense of community and willingness to contribute to a friendly neighbourhood, and help them appreciate the kindness of neighbours.
II. Language Knowledge

III. Teaching Procedures (45 Minutes Total)
Step 1: Warm - up & Lead - in (5 Minutes)
Activity: Neighbourhood People & Actions Discussion
Teacher asks: “What do you know about the people in your neighbourhood? Have you done anything to help your neighbourhood? Talk with your partner.”
Students share ideas, activating vocabulary related to neighbourhood people and actions.
Step 2: Reading & Passage Understanding (10 Minutes)
Activity 1: Mind Map Completion (Exercise 2)
Students read the passage about the neighbourhood project and complete the “The places I visited” mind map, including tailor’s shop, bakery, grocery store, flower shop, bookstore, clothing shop.
Discuss the completed mind map as a class to ensure comprehension of the visited places.
Activity 2: Key Information Extraction
Teacher asks questions like “What was the topic of the project? What did the writer learn from the interviews?”
Students answer to highlight key details about the project and neighbourhood insights.
Step 3: Reading & Task Completion (10 Minutes)
Activity 1: Person - Description Matching (Exercise 3)
Students read the passage again and match Mr Wang/Ms Li with descriptions:
Mr Wang: “I like my job. I have many friends here. People help one another in this neighbourhood.” “He was busy but still answered my questions.”
Ms Li: “I get up at 5:00 a.m. every day to make bread. It’s ready by 6:30 a.m.” “I am busy but happy. The people here are kind and polite.”
Discuss answers and analyze the characteristics of Mr Wang and Ms Li.
Activity 2: Comprehension Question Answering
Students answer questions A, B, and C:
A: Yes, Mr Wang likes the neighbourhood because he has many friends and people help one another.
B: Ms Li is hard - working, busy but happy, and contributes to the neighbourhood by making bread early.
C: We can learn that people in the neighbourhood are friendly, helpful, and have positive feelings about their community.
Step 4: Speaking & Collaborative Discussion (10 Minutes)
Activity: Friendly Neighbourhood Actions (Exercise 4)
Organize students to discuss and tick actions that help make a neighbourhood friendly (e.g., say hello to neighbours, take care of plants, help neighbours in need). They can add more actions and share with peers, practicing sentences like “I think saying hello to neighbours makes the neighbourhood friendly because...”.
Step 5: Writing & Reflection (10 Minutes)
Activity: Personal Neighbourhood Contribution
Students write a short paragraph about what they can do to make their neighbourhood friendlier, using target vocabulary and actions from Exercise 4.
Example: “I can say hello to my neighbours every day. I can also help take care of the plants in the neighbourhood. These actions will make our neighbourhood a friendly place.”
Share some paragraphs as a class to encourage positive contributions.
IV. Assessment
In - class: Assess students’ performance in mind map completion, person - description matching, question answering, group discussion, and paragraph writing to check their understanding of the passage and ability to apply the language.
Homework: (Optional) Ask students to take a photo of a friendly scene in their neighbourhood and write a short description about it, using target vocabulary.
V. Design Purpose
Skill Integration: Combine reading (passage comprehension), writing (mind map, paragraph), speaking (discussion), to help students master language about describing a friendly neighbourhood and promoting positive community actions.
Real - life Application: Use the context of neighbourhood projects and friendly actions to let students apply language in reflecting on and contributing to their real - life communities.
