Many people are embracing (拥抱) artificial intelligence (AI). Tools such as ChatGPT use AI to produce text quickly. Some people find that helpful for school or work. Other AI tools create images or chatbots. But AI isn’t always accurate or reliable. And it comes with risks, especially if used irresponsibly. We asked some students if they think AI is good for society. They made strong points on both sides of the issue. Here are three of their answers. Where do you stand?
Rime Lee, 10, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
I believe AI can help in many areas. These include healthcare, education, robotics, and more. Some people might think students could use AI to get answers without putting in any effort. But AI doesn’t just give students the answers. It can help them solve problems step by step. That’s a great way to learn.
Maren Altrup, 10, Springfield, Missouri
AI can be good for society in some ways, but it could also go wrong. With AI, it can be hard to know what is real and what is made-up. And students could cheat on their homework. This would not be good, because teachers would not know if students were struggling. Students could stop thinking for themselves and depend too much on AI.
Thomas McGibbon, 9, Pelham, New York
Artificial intelligence is good for society. Without it, some helpful websites wouldn’t exist. It’s also good because you might have a question but your parents don’t know the answer. Then you can ask AI. I know students can use artificial intelligence to cheat on tests or on their homework. But a lot of schools are able to block (屏蔽) those websites so that students can’t cheat.
1.What can people use AI tools to do?
①produce text ②create images
③kill chatbots ④help with study or work
A.①②③ B.①②④ C.①③④ D.②③④
2.What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.AI tools. B.Students. C.Answers. D.Problems.
3.What’s the best title of the passage?
A.AI can help in many areas.
B.AI can be good for society.
C.AI opens up new opportunities.
D.Is artificial intelligence good for society?
根据“Tools such as ChatGPT use AI to produce text quickly. Some people find that helpful for school or work. Other AI tools create images or chatbots.”
根据“But AI doesn’t just give students the answers.”
Have you ever got a bad grade in your biochemistry test? Does this make you think it’s impossible for you to become a great doctor in the future? Or do you want to ask your future self how you can succeed?
Now, an AI tool called Future You might help find these answers. Harvard student Peggy is part of a team that designed the AI chatting robot Future You, a tool that helps users “see” their future. “Through talking with AI, Future You allows people to explore different possibilities of their future,” Peggy explains. “It shows possible futures that feel real and encouraging.”
Peggy also worked with a psychology (心理) scientist. This scientist’s research is about the psychology behind Future You: an idea called future self-connection. It means how close you feel to your future self. When people feel strongly connected, they believe they can become the person they want to be. For example, when you feel down, you can talk with Future You. After chatting with this wiser self, you may be more willing to go after your goals and worry less about your future. You will also be more careful about your choices, as you understand that choices you make today will make a difference tomorrow.
There are three key steps to create a Future You. First, tell your story. To do this, you are going to answer questions about who you are, what your life is like now, and what you want to do in the future. This information helps Future You better understand you, so it can create a 60-year-old future self. Second, you send a picture of yourself and it can show you a picture of what you might look like at 60. Finally, you can start a conversation.
Now, are you ready to meet a Future You?
1.According to the scientist’s research, what may happen after people use Future You?
A.They won’t care about present problems.
B.They will choose to achieve higher goals.
C.They will be encouraged and become less worried.
D.They’ll depend on others for decision-making.
2.According to the passage, what does “This wiser self” refer to?
A.The research to give you psychology advice.
B.The 60-year-old self created by AI.
C.The user himself or herself.
D.The AI tool to show your real future.
3.What do you need to do when creating a Future You?
A.Draw a picture of you. B.Create stories about you.
C.Give answers to some questions. D.Talk to the designers.
4.What may be the best title for the passage?
A.Talk to Your Future Self-An AI Helper. B.Harvard Students’ Latest invention.
C.Make a Difference to Your Future. D.How to create a Future You.
【答案】1.C 2.B 3.C 4.A
根据“It shows possible futures that feel real and encouraging”以及“After chatting with this wiser self, you may be more willing to go after your goals and worry less about your future”可知,使用Future You后,人们会受到鼓励并减少担忧。故选C。
根据“It means how close you feel to your future self”“This information helps Future You better understand you, so it can create a 60-year-old future self”以及“After chatting with this wiser self...”
根据“To do this, you are going to answer questions”可知,创建Future You时需要回答一系列问题。故选C。
故选A。
In the past, connecting (与……有联系) with friends meant spending time with them in person (亲自). But now it is different.
With the development of the technology (科技), people’s life has changed greatly. Today, most young people like to connect with their friends online better. They think it is a good way to connect with their friends. However, some people think connecting with friends online may make them lose their real-world friendships (友谊). Do you agree with it? Here are some ideas.
Know MoreIn the past, people connected with friends in simple ways. They often met friends face-to-face. They would go to their friends’ homes to play or chat. Sometimes, they would meet at places like parks or small shops. They could talk and have a good time together.
AgreeTechnology hurts friendships. When we communicate with our friends in front of a screen, it’s easier to misread (误解) their tones (语调) or body language. We might think our friends are smiling while they’re upset.
A friend might send a text message as a joke that says, “You’re the worst friend!” But our feelings might be hurt because we think he’s serious.
DisagreeI’m Frank. I don’t think technology hurts friendships. In fact, it can make them stronger.
For example, my best friends live in California where I used to live. The last time I met them in person was three years ago. But I talk to them online every week. It feels like they’re right here with me. Without technology, we can’t be so close friends.
According to experts, staying connected online is not enough to build true friendships. Spending time together face-to-face is quite important, especially when people are in trouble. During the hard times, people don’t need someone who likes their pictures or posts. What they really need is someone who can offer them help.
1.What did connecting with friends mean in the past?
______________________________________________________
2.Why do some people think technology hurts friendships?
______________________________________________________
3.Where do Frank’s best friends live?
______________________________________________________
4.What do experts think is important to build true friendships?
______________________________________________________
5.What do you think people need when they’re in trouble? And how do you help your friend in trouble?
______________________________________________________
1.Spending time with friends in person. 2.Because it’s easier to misread tones or body language online. 3.In California. 4.Spending time together face-to-face and offering help. 5.People need someone to offer real help. I would listen and help solve problems.(开放题,回答合理即可)

3.根据“Disagree: For example, my best friends live in California where I used to live.” 故填In California.
4.根据“Spending time together face-to-face is quite important, especially when people are in trouble. During the hard times, people don’t need someone who likes their pictures or posts. What they really need is someone who can offer them help.” Spending time together face-to-face and offering help.
5.根据“According to experts, staying connected online is not enough to build true friendships. Spending time together face-to-face is quite important, especially when people are in trouble. What they really need is someone who can offer them help.” People need someone to offer real help.

Agree
Technology hurts friendships.
Disagree
I’m Frank.
