【参考范文】
Approaching to the veteran,I suggested walking him to the store. He looked at me,surprised,
but with a grateful smile,he accepted my offer. As we walked,he shared stories from his college
days, his voice filled with a longing for what could have been.He spoke of his dream of becoming a
history professor, now seemingly impossible.I listened intently, realizing the weight of his unspoken
sacrifices and the invisible wounds he carried. His words painted a vivid picture of a life
interrupted,a future altered by the harsh realities of war.
Alongside the food,I purchased a gift card for him.As I handed it to him,a look of surprise
washed over his face.“This is too much,”he protested,but I insisted,explaining that it was a
small token of my appreciation for his service and sacrifice.Overwhelmed with emotion,he grasped
my hand tightly, tears welling up in his eyes.“Thank you,”he whispered, his voice thick with
gratitude.Leaving the store,I felt a profound sense of fulfillment,knowing that I had made a
difference in the life of a true hero. His story and medals deeply touched my soul, making me
appreciate the sacrifices made for our freedom.

Mystery,History & Majesty
In Shanxi Province,a land rich in history and culture, lie many sites blending mystery,
history,and majesty. Ancient grottoes,preserved cities,grand temples,and sacred mountains
here stand as living testaments to Chinas profound legacy, showcasing the evolution of art,
religion, and architecture through stories of the past.
Yungang Grottoes
Vast, majestic, and around 1,500 years old,the Yungang Grottoes in Datong display
Buddhist art and are a testament to EastWest cultural exchanges in the 5th century. Carved into
mountains and stretching about 1 km,they house over 59,000 Buddhist statues in 45 major caves
and 209 connected caves, showcasing 5thcentury EastWest cultural exchanges. Compared to
many other grotto temples in China, the Yungang Grottoes exhibit the most foreign influences.
Pingyao
Shuanglin Temple and Zhenguo Temple are key components of the Ancient City of Pingyao,
a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Shuanglin Temple was built in the 6th century, and the existing
structures were rebuilt during the Yuan,Ming and Qing dynasties. Its known for housing more
than 2,000 painted sculptures, which vividly depict the fusion of Buddhist anecdotes,a foreign
cultural element, with ancient local productions and lifestyles.
Huayan Temple
Huayan Temple in Datong is one of the largest and bestpreserved temple complexes from
the Liao and Jin dynasties. The complex features characteristics of the Khitan (̀
ab
)people
and bears witness to the integration of the nomadic and Han cultures. Huayan Temple, with its
architecture, sculptures and murals, exemplifies the extensive interactions among ancient ethnic
groups and reflects the profoundness and inclusiveness of Chinese culture.
Mount Wutai
Mount Wutai, located in Wutai County,is one of Chinas four sacred Buddhist mountains.
Since the 1st century, many monasteries have been built against the setting of the grand natural
landscape, making it one of the largest ancient Buddhist architectural complexes in the world.
The architecture,along with its sculptures,stone carvings,murals and calligraphy works,bears
witness to the local adaptation of Buddhism and its spread throughout East Asia over the past
2,000 years.

lessened even after 40 years. Thats how long Cais been making art through the use of explosives.
“The anxiety is part of my motivation to create artwork,”Cai says.
And theres high demand for Cais art, famous worldwide. In China,he led visual and
special effects for the 2008 Summer and 2022 Winter Olympics ceremonies. He spent eight years
in Japan as a young artist and now lives in New York. Each time he lights a match,he briefly
returns to his childhood—when he first played with firecrackers innocently.
It helped that his hometown,Quanzhou City, was one that was known for its collection of
fireworks sellers. But that didnt mean he immediately grasped their artistic potential. First,he
tried firing them headlong into blank canvases, which “wasnt very successful because the whole
canvas would burn completely through,”says Cai.
But art was in his DNA. His father was a smalltime poet and brushandink calligrapher;
and his mother, though not an artist herself, was a templegoing and incenseburning woman
whose spiritual beliefs influenced her son.
In his youth,Cai says,he was “unconsciously exposed to the ties between fireworks and
the fates of humans, from the Chinese practice of setting off firecrackers at a birth,a death and
during a wedding.”He felt something in the mix of matter and energy—maybe a comparison
between mind and matter, humans and the universe—in the hot center of an explosion. Soon,
he found he could take gunpowder out of firecrackers and light it directly on canvas, making
mysterious, messy blackandbrown pictures of space, nature and time.
The explosive aspect of the gunpowder took on a symbolic meaning for Cai. “As a person,
its fine to be careful and cautious, but as an artist, you may need to break free and let yourself
go a little,”says the artist.
24. Whats Cais feeling after having worked as an explosives artist for decades?
A. Proud and satisfied. B. Fresh and motivated.
C. Anxious and insecure. D. Exhausted and indifferent.
25. What does the underlined word “headlong”in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Delicately. B. Slowly.
C. Carelessly. D. Skilfully.
26. Which of the following factors hasnt contributed to Cais artistic creations?
A. The upbringing of his father, who was also an artist.
B. The high demand for innovative artists around the world.
C. The influence of his templegoing and incenseburning mother.
D. The fact that he grew up in a place famous for firecrackers.
27. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. People should take their careers seriously.
B. There are lots of things worth celebrating in ones life.
C. Our time on earth is limited and we should treasure it.
D. Artists should free their mind to have innovation.

Tipping has long been a widely accepted social norm in North America. But now more and
more people are feeling tip fatigue from being “forced”to tip more frequently.
Some consumers are posting on social media complaining about tip requests at restaurants.
Others say theyre tired of being asked to leave a tip for a simple cup of coffee. Whats next,
they wonder—are we going to be tipping our doctors and dentists, too?
As more businesses start to include digital forms of payment, customers are automatically
being asked to leave a tip—many times as high as 30%—at places they normally wouldnt.
And some say it has become more frustrating as the price of items has skyrocketed due to
inflation (
efgh
).
The digital requests can produce social pressure and are more difficult to avoid. In the past,
shoppers could easily ignore tip jars if they didnt have any spare change. Nowadays, your
generosity—or lack of it—can be laid bare for anyone close enough to glance at the screen—
including the workers themselves.
Tipping was born in the Middle Ages in Europe,a custom where servants would receive an
extra tip from their masters for excellent performance. Tips were left in European pubs to ensure
quick and good service. Wealthy Americans discovered the tradition for themselves in the 1850s
and 1860s and they brought it back to the states as a way to feel noble.
Traditionally, consumers have taken pride in being good tippers at places like restaurants,
which typically pay their workers lower than the minimum wage. But many consumers are now
feeling annoyed by automatic tip requests at coffee shops and other counter service eateries where
tipping has not typically been expected.
The pandemic has also sped up the trend towards more tipping. Michael Lynn,a consumer
behavior professor, said consumers were more generous with tips during the early days of the
COVID19 pandemic. They were showing support for workers who held jobs that put them more at
risk of catching the virus.
Tips at fullservice restaurants grew by 25 3% in the third quarter of 2022,while tips at
quick or counter service restaurants went up 16 7% compared to the same time period in 2021,
according to data. This data shows that this same period has been experiencing continuous growth
since 2019.

In the presence of chubby (
ijj
)babies, furry puppies or other adorable little things,
it isnt uncommon to be driven by a desire to squeeze, pinch (
k
)or even bite them. While
you may have the desire to do one or more of these things, you certainly dont wish to hurt these
cute creatures. But why do some of us react in this strange way?Scientists have revealed what
happens in the brain to fuel this response, which they refer to as “cute aggression.”
The researchers gathered together 54 participants between the ages of 18 and 40 and fitted
them with electrode caps (
lmno
)to measure their brain activity. The participants were
asked to look at 32 photographs that were divided into four separate blocks:one consisted of
images of adult animals (which the studys authors classified as “less cute”),one of baby
animals (classified as “cuter”),and two of human babies. The first block of human baby
images had been altered to enhance those features we humans typically perceive as being cuter
while the other was altered to reduce cuteness.
After they had viewed the images, the participants were asked to fill out questionnaires that
measured their responses to the photos. Images of baby animals got the strongest response.
According to the studys authors, the participants expressed more significant feelings of cute
aggression—such as feelings of overwhelmingness,caretaking desires,and so forth—toward
the baby animals than to the adult animals. They didnt observe the same distinction between
participants reactions to cuter and lesscute images of babies. Researchers said that this may be
because both sets of babies were “objectively pretty cute.”
By using the electrode caps, researchers were also able to gain insight into the neural (
p
q;
)activity of participants who experienced cute aggression. This response was associated
with greater activity, not only in the brains emotional systems, but also in its reward systems.
The latter regulate motivation, pleasure and feelings of “wanting”.
Scientists suspect that cute aggression is the brains way of coping with the overwhelming
response that occurs when these two powerful brain systems start to work together. In other
words, the brain tosses in a dash of aggression to temper the attack of these positive feelings.
32. Which of the following statements best describes the participants reactions to the images?
A. They showed similar responses towards images of cute animals and babies.
B. They expressed the most significant reactions towards images of baby animals.
C. They exhibited stronger emotions towards images of cuter babies compared to less cute ones.
D. They displayed the same reactions to the images of baby animals and adult animals.
33. What happened when participants experienced cute aggression?
A. There was stronger activity only in the brains reward systems.
B. There was larger activity only in the brains emotional systems.
C. There was no significant neural activity related to cute aggression.
D. There was greater activity in the brains emotional and reward systems.
34. What is cute aggression according to the passage?
A. A sign of mental health issues causing aggression.
B. A result of negative feelings towards cute creatures.
C. A form of control over things perceived as less powerful.
D. A way for the brain to handle overwhelming positive feelings.
35. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To investigate why people are driven to destroy cute things.
B. To explore the standards people use to determine what is cute.
C. To introduce what happens in the brain to cause cute aggression.
D. To examine peoples emotional responses to seeing something cute.

your phone activity? If so,youre not alone. With the development of technology, phone tapping
is no longer just a movie plot. 36 . Heres how to tell if your phone is tapped and what to do
about it.
How to Know If Your Phone Is Tapped
If you suspect your phone is being monitored, there are several signs to watch out for. Lets
start by learning how to recognize the warning signs of a tapped phone.
First, your mobile data usage might rise unexpectedly. Tapping software often sends

innocentsounding names to avoid being noticed.
What to Do If Your Phone Is Tapped
If you notice any of the above signs, dont panic. 39 .
One effective step is to reset your phone to its factory settings. This will remove most
spyware installed by hackers or stalkers.
Another important move is to contact the police. If you have clear evidence of tapping, the
police can use special equipment to check your phone. 40 . They can also guide you on
further actions to protect your privacy.
A. Its important to check your data usage regularly
B. Popups and ads are the most common sign of a tapped phone
C. All unusual phone activity must be caused by tapping software
D. Knowing how to spot the signs and take action can protect your privacy
E. Furthermore, theyll need solid evidence to take your concerns seriously
F. These ads are more than just annoying—they might be a sign of trouble
G. Now that you know how to spot a tapped phone, lets look at what you can do next

I first became interested in the Rubiks Cube (
{|
)when I was 13 because I wanted to
use it in my magic trick routine. I soon 41 that if I really made an effort,I could solve the
cube. I started watching videos that explained the algorithms (
}~
). I watched them every day
and I became 42 . About a year later,I won my first UK champion title. In 2019,Rubiks
Cube hired me as a brand ambassador, and I began making video content for them. Every job
Ive ever had has been in some way 43 to the skills Ive acquired through cubing. It has
taught me hard work and problemsolving. It has also shown me that 44 is often the result of
messing up.
As well as 45 a brand ambassador,I do Guinness World Records to get recognition for
the cube. For the Guinness World Record at the London Marathon in 2024,Rubiks sent me 600
cubes,which my friends scrambled (
). The cubes were then 46 bags. During the
race,I had two bags on my front:one for the scrambled cubes and the other for the 47
cubes. I managed to solve 520 cubes while I was 48 . I had people waiting at checkpoints
every two 49 to exchange bags with me and give me 50 scrambled cubes in return for the 50
I had solved. This 50 I was carrying ten kilos of cubes with me for the entire race. I also had
a camera on my head to 51 myself solving. In this way, everything was documented and
then confirmed by Guinness World Records to make 52 official.
The thing I like most about cubing is the inclusive community. Were not 53 against
each other, but against ourselves. In 2024,I beat my 54 solving time of 3 31 seconds,
reducing it to 3 25 seconds. It was a great feeling!I believe anyone can solve the cube—its
just a 55 of hard work and putting in the time.

I was sitting at work when I noticed a very untidy man standing in the lobby. He looked lost
and possibly homeless,or maybe even drunk because he was unsteady on his feet. I asked if I
could help him. Trying to hand some old papers in my direction,he asked if I could make him a
copy of his military paperwork. I took the papers very carefully from him so as not to tear them
anymore than they already were.
As I made the copies he told me that he was a soldier and had been half blinded in a war. I
was shocked, but took a deep breath and simply replied,“Thank you for your service.”
He told me how he hated going out in public because he knew people thought he must be a
homeless or drunk man. I felt terrible because I had indeed thought the very same thing. The
veteran went on to say that he was college educated and had many hopes and dreams in the past.
Then I noticed he was holding a small brown paper bag. The bag was wrinkled and dirty so I
offered him a plastic bag for his paperwork. He thanked me and then asked me to hold out my
hand. As I held my hand open,he carefully opened up his bag as if it contained some rare
treasure and then he placed two items in my palm.
My jaw dropped and my eyes filled with tears. This wonderful man had just placed his
military medals into my hand.
I thanked him again for his service and for blessing me with the opportunity to hold history
in the palm of my hand. He gathered his items and carefully placed them back in his bag and
started to walk away. I saw him take a few dollars and some change from his pocket. He turned
back and asked if there was a grocer nearby so he could get some food.
He explained he was diabetic (

sugar was getting low. Being diabetic myself I couldnt let him leave alone.

As we approach August, i'd like to take a moment to talk about our upcoming holiday break. As you all know, the four week holiday in August is a long standing tradition here in spain, so we will be observing IT again this year. From August first, our shop will be closed, and all of you will have the opportunity to relax and recharge. I understand that this long break may cause financial concerns, so I want to assure you that you will still receive seventy five percent of your regular pay during the holiday. Additionally, there will be a winter bonus later this year to help cover any extra expenses you might have during the holiday. We were supposed to open the door on september the first, but I plan to postponed its by one day. Once we reopen. I hope each of you will focus on refreshing the shop's design. The current design is holding us back. We must act quickly to stay competitive and will introduce a few new collections and work on increasing our visibility in the community to attract more customers. Thank you all for your hard work.
