Unit 3 Make it happen!-Developing ideas This unit focuses on the topic of "inventions", falling within the "People and Society" theme category, specifically related to the "Science and Technology" theme group. The "Developing ideas" part consists of two main sections. The first part is mainly about listening and speaking. Students will listen to materials related to inventions, such as information about an invention exhibition and qualities of inventors. They will learn to extract key information from the listening materials, like details of the exhibition (time, place, cost) and understand important qualities for inventors like perseverance, courage, and cooperation. In the speaking section, they will describe inventors' qualities and support their views with examples. The second part is about reading and writing. The reading passage takes Franklin, Wan Hu, Zhang Heng, etc. as examples to expound on the crucial role of curiosity in invention and creation. Through reading, students will analyze the text structure, summarize the main idea, and extract key information. In the writing part, students are guided to write a discourse about the power of curiosity, applying what they have learned from the reading. 教学目标 Students will be able to master the core vocabulary and phrases related to this part, such as "curiosity", "inspire", "experiment", "by accident", "on purpose", etc. They can understand and use sentence patterns related to expressing the role of curiosity in inventions, for example, "One's curiosity about... inspired his/her...". Students will learn about the stories of famous inventors and their inventions introduced in the text. 教学重难点 The role of curiosity in invention and creation as described in the reading passage. Ask students, "What was the most interesting thing you discovered recently?" Let several students share their experiences. Show some pictures of famous inventions, such as the light bulb, the telephone, and the computer. Ask students to briefly introduce these inventions and their inventors. This can activate students' prior knowledge about inventions and arouse their interest in the topic of this class. B. Listening (10 minutes) Pre - listening Present some new words and phrases related to the listening material, such as "invention exhibition", "ticket price", "talk by an inventor", etc. Explain their meanings and let students read and remember them. Show students a picture of an invention exhibition hall and ask them to predict what information they might hear in the listening material, like the time, place, and activities of the exhibition. While - listening Play the recording of the listening material for the first time. Students listen carefully and answer a general question, such as "What is the main idea of the listening passage?" Play the recording again. This time, students listen for specific information and fill in a form about the invention exhibition, including the opening and closing dates, the location, the ticket price, and the special event (a talk by an inventor). Post - listening Check the answers with the whole class. Then, divide students into pairs and ask them to role - play a conversation about the invention exhibition. One student acts as a person who has been to the exhibition, and the other acts as someone who wants to know about it. They should use the information from the listening material in their conversation. C. Reading (15 minutes) Pre - reading Show students pictures of Franklin, Wan Hu, and Zhang Heng. Ask if they know these people and their inventions. Let students briefly share what they know. Present the title of the reading passage "The Power of Curiosity". Ask students to predict what the passage might be about based on the title. While - reading Skimming: Let students quickly read the passage to get the main idea. Then, ask them to summarize the main idea in one or two sentences. The main idea is that curiosity has played a significant role in the inventions of many famous inventors. Scanning: Ask students to read the passage again carefully and answer some detailed questions, such as "What did Franklin's curiosity about lightning lead to?", "What was Wan Hu's attempt based on his curiosity?", and "How did Zhang Heng's curiosity affect his achievements?" Text structure analysis: Guide students to analyze the text structure. The passage first states the importance of curiosity in invention, then gives examples of Franklin, Wan Hu, and Zhang Heng to illustrate this point, and finally concludes that curiosity is the driving force behind many great inventions. Post - reading Summarize the key points of the passage with the students, emphasizing the role of curiosity in invention and the examples of famous inventors. Divide students into groups of four. Each group chooses one of the inventors in the passage and makes a short presentation about the inventor's curiosity and how it led to their invention. D. Writing (10 minutes) Pre - writing Review the text structure of the reading passage with students: introduction (stating the topic - the power of curiosity), body (giving examples to support the topic), and conclusion (restating the importance of the topic). Brainstorm with students about other examples of how curiosity led to inventions. Encourage them to think of both well - known and some less - known examples. Write the examples on the blackboard. While - writing Ask students to write a short passage about the power of curiosity. They should follow the text structure and use some of the examples discussed. Remind them to use the key vocabulary and sentence patterns learned in this class. Walk around the classroom to offer help and guidance to students during their writing process. Post - writing Ask several students to read their passages aloud to the class. After each reading, let other students give some simple comments, such as what they think is good about the passage and what could be improved. Display some well - written passages on the screen (either from students in the class or prepared in advance) and analyze the strengths of these passages, such as clear logic, appropriate examples, and correct language use. E. Summary and Homework (5 minutes) Summary Summarize the key vocabulary, phrases, sentence patterns, and the main content of this class with students. Emphasize the importance of curiosity in invention and creation. Homework Ask students to rewrite their writing passages according to the comments and suggestions they received in class. Let students do some research on another inventor and write a short report about how the inventor's curiosity influenced their inventions. The report should be at least 150 words. 教学反思 In this class, through various teaching activities such as listening, reading, and writing, students have a better understanding of the role of curiosity in invention and creation. The use of pictures, group work, and role - play can effectively arouse students' interest and actively involve them in classroom learning. However, there are also some areas that need improvement. In the listening part, some students had difficulty in accurately extracting detailed information, especially when the listening material had a relatively fast speed. In the future, more listening practice with different speeds and more complex content should be provided, and some listening skills training, such as predicting, note - taking, should be strengthened. During the writing process, although students have a certain understanding of the text structure, some students still had problems in choosing appropriate examples and organizing their language. In the following classes, more writing guidance, such as providing more model essays, analyzing writing structures in more detail, and conducting targeted writing exercises, should be carried out to improve students' writing ability. In general, this class has achieved most of the teaching objectives, but continuous improvement and adjustment of teaching methods and content are needed to better meet the learning needs of students. 2 / 37 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
