The Winning Team
Peter kept his eyes on the ground. He felt like there was a heavy weight on his shoulders as he walked home alone. It was the worst day of his life. His mind would not stop thinking about what happened only just an hour ago on the school soccer field. How could he have missed scoring that goal? He had let his whole team down. His stupid mistake made him angry. His team had lost the game because of him. He was really worried that his coach might kick him off the team.
As soon as he walked through the door, his father asked, “What’s wrong, son?” Peter’s feelings were written all over his face. “I lost the game,” Peter replied. Then he went into his room without another word. Ten minutes later, Peter heard his father knocking on his bedroom door. He opened the door to let him in.
“Look, Peter. I don’t know what happened. But whatever it was, don’t be too hard on yourself.”
“I lost the game, Dad. I failed my team. They’ll probably never let me play again.”
“Soccer is about team effort. You’re not the only reason your team lost. If you have a good team, you should support each other, besides, winning or losing is only half the game. The other half is learning how to communicate with your teammates and learning from your mistakes.”
Peter didn’t say anything, but what his father said made him think carefully.
The next day, Peter went to soccer practice with courage rather than fear in his heart. “Hey, guys,” he said to his teammates. “I’m really sorry about yesterday. We were so close to winning that game. But I think if we continue to pull together, we’re going to win the next one.”
To his surprise and relief, his teammates all nodded in agreement.
“Yeah,” they said, “don’t worry about it. It’s never just one person’s fault. We should think about how we can do better next time.”
Peter smiled. It made him feel lucky to know that he was on a winning team.

What if my child doesn’t have friends? Why does my child like to stay alone? Such thoughts probably trouble most parents at some point. People seem somewhat uncomfortable with the idea of a solitary (独处的) teenager. But psychologists (心理学家) today believe solitude can help children grow, and some might not be getting enough of it.
It’s believed that some important development can happen when young people are left to themselves. From the time most children are born, they look for small moments to be alone. As they grow up, they are sensitive to social pressures (压力) and their need for quiet moments begins to increase. In fact, solitude can help them breathe and get refreshed.
Research suggests that teenagers who spend some time by themselves seem to get better grades and have less depression (情绪低落) than those who don’t. When teenagers begin to think on their own, the resulting “self-connection” can serve them for the rest of their life. Rather than being easily influenced by the people around them, they’ll be more likely to make decisions that line up with their own values.
Clearly none of this means that teenagers should always be by themselves; different children need different amounts of alone time. As long as it is reasonable, young people should be the ones deciding how much of that time is needed, not the grown-ups. Studies have shown that when young people turn to solitude themselves, they better manage “big emotions (情绪)” and learn more from their mistakes. Sometimes they want to be alone, but other times they may also just want some control (控制) over their own life.
And when young people are alone now, they’re often on their phone or computer. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. One study showed that social-media (社交媒体) use made college students feel better about solitude. But social-media use can also get in the way of the benefits of alone time. If you’re still chatting with friends—or even just thinking about your online presence—you’re not exactly in the wings.
Of course, some young people need time to get used to being alone. “Solitude skills” can be built up little by little. In the end, the hope is that young people can push through that discomfort and learn to sit with their feelings. And for those teenagers who naturally love solitude, people should know they’re not loners. They are just enjoying their alone time.
When young people look for moments to keep to themselves, we just have to accept that and stay patient. When they are ready, they’ll be back.
23. The need of solitude ________.
A. starts when a person is a child B. ends when teenagers leave school
C. changes when people hold on to their values D. increases when teenagers have less social pressure
24. The underlined words probably mean that social-media use can also ________.
A. teach young people to tell right from wrong
B. help young people improve their online presence
C. stop young people from making good use of solitary time
D. allow young people to sit with their feelings about solitude
25. When we find a teenager who enjoys solitude, we should ________.
A. relax and leave them alone B. introduce them to friendly loners
C. teach them to control their life D. invite them to join more activities
26. The purpose of the passage is to ________.
A. encourage teenagers to improve solitude skills
B. draw people’s attention to depression in young people
C. help people understand that teenagers need alone time
D. compare the advantages and disadvantages of solitude for children
How Much Can We Afford to Forget?
In 2018, Science magazine asked some young scientists what schools should teach students. Most said students should spend less time memorizing facts and have more space for creative activities. As the Internet grows more powerful, students can access (获得) knowledge easily. Why should they be required to carry so much of it around in their heads?
Civilizations(文明)develop through forgetting life skills that were once necessary. In the Agricultural(农业的)Age, a farmer could afford to forget hunting skills. When societies industrialized, the knowledge of farming could be safe to forget. Nowadays, smart machines give us access to most human knowledge. It seems that we no longer need to remember most things. Does it matter?
Researchers have recognized several problems that may happen. For one, human beings have biases(偏见),and smart machines are likely to increase our biases. Many people believe smart machines are necessarily correct and objective, but machines are trained through a repeated testing and scoring process. In the process, human beings still decide on the correct answers.
Another problem relates to the case of accessing information. When there were no computers, efforts were required to get knowledge from other people, or go to the library. We know what knowledge lies in other brains or books, and what lies in our heads. But today, the Internet gives us the information we need quickly. This can lead to the mistaken belief-the knowledge we found was part of what we knew all along.
In a new civilization rich in machine intelligence, we have easy access to smart memory networks where information is stored. But dependency on a network suggests possibilities of being harmed easily. The collapse of any of the networks of relations our well-being(健康)depends upon, such as food and energy, would produce terrible results. Without food we get hungry; without energy we feel cold. And it is through widespread loss of memory that civilizations are at risk of falling into a dark age.
We forget old ways to free up time and space for new skills. As long as the older forms of knowledge are stored somewhere in our networks, and can be found when we need them, perhaps they’re not really forgotten. Still, as time goes on, we gradually but unquestionably become strangers to future people.
27. ·Why are smart machines likely to increase our biases?
A. Because they go off course in testing and scoring.
B. Because we control the training process on them.
C. Because we offer them too much information.
D. Because they overuse the provided answers.
28 The case of accessing information from the Internet ·
A. frees us from making efforts to learn new skills
B. . prevents civilizations from being lost at a high speed
C. misleads us into thinking we already knew the knowledge
D. separates the facts we have from those in the smart machines
29. The word "collapse" in Paragraph 5 probably means‘‘—,,·
A. a sudden failure B. the basic rule
C. a disappointing start D. the gradual development
30. What is the writer's main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To question about the standards of information storage.
B. To discuss our problems of communication with machines.
C. To stress the importance of improving our memorizing ability.
D. To remind us of the risk of depending on machines to remember.

Tough Guy: A race to the limit
What is Tough Guy?
Every January, more than 3,000 people take part in one of the most difficult races on Earth: the Tough Guy competition. To finish the course, players need to run, swim and climb 15 kilometres. It is a special race because these runners have to crawl (爬) through tunnels, run across a field of nettles (荨麻) and jump over fire. What’s more, the competition takes place in January, so temperatures are freezing—sometimes as low as -6℃. But people travel from all over the world to take part in it.
Why do people take part?
The competition is very dangerous and every year there are accidents. Injuries like broken bones and cuts are common. The race is very hard: one-third of players do not finish it. Runners have to be fit and healthy. Most people train all year to prepare for the race. It is also the first race like it in the world. Many people take part in the competition because it is so famous. In order to make the competition stay exciting and challenging, the organizers make some changes to the race and add new things every year.
The course
The diagram shows an example of the Tough Guy course. First, players run for 1 kilometre along a muddy road. Next, they crawl under low net s on the ground. After the nets, the runners jump off a high platform into a lake and swim for another 1 kilometre. After swimming, they run across a field of fire and jump over small bonfires (火堆). Next, players must crawl through a long tunnel. The tunnel is partly underwater. Finally, the runners run 2 kilometres through nettles before they reach the finish line.

1. She looks ________, and I often see her sit in the classroom ________.
A. quiet; quiet B. quietly; quietly
C. quiet; quietly D. quietly; quiet
2. —Where is Mary?
—She ________ to Harbin. She won’t be back until next Monday.
A. has been B. goes C. has gone D. went
考查现在完成时及have/has been to和have/has gone to的区别。has been to+地点:去某地已回来;has gone to+地点:去某地还未回来。根据“Where is Mary?”可知Mary过去去了哈尔滨,并对现在造成影响,所以此处时态应用现在完成时,而由“She won’t be back until next Monday”可知Mary去了哈尔滨还未回来,故选C。
3. My brother ________ college for over three years.

4. — ________ you ________ your temperature yet?
—Yes, I ________ it two hours ago. There was no fever.
A. Did, take; took B. Did, take; have taken C. Have, taken; took D. Have, taken; have taken
5. —Look at my new smart phone.
—Wow, it’s so cool! When and where ________ you ________ it?

25. When we find a teenager who enjoys solitude, we should ________.

28. The case of accessing information from the Internet ·
A. frees us from making efforts to learn new skills
B. . prevents civilizations from being lost at a high speed
C. misleads us into thinking we already knew the knowledge
D. separates the facts we have from those in the smart machines
B 28. C 29. A 30. D
For one, human beings have biases(偏见),and smart machines are likely to increase our biases. Many people believe smart machines are necessarily correct and objective, but machines are trained through a repeated testing and scoring process. In the process, human beings still decide on the correct answers可知,智能机器是通过重复测试和评分过程的训练,在这个过程中,人类仍然决定着正确的答案。
But today, the Internet gives us the information we need quickly. This can lead to the mistaken belief-the knowledge we found was part of what we knew all along.
But dependency on a network suggests possibilities of being harmed easily. The collapse of any of the networks of relations our well-being(健康)depends upon, such as food and energy, would produce terrible results.
It seems that we no longer need to remember most things. Does it matter? Researchers have recognized several problems that may happen.、第四段Another problem relates to the ease of accessing information、第五段

My Hobby
My hobby is reading. It’s like a key that unlocks a world full of wonders.
I developed this hobby when I was in Grade 4. One day, my mother gave me a storybook as a birthday gift. At first, I read it just for fun. But as I delved into those pages, I was attracted by the vivid characters and amazing plots. Gradually, I started borrowing books from the school library every week and spent my weekends lost in reading.
Reading has brought me numerous benefits. It broadens my knowledge, allowing me to learn about different cultures, histories, and scientific discoveries without leaving my home. Moreover, it improves my writing skills. The beautiful words and diverse writing styles in books inspire me to express myself better. When I face difficulties in life, the wisdom from books helps me stay positive and find solutions.
In a word, reading is not just a hobby for me. It’s a lifelong companion that enriches my soul.
